Prevalence of Pancreatic Steatosis in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Patients.

Objectives: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic, immune-mediated disorders of the gastrointestinal system. Pancreas can be affected in IBD patients with a wide array of clinical conditions including acu-te pancreatitis, abnormalities of pancreatic duct and pancreatic insufficiency. Pancreatic steatosis (PS) is an important but often overlooked pathology of pancreas.

Is there a relationship between pregnant women's sexual attitudes and body image?

This research was conducted to investigate the relationship between women's attitudes toward sexuality during pregnancy and their body image and to determine the predictors of pregnant women's sexual attitudes. The research was conducted with 515 pregnant women in Turkey. Study data were collected using a sociodemographic data form, the Attitude Scale toward Sexuality during Pregnancy, and the Body Image in Pregnancy Scale.

A novel approach to antimicrobial resistance: Machine learning predictions for carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella in intensive care units.

This study was conducted at Kocaeli University Hospital in Turkey and aimed to predict carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae infection in intensive care units using the Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithm, a form of artificial intelligence. This was a retrospective case-control study involving 289 patients, including 159 carbapenem-resistant and 130 carbapenem-susceptible individuals as controls. The model's predictive analysis combined a diverse range of demographic, clinical, and laboratory data, resulting in an average accuracy of 83.

Bee venom and melittin: Potent key enzyme inhibitors with promising therapeutic potential.

Bee venom (BV) is a versatile product with extensive applications, boasting antibacterial and anticancer properties. Within this study, we focused on isolating melittin (Mel) from Apis mellifera L. venom and exploring the influence of both BV and Mel on specific enzymes, namely carbonic anhydrase (CA) I, CA II, CA IX, glutathione reductase (GR), acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), and neuraminidase (NA).

Design, synthesis and biological evaluation of novel benzocoumarin derivatives as potent inhibitors of MAO-B activity.

The continued research of novel reversible inhibitors targeting monoamine oxidase (MAO) B remains crucial for effectively symptomatic treatment of Parkinson's disease. In this study we synthesized and evaluated a new series of 3-aryl benzo[g] and benzo[h] coumarin derivatives as MAO-B inhibitors. Compound A6 has been found to display the most potent inhibitory activity and selectivity against the MAO-B isoform (IC = 13 nM and SI = >7693.

Agrochemical exposure is a major contributor to ecological declines worldwide, including the loss of crucial pollinator species. In addition to direct toxicity, field-relevant doses of pesticides can increase species' vulnerabilities to other stressors, including parasites. Experimental field demonstrations of potential interactive effects of pesticides and additional stressors are rare, as are tests of mechanisms via which pollinators tolerate pesticides.

Capacity for the management of kidney failure in the International Society of Nephrology Eastern and Central Europe region: report from the 2023 ISN Global Kidney Health Atlas (ISN-GKHA).

Delivery of care for kidney failure (KF) globally has a significant disparity; even in some countries, it means end of life for the person. The International Society of Nephrology Global Kidney Health Atlas (ISN-GKHA) tries to address gaps in KF care and standardize global nephrology care. From the third iteration of the ISN-GKHA, we present data for countries in the ISN Eastern and Central Europe region.

LGBTI Healthcare in Medical Education.

Our aim is to reveal the interaction of cultural and religious influences with professional equipment by determining the level of knowledge, sexual attitudes, and homophobia of medical students about LGBTI+ individuals. The study included 324 students from our faculty of medicine. The Hudson and Ricketts Homophobia scale, the Attitudes Towards Lesbians and Gay Men scale, and the Hendrick Sexual Attitudes scale were used with the sociodemograpic data form.

Analysis of Surgical Masks Adverse Effects on Facial Skin in Long Term Usage During COVID-19 Pandemic.

Objectives: During the coronavirus disease-2019 pandemic, masks have become mandatory for protection against the virus transmitted by breathing. This study examined the impact of surgical masks used daily on civilian facial skin.

Materials And Methods: Moisture, elasticity, pore, melanin, acne, wrinkle, and sensitivity parameters of 83 volunteers were measured numerically using an API-100 skin analyzer and camera recordings.

Involvement of Escherichia coli YbeX/CorC in ribosomal metabolism.

YbeX of Escherichia coli, a member of the CorC protein family, is encoded in the same operon with ribosome-associated proteins YbeY and YbeZ. Here, we report the involvement of YbeX in ribosomal metabolism. The ΔybeX cells accumulate distinct 16S rRNA degradation intermediates in the 30S particles and the 70S ribosomes.

Comparison of Computed Tomography Findings between Adult and Pediatric COVID-19 Patients.

Purpose: This study aims to compare chest computed tomography (CT) findings between adult and pediatric patients with coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pneumonia.

Materials And Methods: This study included 30 pediatric patients aged 1 to 17 years and 30 adult patients over 18 years of age with COVID-19 pneumonia confirmed by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) who have findings related to COVID-19 on Chest Computed Tomography. The CT findings of adult and pediatric patients were compared with a z-test.

The preservation effect of biodegradable gelatin coating incorporated with grape seed oil on glazed shrimp.

Background: This study was conducted to investigate the quality and shelf life of shrimps (Parapenaeus longirostris, Lucas 1846) glazed with biodegradable gelatin solutions combined with grape (Vitis vinifera L.) seed oil (GSO). Therefore, shrimps were divided into five groups and were glazed with distilled water (control), G (gelatin), G + 5% GSO (gelatin with 5% GSO), G + 10% GSO (gelatin with 10% GSO) and G + 15% GSO (gelatin with 15% GSO).

EFHC1 gene mutation profile of Turkish JME patients and its association with disease risk.

Objectives: Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) is a common form of generalized epilepsy with an important genetic component. This cohort study aimed to examine the frequency of EFHC1 gene variants in Turkish JME patients and a healthy control group and evaluate the association between these mutations and disease risk.

Methods: We screened 72 JME patients with a mean age of 31.

The relationship between computed tomography findings and ocular trauma and pediatric ocular trauma scores in pediatric globe injuries: Does imaging have prognostic and diagnostic value?

Background: The aim of this study is to assess the relationship between computed tomography (CT) findings in open globe injuries (OGIs) in pediatric patients and the pediatric ocular trauma score (POTS) and OTS in pediatric ocular trauma.

Methods: In 34 pediatric patients with OGI, CT findings were categorized into nine main categories: Scleral irregularity, lens dislocation, abnormal vitreous density, choroid-retinal layer thickening, preseptal thickness increase, intraocular foreign body and air, vitreous hemorrhage, retinal detachment, and perforation. The relationship between different types and numbers of CT findings and the POTS and OTS was evaluated.

The Impact of CoronaVac Vaccination on 28-day Mortality Rate of Critically Ill Patients with COVID-19 in Türkiye.

Background: Vaccines against coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) have been effective in preventing symptomatic diseases, hospitalizations, and intensive care unit (ICU) admissions. However, data regarding the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines in reducing mortality among critically ill patients with COVID-19 remains unclear.

Aims: To determine the vaccination status and investigate the impact of the COVID-19 vaccine on the 28-day mortality in critically ill patients with COVID-19.

Young people's happiness in the context of negative life events and coping strategies: a latent profile and latent class analysis.

Young people have to cope with many negative life events and stress factors to maintain their happiness. Although there are studies on how they benefit from different coping strategies and their results, there is no study that profiles/groups young people according to negative life events and coping styles. From this point of view, the study aims to determine different life events classes and stress coping profiles in young people, and to examine the differences in happiness among the new groups created according to the discovered classes and profiles.

Arylcoumarin and novel biscoumarin derivatives as potent inhibitors of human glutathione S-transferase.

A series of arylcoumarin derivatives and two novel biscoumarin derivatives were investigated for their human recombinant glutathione S-transferase P1-1 (GSTP1-1) enzyme inhibitory activities for the first time. 4-(3,4-Dihydroxyphenyl)-6,7-dihydroxycoumarin (compound ) was observed to be the most active coumarin derivative (IC: 0.14 µM).

Thermoreversible Gel Formulation for the Intranasal Delivery of Salmon Calcitonin and Comparison Studies of Bioavailability.

Objectives: We developed original thermoreversible (sol-gel) formulations of salmon calcitonin (sCT) for nasal applications. The sol-gel has been compared with commercial intranasal sprays and studies. The aim of studying sol-gel form is to arrange the viscosity of formulations for a reversible adequate fluidity at different temperatures.

A Comprehensive Study on Peppermint Oil and Cinnamon Oil as Nanoemulsion: Preparation, Stability, Cytotoxicity, Antimicrobial, Antifungal, and Antioxidant Activity.

Background: Recent studies have shown that nanoemulsions prepared with essential oils have significant antimicrobial potential against multidrug-resistant pathogens due to increased chemical stability. Nanoemulsion also promotes controlled and sustained release, which increases their bioavailability and efficacy against multidrug-resistant bacteria.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the antimicrobial, antifungal, antioxidant, and cytotoxicity properties of cinnamon essential oil and peppermint essential oil as nanoemulsions compared to pure forms.

Evaluation of rescue techniques following failed laryngoscopy: A multicenter prospective observational study.

Objective: The Fourth National Audit Project revealed that severe airway complications occur in the frequency of 1/22,000. Various rescue techniques were recommended in difficult airway guidelines. This study aims to evaluate the rescue techniques following failed direct laryngoscopy and analyze the success rates and potential complications during difficult airway management.

Blood pressure parameters affecting ventricular repolarization in obese children.

Background: Ventricular repolarization (VR) increases the risk of sudden cardiac death due to ventricular arrhythmia. We aimed to evaluate the blood pressure (BP) parameters affecting VR in obese children.

Methods: Obese (BMI ≥ 95p) and healthy children ≥ 120 cm between January 2017 and June 2019 were included.

Sodium hyaluronate dry powder inhalation in combination with sodium cromoglycate prepared using optimized spray drying conditions.

Sodium hyaluronate (SHA) is an anti-inflammatory and protective agent against bronchoconstriction, and sodium cromoglicate (SCG) prevents exercise-induced bronchoconstriction and inflammation. Based on the pharmacological properties of both substances, this study aimed to develop a dry powder inhaler (DPI) of SHA alone and in combination with SCG. The target of the study was to develop flowable formulations without any surfactants by using the spray drying method.
