The distribution and assessment of electron-microscopic abnormalities of human cilia.

The aim of this study was to overcome difficulties of assessing the true incidence of electromicroscopic abnormalities of microtubular structure of cilia by examining large numbers of cilia from each case. The effects of different fixatives on the appearances of cilia were also studied. Bronchial biopsies were examined from 35 subjects who were being investigated for various lung diseases and nasal biopsies from 12 subjects (7 with retinitis pigmentosa (R.

Mast cells in the human alveolar wall: an electronmicroscopic study.

Mast cells were identified by electronmicroscopy in the alveolar wall of the lung in 20 subjects (10 normal, 10 abnormal). A quantitative and qualitative study was made of the mast cells. In the normal lung there was an average concentration of 350 mast cells/mm2 of alveolar wall and in the abnormal 523/mm2.

The significance of ultrastructural abnormalities of human cilia.

The electronmicroscopic structure of cilia was studied from the inferior turbinate of the nose in 22 adults, and in 84 biopsies from the bronchial tree of 40 adults. The incidence of compound cilia and abnormal microtubular structures was assessed. There were significant variations in the incidence of abnormalities in different parts of the airways and even within different areas of the same electronmicroscopic section.

Innervation of alveolar walls in the human lung: an electron microscopic study.

Unmyelinated nerve fibres, probably sensory in type, are present in the human alveolar wall. It is possible that these fibres may be associated with juxta-capillary receptors which have been identified on physiological grounds in animals.

Variations in the ultrastructure of human nasal cilia including abnormalities found in retinitis pigmentosa.

The electron microscopic structure of cilia from the inferior turbinate of the nose was studied in 12 adults, four with chronic sinusitis, one with allergic rhinitis, two with bronchiectasis, three with deviated nasal septum, and two normals. The changes are compared with those found in nasal cilia in 14 patients with retinitis pigmentosa. There were compound cilia in the seven cases with chronic sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, and bronchiectasis but, apart from this, the structure of the cilia was similar in all 12 cases.

Hyperplasia and prolapse of hepatocytes into hepatic veins during longterm methyltestosterone therapy: possible relationships of these changes to the developement of peliosis hepatis and liver tumours.

We report the pathological changes in liver biopsies from 10 patients (four female transexuals and six impotent males) after treatment with 150 mg methyltestosterone daily for periods of up to 3 years, and in a hemihepatectomy specimen from a female transexual who developed a liver adenoma after 37 months of this treatment. Hepatocyte hyperplasia and mild focal sinusoidal dilatation was found in most cases. In some cases there were microcysts and dissociation of hepatocytes.

Lateral movement of water and sugar across xylem in sugarcane stalks.

Laterally connected vascular bundles in the nodes of sugarcane (Saccharum species cv. Pindar) stalks allow a rapid redistribution of water across the stalk should the vascular continuity be partly disrupted. Tritiated water supplied to the roots exchanged rapidly between the xylem and storage tissue so that net movement up the stalk was slow.
