Extreme temperature increases the risk of COPD morbimortality: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Introduction: This systematic review examines how extreme temperatures impact chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) morbidity and mortality, focusing on identifying vulnerable subpopulations.

Methods: We conducted a systematic literature search from January 1, 2000, to November 6, 2024, across databases like PubMed, MEDLINE and EMBASE, Web of Science, and Scopus, focusing on observational studies that quantitatively defined extreme temperatures and their impacts on COPD morbidity and mortality. Out of 3140 records, 25 studies met the inclusion criteria.

The Planetary Health Diet (PHD), also known as the EAT-Lancet reference diet, was developed to optimize global dietary quality while keeping the environmental impacts of food production within sustainable planetary boundaries. We calculated current national and global adherence to the PHD using the Planetary Health Dietary Index (PHDI). In addition, we used data on diet and mortality from three large US cohorts (n = 206,404 men and women, 54,536 deaths) to estimate the total and cause-specific mortality among adults 20 y of age and older that could be prevented by shifting from current diets to the reference PHD.

Introduction: In the fight against virus-caused pandemics like COVID-19, diagnostic tests based on RT-qPCR are essential, but they are sometimes limited by their dependence on expensive, specialized equipment and skilled personnel. Consequently, an alternative nucleic acid detection technique that overcomes these restrictions, called loop-mediated isothermal amplification following reverse transcription (RT-LAMP), has been broadly investigated. Nevertheless, the developed RT-LAMP assays for SARS-CoV-2 detection still require laboratory devices and electrical power, limiting their widespread use as rapid home tests.

Genotype-driven therapeutics in DEE and metabolic epilepsy: navigating treatment efficacy and drug resistance.

Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), particularly in treating developmental and epileptic encephalopathy (DEE) and metabolic epilepsy (ME), requires a deep understanding of their complex etiologies and treatment responses. After excluding treatable cases such as infectious or autoimmune encephalitis, our focus shifted to a more challenging subgroup of 59 patients for in-depth genetic analysis using exome sequencing (ES). The ES analysis identified 40 genetic abnormalities, significantly including de novo variants.

The impacts of cancer treatment on lifestyle habits and mental health in Vietnamese women: an exploratory qualitative study.

Aims: This qualitative study explores the experiences of women after cancer treatment in terms of habit changes and mental health impact.

Method: The study involved 10 women who had undergone cancer treatment, recruited from three major hospitals in Hanoi, Vietnam. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, which were transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis.

Background: In 2019, the EAT-Lancet Commission on healthy diets from sustainable food systems proposed a Planetary Health Diet that seeks to optimise both chronic disease prevention as well as global environmental health. In this study, we aimed to examine the association between a dietary index based on the Planetary Health Diet and risk of cardiovascular disease.

Methods: We included women from the Nurses' Health Study (NHS I; 1986-2016), women from the Nurses' Health Study II (NHS II; 1991-2017), and men from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (HPFS; 1986-2016) who were free of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes at baseline.

Calyceal Rupture Secondary to Nephrolithiasis: A Case Report Emphasizing Early Diagnosis and Management.

Calyceal rupture, defined as the extravasation of urine from the renal calyces into the perinephric or paranephric spaces, typically results from increased intrapelvic pressure due to urinary tract obstruction. This condition can lead to the formation of a perinephric urinoma and severe complications, such as infection, abscess formation, and impaired renal function. Timely diagnosis and management are crucial to prevent these adverse outcomes.

Severe Pneumatosis Intestinalis and Hepatic Portal Venous Gas in a Patient With Methamphetamine Use: Early Recognition and Management.

Pneumatosis intestinalis (PI) and hepatic portal venous gas (HPVG) are rare but potentially life-threatening conditions characterized by the presence of gas within the bowel wall and portal venous system, respectively. This case report presents a 45-year-old male with a history of methamphetamine use who developed severe metabolic and hemodynamic instability, marked by altered mental status, metabolic acidosis, and ST elevations. Despite aggressive resuscitation and intensive care, the patient unfortunately succumbed to his condition, highlighting the gravity of these complications.

The detection of zoonotic microorganisms in (brown dog ticks) from Vietnam and the frequency of tick infestations in owned dogs.

Dog owners are greatly concerned about tick infestations in their pets. The prevalence and dispersion of ticks and their disease-causing microorganisms have been limited from the viewpoint of dog owners in Vietnam. This study investigated the presence of tick infestation and the pathogens associated with it in canines that were brought to veterinary hospitals in Vietnam.

Dietaryindex: a user-friendly and versatile R package for standardizing dietary pattern analysis in epidemiological and clinical studies.

Background: Few standardized and open-source tools exist for calculating multiple dietary pattern indexes from dietary intake data in epidemiological and clinical studies.

Objectives: The primary aim is to develop and validate dietaryindex, a user-friendly and versatile R package that standardizes the calculation of dietary indexes.

Methods: Dietaryindex can calculate multiple dietary indexes of high interest in research, including the Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2020, the Alternative HEI 2010, the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension Index, the Alternate Mediterranean Diet Score, the Dietary Inflammatory Index, the American Cancer Society 2020 dietary index, and the Planetary Health Diet Index from the EAT-Lancet Commission.

Objective: To inform the 2023 International PCOS Guideline, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis evaluating the prevalence of disordered eating/eating disorders among women with and without PCOS.

Methods: Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycInfo, and All EMB were searched from inception through February 1, 2024, for studies that compared prevalences of eating disordered/disordered eating in adolescent or adult women.

An exome sequencing strategy employed to identify pathogenic variants in patients with pediatric-onset systemic lupus or Evans syndrome resulted in the discovery of six novel monoallelic mutations in PTPN2. PTPN2 is a phosphatase that acts as an essential negative regulator of the JAK/STAT pathways. All mutations led to a loss of PTPN2 regulatory function as evidenced by in vitro assays and by hyperproliferation of patients' T cells.
