Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the leading dementia among the elderly with complex origins. Despite extensive investigation into the AD-associated protein-coding genes, the involvement of noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) and posttranscriptional modification (PTM) in AD pathogenesis remains unclear. Here, we comprehensively characterized the landscape of ncRNAs and PTM events in 1460 samples across six brain regions sourced from the Mount Sinai/JJ Peters VA Medical Center Brain Bank Study and Mayo cohorts, encompassing 33,321 long ncRNAs, 92,897 enhancer RNAs, 53,763 alternative polyadenylation events, and 900,221 A-to-I RNA editing events.

Article Synopsis
  • Asymptomatic Alzheimer's disease (AsymAD) is characterized by the presence of Alzheimer's pathology in individuals who maintain cognitive function, showing lower neuroinflammation compared to symptomatic Alzheimer's disease cases.
  • Research using postmortem brain samples revealed that AsymAD subjects have unique characteristics such as enriched core plaques and reduced tau aggregation, along with increased microglial activity around amyloid plaques.
  • The study suggests that the composition of the plaque microenvironment, particularly enhanced actin-based motility pathways in microglia, may play a key role in the resilience to Alzheimer's pathology and cognitive decline in AsymAD individuals.

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations like the common L858R and exon 19 deletions are well studied, but rarer mutations like exon 19 insertions have received less attention. This case report describes a patient with this uncommon EGFR exon 19 insertion mutation in metastatic lung adenocarcinoma. A 51-year-old male nonsmoker with metastatic lung adenocarcinoma and a rare EGFR exon 19 insertion mutation experienced disease progression on initial carboplatin-pemetrexed chemotherapy.

Millimeter-wave and terahertz integrated circuits and chips are expected to serve as the backbone for future wireless networks and high resolution sensing. However, design of these integrated circuits and chips can be quite complex, requiring years of human expertise, careful tailoring of hand crafted circuit topologies and co-design with parameterized and pre-selected templates of electromagnetic structures. These structures (radiative and non-radiative, single-port and multi-ports) are subsequently optimized through ad-hoc methods and parameter sweeps.

Article Synopsis
  • Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) improves functional mitral regurgitation (FMR) by coordinating heart muscle segments, especially between papillary muscles, beyond just boosting left ventricular (LV) performance.
  • Eighteen patients with dilated cardiomyopathy underwent tests to measure heart function, and biventricular pacing showed a significant reduction in mitral regurgitation despite some patients showing no change in LV pressure.
  • The study concludes that CRT effectively lowers FMR independently of LV systolic function improvements, highlighting the importance of understanding its mechanisms for better treatment outcomes.

Background: Dissociative amnesia, a disorder characterized by impairments in multiple memory areas, is frequently associated with trauma. Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) is marked by mood dysregulation, negative self-concept, and impaired interpersonal relationships, in addition to the classic symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The relationship between CPTSD and dissociative amnesia, as well as whether CPTSD should be considered a dissociative subtype, remains uncertain in the literature.

Elimination of cytotoxic effect in cells with multidrug resistance (MDR) phenotype is a situation that is gradually acquired over time and develops through multiple pathways resulting in global phenotypic changes of cells. Although molecular background of the resistance phenotype has widely been studied in the gene expression level, segmental and gene copy number variations (CNVs) have limitedly been documented. Thus, in the present study, we aimed to analyze the CNVs using DNA microarray in the sensitive and two doxorubicin-resistant MCF-7 breast cancer cell lines which had different resistance indices.
