Objectives/hypothesis: Septorhinoplasty is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures in the world. Studies on septorhinoplasty in the literature mainly focus on the surgical procedures and their outcomes, but the general appearance of the nose and nasal skin following surgery is also very important.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the impact of septoplasty surgery on voice acoustics, both subjectively and objectively, by analyzing vocal recordings before and after the procedure.
  • Twenty patients participated, with acoustic analysis focusing on fundamental frequency, jitter, shimmer, and various formant frequencies for different vowel sounds and consonants.
  • Results showed no statistically significant changes in voice characteristics post-surgery, indicating that correcting nasal septum deviation does not result in notable voice abnormalities.

A low-intensity ultrasonic measurement system was used to monitor the products of transesterification of soybean oil in methanol to FAME (biodiesel). The byproducts of the transesterification reaction are methyl esters, glycerol and other products. During the transesterification reaction, the glycerol, having a higher density than the methyl ester, settles at the bottom of the reaction vessel.

The early response gene IEX-1 is involved in the regulation of cellular growth and survival, and its expression is related to stress-, growth- and death-inducing signals. Addressing the role of IEX-1 in the promotion of apoptosis, we investigated the effect of IEX-1 on nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) activation. Stably transfected HEK-293 cells conditionally overexpressing IEX-1 exhibit decreased levels of NF-kappaB activity, either basal or TNFalpha induced, as shown by gel-shift and luciferase reporter gene assay.
