Background And Objective: Non-motor symptoms frequently develop throughout the disease course of Parkinson's disease (PD), and pose affected individuals at risk of complications, more rapid disease progression and poorer quality of life. Addressing such symptom burden, the 2023 revised "Parkinson's disease" guideline of the German Society of Neurology aimed at providing evidence-based recommendations for managing PD non-motor symptoms, including autonomic failure, pain and sleep disturbances.
Methods: Key PICO (Patient, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome) questions were formulated by the steering committee and refined by the assigned authors.
Deep brain stimulation can influence the speech and voice quality in Parkinson´s disease (PD). This controlled, randomized, double-blind, cross-over clinical trial was conducted in 15 PD patients with bilateral subthalamic deep brain stimulation (DBS) to compare the effects of STN-DBS with combined subthalamic and nigral stimulation (STN + SNr-DBS) and DBS OFF on speech and voice parameters in PD patients. Speech and voice were analyzed subjectively using questionnaires (voice/pronunciation quality VAS, VHI, SHI) and objectively using audio analysis (maximum phonation time, AVQI, mean F0, intonation, syllable rate, reading time).

The aim of this case-series was to assess the feasibility of a Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) intervention for PTSD in people with psychosis. The study examined the possibilities and obstacles when treating this population within clinical settings.

Aim of this review is to discuss the value of current ongoing research initiatives in Parkinson's disease from the clinicians' point of view. The repeat, recent failures on progress slowing reflect the drifting apart between initially promising experimental and then disappointing clinical outcomes in the translational trials with well selected Parkinson's disease patients. A similar development concerns the emerging gap between novel developed drugs with improved pharmacokinetic behaviour and their limited use in the clinical practice following approval.

The authors summarized recommendations for the 2023 updated German guidelines on "Parkinson's disease" from the German Neurological Society (DGN), focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of these disorders.
Methods: The recommendations were based on literature reviews, other relevant guidelines, and expert opinions.

Background: Diagnostic criteria for progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) include midbrain atrophy in MRI and hypometabolism in [F]fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography (PET) as supportive features. Due to limited data regarding their relative and sequential value, there is no recommendation for an algorithm to combine both modalities to increase diagnostic accuracy. This study evaluated the added value of sequential imaging using state-of-the-art methods to analyse the images regarding PSP features.

Treatment complexities necessitate clear algorithms and strategies. Levodopa remains pivotal for Parkinson's tremor, though response variability exists.

An important section dealt with PD care concepts, which represent a particularly dynamic field of PD research, including their implementation in clinical practice. Parkinson's disease is the second most common age-associated neurodegenerative disease.

Increasing evidence suggests that motor impairments in untreated PD patients are linked to an excessive synchronization of cortex-BG activity at beta frequencies (13-30 Hz). Levodopa and subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) suppress pathological beta-band reverberation and improve the motor symptoms in PD.

Our first aim was to investigate differences in driving ability and performance between people with MS (PwMS) and those without any neurologic or psychiatric disease ("controls"). Secondly, we determined disease-related factors influencing driving ability in PwMS.

The use of medical Cannabis has increased in recent years due to changing legal circumstances in many countries. Approval exists only for a few neurological conditions such as rare forms of epilepsy or spasticity in multiple sclerosis. Beyond that, however, medical Cannabis is used for a wide range of neurological conditions and symptoms.

An increasing number of sexual assaults (SAs) are being reported. This study investigated associations between SA and FSD, conceptualized as bodily distress syndrome (BDS), and five functional somatic syndromes (FSSs): chronic widespread pain (CWP), irritable bowel (IB), chronic fatigue (CF), multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), and whiplash-associated disorder (WAD). Participants ( = 7493) from the population-based cohort Danish Study of Functional Disorders (DanFunD) completed questionnaires on FSD, emotional distress, SA, and sociodemographics.

Background: To date, studies on positron emission tomography (PET) with F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) usually included PSP cohorts overrepresenting patients with Richardson's syndrome (PSP-RS).
Objectives: To evaluate FDG-PET in a patient sample representing the broad phenotypic PSP spectrum typically encountered in routine clinical practice.
Methods: This retrospective, multicenter study included 41 PSP patients, 21 (51%) with RS and 20 (49%) with non-RS variants of PSP (vPSP), and 46 age-matched healthy controls.
To explore the influence of bilateral subthalamic deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) on car driving ability in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), we prospectively examined two age-matched, actively driving PD patient groups: one group undergone DBS-surgery (PD-DBS, n = 23) and one group that was eligible for DBS but did not undergo surgery (PD-nDBS, n = 29). In PD-DBS patients, investigation at Baseline was done just prior and at Follow-up 6-12 month after DBS-surgery. In PD-nDBS patients, time interval between Baseline and Follow-up was aimed to be comparable.

Analyzing data from the Care4PD patient survey, we (1) evaluated application frequency and type of DAT in a larger, nationwide, cross-sectoral PwP sample in Germany; (2) analyzed the frequency of symptoms indicative for advanced PD (aPD) and need for DAT amongst the remaining patients and (3) compared the most bothersome symptoms and need for professional long-term care (LTC) of patients with and without suspected aPD. Data from 1269 PwP were analyzed.

When weighing up the various therapy options, therapy with levodopa has recently been increasingly preferred due to its stronger efficacy and the ostensibly lower rate of side effects. The advantage of the lower incidence of motor complications during therapy with dopamine agonists was neglected.

Currently, its role in Parkinson's disease (PD) remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate that blood NfL can distinguish idiopathic PD from atypical parkinsonian syndromes (APS) with high sensitivity and specificity.

Methods: To identify relevant studies, different electronic databases were screened in accordance with PRISMA guidelines; this includes reference lists of review articles, primary studies, and trial registers for protocols. Furthermore, experts in the field were contacted.
Objective: Novel deep brain stimulation (DBS) systems allow directional and short-pulse stimulation to potentially improve symptoms and reduce side effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of short-pulse and directional stimulation, in addition to a combination of both, in the ventral intermediate thalamus (VIM)/posterior subthalamic area (PSA) on tremor and stimulation-induced side effects in patients with essential tremor.
Materials And Methods: We recruited 11 patients with essential tremor and VIM/PSA-DBS.
Background: Based on data regarding the prevalence of Parkinson's disease (PD), the prevalence of impulsive control disorders (ICD) in PD, and the percentage of PD patients driving a car, it has to be assumed that at least 50,000 PD patients with ICD in Germany actively drive a car. However, these patients might be at risk for unsafe driving due to ICD-related dysfunctions such as failure to resist an impulse or temptation, to control an act or other altered neurobehavioral processes.
Objective: This study determines the influence of ICD on driving ability in PD.
