Knowledge and attitudes of preclinical and clinical medical students toward epilepsy: A cross-sectional study from Turkey.

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the epilepsy-related knowledge and attitudes toward epilepsy in medical students. In addition, these parameters were evaluated according to national geographic regions, preclinical and clinical characteristics.

Methods: This study was a cross-sectional, observational design and it was conducted among medical students in a centrally located city, Turkey.

LesionScanNet: dual-path convolutional neural network for acute appendicitis diagnosis.

Acute appendicitis is an abrupt inflammation of the appendix, which causes symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, and fever. Computed tomography (CT) is a useful tool in accurate diagnosis of acute appendicitis; however, it causes challenges due to factors such as the anatomical structure of the colon and localization of the appendix in CT images. In this paper, a novel Convolutional Neural Network model, namely, LesionScanNet for the computer-aided detection of acute appendicitis has been proposed.

Relationship between sST2 and NT-proBNP levels and postoperative atrial fibrillation in patients having non-cardiac surgery.

Background: We explored the link between sST2 and NT-proBNP levels and postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) incidence in non-cardiac surgery patients in this study.

Methods: The research involved 302 participants over 40 years old who underwent medium and/or high-risk non-cardiac surgeries. These patients were divided into two groups: those who developed POAF and those who did not.

Prognostic impact of fibrinogen in patients with resistant hypertension.

In this study, we investigated the long-term prognostic effects of fibrinogen levels in patients with resistant hypertension. A total of 266 patients with resistant hypertension who had serum fibrinogen measurements and 5 years of follow-up information were retrospectively included in the study. The patients were stratified according to their fibrinogen levels, which were then divided into tertiles.

Aortic Arch Calcification in Predicting Unfavorable Angiographic Outcomes for Patients with ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction Undergoing Percutaneous Coronary Intervention.

Background: Despite advances in treatment, no-reflow, large thrombus burden (LTB), and myocardial blush grade (MBG) are associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes in ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Aortic arch calcification (AAC) is associated with subclinical atherosclerosis and adverse cardiovascular events. We aimed to examine the relationship between AAC and unfavorable angiographic outcomes such as no-reflow, MBG, and LTB in STEMI patients undergoing PCI.

Single-Stranded DNA Gap Accumulation Is a Functional Biomarker for USP1 Inhibitor Sensitivity.

Recent studies suggest that PARP and POLQ inhibitors confer synthetic lethality in BRCA1-deficient tumors by accumulation of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) gaps at replication forks. Loss of USP1, a deubiquitinating enzyme, is also synthetically lethal with BRCA1 deficiency, and USP1 inhibitors are now undergoing clinical development for these cancers. Herein, we show that USP1 inhibitors also promote the accumulation of ssDNA gaps during replication in BRCA1-deficient cells, and this phenotype correlates with drug sensitivity.

The Prognostic Value of the Triglyceride-Glucose Index in Forecasting Ten-Year Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events in Non-Diabetic Patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction Undergoing Percutaneous Coronary Intervention.

Objective: This study aimed to explore the association between the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) over a ten-year period in non-diabetic patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI) undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).

Methods: We included 375 consecutive non-diabetic patients presenting with acute MI who underwent primary PCI. The TyG index was calculated and patients were divided based on a cut-off value of ≥ 8.

Evaluation of the Clinical, Laboratory and Radiology Findings and Treatment Methods of Children with Acute Bronchiolitis: Experience of a Tertiary Center.

Objectives: The aim of this study is to determine the factors affecting the duration of hospitalization and causing the initiation of antibiotics in children with acute bronchiolitis.

Methods: This study was conducted retrospectively in Konya Training and Research Hospital. Demographic data, clinical features, laboratory and radiological findings, treatment methods and duration of hospitalization of 102 patients followed up in the pediatric service between September 2017 and April 2019 (in autumn, winter and spring seasons) were recorded from patient files.

Lacidipine, thiamine pyrophosphate and their combination on the ocular ischemic syndrome induced by bilateral common carotid artery ligation.

Aim: To investigate the effect of lacidipine, thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) and the combination of lacidipine and TPP against oxidative and inflammatory eye damage induced by bilateral common carotid artery ligation in rats.

Methods: Male albino Wistar rats were categorized as those who underwent sham surgery (SG), right and left common carotid cross-clamping and unclamping procedure (CCU), lacidipine+CCU (LCCU), TPP+CCU (TCCU), and combination of lacidipine and TPP (LTC)+CCU (LTCCU). One hour before anesthesia, the LCCU (=6) received lacidipine (4 mg/kg, orally) and the TCCU (=6) received TPP (20 mg/kg, intraperitoneally).

Background And Aims: We aimed to investigate the relationship between triglyceride glucose (TyG) index and intracoronary thrombus burden in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) who underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).

Methods And Results: A total of 468 consecutive patients who were admitted with STEMI and underwent primary PCI were included in the study. TyG index was calculated as ln [fasting triglycerides (mg/dL) × fasting plasma glucose (mg/dL)/2].

Effects of acute exposure to environmentally realistic tebuconazole concentrations on stress responses of kidney and digestive gland of Lymnaea stagnalis.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of 24 and 72 h exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of tebuconazole (TEB) (10, 100 and 500 µg/L) fungicide on the freshwater snail Lymnaea stagnalis. The focus was induction of oxidative stress, alteration of gene expressions and histopathological changes in the kidney and digestive gland. TEB treatment induced a time- and concentration-dependent increase in intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, while the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) was decreased.

ΔNp63 Regulates Homeostasis, Stemness, and Suppression of Inflammation in the Adult Epidermis.

The p63 transcription factor is critical for epidermis formation in embryonic development, but its role in the adult epidermis is poorly understood. In this study, we show that acute genetic ablation of ΔNp63, the main p63 isoform, in adult epidermis disrupts keratinocyte proliferation and self-maintenance and, unexpectedly, triggers an inflammatory psoriasis-like condition. Mechanistically, single-cell RNA sequencing revealed the downregulation of cell cycle genes, upregulation of differentiation markers, and induction of several proinflammatory pathways in ΔNp63-ablated keratinocytes.

The relationship between metabolic syndrome criteria and pentraxin-3 levels in children.

Objectives: While the positive correlation was shown in a few studies which investigated the relationship between obesity and pentraxin-3 (PTX-3) levels, different findings were obtained in other studies. We aimed to determine PTX-3 levels in obese and healthy children, and their relationship with Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) criteria.

Methods: 105 children and adolescents were considered as the study population.

Background: Hartmann's procedure (HP) is commonly applied to resolve acute clinical conditions in most cases with colonic obstruction or perforation. HP and the closure of the end colostomy are associated with high morbidity-mortality rates. In our study, we aimed to report our clinical experience in HP.

Patients (n = 143) were admitted with STEMI and followed up for 2 years. The study population was divided into high and low galectin-3 groups based on the admission median value of serum galectin-3.

Pulmonary Embolism Severity Index Predicts Adverse Events in Hospitalized COVID-19 Patients: A Retrospective Observational Study.

Objectives: Pulmonary embolism is one of the leading causes of death in patients with COVID-19. Autopsy findings showed that the incidence of thromboembolic events was higher than clinically suspected. In this study, the authors investigated the relationship between pulmonary embolism severity index (PESI) and simplified PESI (sPESI) on admission to the hospital, as well as adverse events in hospitalized COVID-19 patients without clinically documented venous and/or pulmonary embolism.

Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on colonoscopy results - an overview.

<b>Aim:</b> Colorectal cancers are common cancers. Colonoscopy procedure, which is applied in the early diagnosis and treatment of this disease, has a very important role. In this study, we aimed to examine the effect of the COVİD-19 pandemic period on our colonoscopic procedures.

Targeting mitochondrial DNA polymerase gamma for selective inhibition of MLH1 deficient colon cancer growth.

Synthetic lethality in DNA repair pathways is an important strategy for the selective treatment of cancer cells without harming healthy cells and developing cancer-specific drugs. The synthetic lethal interaction between the mismatch repair (MMR) protein, MutL homolog 1 (MLH1), and the mitochondrial base excision repair protein, DNA polymerase γ (Pol γ) was used in this study for the selective treatment of MLH1 deficient cancers. Germline mutations in the MLH1 gene and aberrant MLH1 promoter methylation result in an increased risk of developing many cancers, including nonpolyposis colorectal and endometrial cancers.

Analysis of upper gastrointestinal endoscopy results during the Covid-19 pandemic. A high-volume single-Center experience.

Purpose: The histopathological effects of the COVID-19 period on the upper gastrointestinal system are not clearly known. This study is the first in the literature to compare the results of upper endoscopic biopsy before and during the COVID- 19 period.

Methods: Data of 10510 patients who underwent upper endoscopy with a given biopsy sample during the procedure between March 2019 and March 2021 were retrospectively scanned.
