Cytokines and Other Laboratory Parameters of Hospitalized COVID-19 Patients that Predict Intensive Care Unit Admission.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the roles of cytokines and other laboratory parameters in determining the need for intensive care in COVID-19 patients.

Methods: This is a retrospective observational study. Demographic, clinical, and laboratory parameters of the patients were evaluated.

Genetic variations in Turkey cultivar and ecotype Medicago sativa species: cytological, total protein profile, and molecular characterization.

Background: Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is a perennial plant, which is high in nutritional value and resistant to environmental conditions, and it is one of most frequently preferred feed crop among the leguminous family. In this study, it was aimed to determine the genetic diversity of some alfalfa ecotypes and their varieties by DNA, protein, nucleus, and chromosome counts.

In vitro effects of CaO nanoparticles on Triticale callus exposed to short and long-term salt stress.

Ca NPs enhanced tolerance of Triticale callus under salt stress by improving biochemical activity and confocal laser scanning analysis, conferring salt tolerance on callus cells. CaO NPs (Ca) are significant components that act as transducers in many adaptive and developmental processes in plants. In this study, effect of Ca NPs on the response and regulation of the protective system in Triticale callus under short and long-salt treatments was investigated.

Effect of Triclosan-Coated Suture and Antibiotic Prophylaxis on Infection and Recurrence after Karydakis Flap Repair for Pilonidal Disease: A Randomized Parallel-Arm Double-Blinded Clinical Trial.

Background: Pilonidal sinus disease was first described by Mayo in 1833 as "a cyst that contains hair." Although surgical treatment of the lesions can have successful outcomes, it also can be associated with relatively high rates of post-operative infectioins and recurrence. Many studies have demonstrated that triclosan-coated sutures (TCS) decrease surgical site infections.

Are Helicobacter Pylori and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Related, and If So, How?

Purpose: Although many virulence factors have been defined for Helicobacter pylori (HP), vacuolating cytotoxin A (VacA) is known to be associated with apoptosis, the cag pathogenicity island protein (Cag-PAI), and growth factors. Both apoptosis and growth factors are thought to be related to the etiology of benign prostatic hyperpla­sia (BPH). Additionally, the relation between atherosclerosis-BPH and atherosclerosis-HP has also been reported in a limited number of studies.

Syntheses, crystallographic, mass-spectroscopic determination and antioxidant studies of Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes of a new imidazol based Schiff base.

A new imidazole-based Schiff base, 2-((1H-imidazol-4-yl)methyleneamino)benzylalcohol (HL) and corresponding analogous bis(2-((1H-imidazol-4-yl)methyleneimino)benzylalcohol)metal(II) perchlorates (M: Co(1), Ni(2), Cu(3)) have prepared and characterized by elemental analyses, ESI-MS, IR, UV-Vis spectroscopies and conductivity measurements. X-ray single crystal structures of 1 and 2 have been also determined. Elemental analyses, spectroscopic and conductance data of 3 demonstrated similar structural features with these of crystallographically characterized complexes and based upon this relevances, HL ligands are neutrally coordinated to metal(II) ions in tridentate mode and all complexes are isostructural, dicathionic, contain perchlorate anions as complementary ions and, are in octahedral geometry with the formulae of [M(HL)2](ClO4)2 (for 3) and [M(HL)2](ClO4)2·H2O (for 1 and 2).

The effects of aminoguanidine, methylprednisolone, and melatonin on nerve recovery in peripheral facial nerve neurorrhaphy.

Background: The medications may enhance the recovery after nerve paralysis. We aimed to evaluate the effects of aminoguanidine (AG), melatonin, and methylprednisolone on peripheral facial nerve neurorrhaphy.

Methods: The buccal branch of the facial nerve was transected and autografted in 32 New Zealand rabbits.

Unilateral inferior turbinate bone hypertrophy: is it compensatory or congenital?

Background: This study evaluates the degree of the unilateral hypertrophied inferior turbinate (HIT) by computed tomography (CT) and determines and compares the enlargement of the turbinate bone and soft tissue in different parts of the HIT in pediatric and adult groups.

Methods: Both pediatric and adult patients were studied in two groups: those with a straight or nearly straight septum (n = 25 and 124, respectively) and those with deviation (n = 64 and 129, respectively). The cross-sectional area (CSA) of the IT bone and soft tissue were measured at anterior, middle, and posterior thirds of the IT in coronal CT sections.

Comparison of conventional and low dose steroid in the treatment of PFAPA syndrome: preliminary study.

Background: Steroids have been widely used to relief symptoms in the patients with PFAPA syndrome.

Objectives: This study was constructed to show the effectiveness of low-dose steroid therapy in patients diagnosed with PFAPA syndrome.

Methods: 41 patients (86 febrile attacks) who were diagnosed using the criteria suggested by Thomas et al.

Electronic structure modeling of dinuclear copper(II)-methacrylic acid complex by density functional theory.

A dinuclear centrosymmetric copper(II) complex with the formula [Cu(2)(mu-maa)(4)(maaH)(2)] has been synthesized and experimentally characterized by IR, electronic spectroscopy, and X-ray single-crystal diffractometry. Starting from experimental X-ray geometry and using antiferromagnetic singlet ground state, gas phase geometry optimization was performed by density functional hybrid (B3LYP) method with 6-31G(d) and LANL2DZ basis sets. Gas-phase vibrational frequencies and single point energy (SPE) calculations have been carried out at the geometry-optimized structure.

In the title compound, C(10)H(9)N(2) (+)·C(6)H(4)NO(5)S(-), the dihedral angle between the aromatic rings of the cation is 9.42 (7)°. In the crystal, the anions and cations are linked by C-H⋯O and N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, generating R(2) (1)(5) and R(4) (4)(14) rings, respectively.

Diaqua-bis(ethyl-enediamine-κN,N')copper(II) 2,2'-dithio-dinicotinate sesquihydrate.

In the title compound, [Cu(C(2)H(8)N(2))(2)](C(12)H(6)N(2)O(4)S(2))·1.5H(2)O, there are two half-molecules of the cationic complex in the asymmetric unit. The Cu(2+) ions lie on inversion centres and are octa-hedrally coordinated by two ethyl-enediamine (en) and two aqua ligands in a typical Jahn-Teller distorted environment with the water O atoms in the axial positions.

Urinary N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase levels in patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

Objective: Tumour markers play an important role in the diagnosis of cancer and the early detection of recurrences during follow-up. This study aimed to assess the clinical value of measuring urinary N-acetyl-beta-d-glucosaminidase (U-NAG) levels in patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

Design: Prospective, controlled study.

The title compound, alternatively named sodium 6-nitro-3H-1,2,3-benzoxathiazole 2,2-dioxide monohydrate, Na+*C6H3N2O5S-*H2O, consists of chains of NaO7 units, with the seven donor-O atoms coming from two water molecules and five p-nitrobenzoxasulfamate anions. The seven-coordinate geometry around the Na+ ion is described as monocapped trigonal prismatic, but with a large distortion from ideal geometry. Each triangular face is defined by one O atom each from a water molecule, a nitro group and a sulfonyl group.
