Predicting Severe Respiratory Failure in Patients with COVID-19: A Machine Learning Approach.

Studies attempting to predict the development of severe respiratory failure in patients with a COVID-19 infection using machine learning algorithms have yielded different results due to differences in variable selection. We aimed to predict the development of severe respiratory failure, defined as the need for high-flow oxygen support, continuous positive airway pressure, or mechanical ventilation, in patients with COVID-19, using machine learning algorithms to identify the most important variables in achieving this prediction. This retrospective, cross-sectional study included COVID-19 patients with mild respiratory failure (mostly receiving oxygen through a mask or nasal cannula).

Multicenter evaluation of ceftazidime-avibactam use in carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae bloodstream infections in OXA-48 endemic regions.

Data in the literature on the use of ceftazidime-avibactam (CAZ-AVI) in carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae bloodstream infections (CRKP-BSIs) are limited especially in OXA-48 (Oxacillinase-48) predominant regions. Our study aimed to evaluate the effect of CAZ-AVI use on outcomes in CRKP-BSIs in Turkey, where OXA-48 is endemic. A multicenter retrospective observational study was conducted between January 2017 and September 2021.

Ceftazidime-Avibactam Versus Polymyxin-Based Combination Therapies: A Study on 30-Day Mortality in Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacterales Bloodstream Infections in an OXA-48-Endemic Region.

: Ceftazidime-avibactam (CAZ-AVI) is recommended as first-line treatment for Oxacillinase-48 (OXA-48) β-Lactamase-producing carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) infections, while polymyxin-based combination therapies (PBCTs) are used as a last resort when CAZ-AVI is unavailable. Research comparing the effectiveness of CAZ-AVI and PBCT in CRE blood stream infections (CRE-BSIs) is limited, mostly focusing on carbapenemase (KPC)-producing isolates. In Turkey, OXA-48 is endemic and OXA-48-Like is common.

Small world properties of schizophrenia and OCD patients derived from fNIRS based functional brain network connectivity metrics.

Individuals suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and schizophrenia (SCZ) frequently exhibit symptoms of cognitive disassociations, which are linked to poor functional integration among brain regions. The loss of functional integration can be assessed using graph metrics computed from functional connectivity matrices (FCMs) derived from neuroimaging data. Liver Fatty Acid-binding Protein Is a More Reliable Biomarker for Liver Injury in Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis than Other Etiologies of Hepatitis.

Background/aims:  Liver fatty acid-binding protein (LFABP) controls hepatocyte lipid metabolism and can be a biomarker in liver diseases. We compared the correlation of LFABP levels with liver histology in viral hepatitis and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and investigated the utility of serum LFABP as a biomarker for liver damage.

Materials And Methods:  We included 142 patients (60 chronic viral hepatitis B [CHB], 35 chronic viral hepatitis C [CHC], 47 NAFLD) and 40 healthy controls.

Effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on diabetes-related oral complications.

Background: Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease characterized by uncontrolled blood sugar levels, which lead to end-organ damage. Thymoquinone oxime synthesis and its effects on melanoma cells: cytotoxic, genotoxic, and apoptotic evaluation.

Strong evidence supports the anticancer properties of natural plant product isolates. The cytotoxic, genotoxic, and apoptotic properties of an oxime derivative of thymoquinone (TQ) in melanoma cancer cells were investigated. The structure of TQ-Oxime was elucidated through nuclear magnetic resonance, and its effect on B16F10 and L929 cell lines was assessed using a luminometric adenosine triphosphate assay.

Barodontalgia during hyperbaric oxygen therapy of an 8-year-old male: A case report.

Barodontalgia, barometric pressure-induced dental pain, may occur during hyperbaric oxygen(HBO) therapy due to pressure changes. This case report presents an 8-year-old male patient with barodontalgia. The patient declared a severe toothache during HBO therapy.

Registry-Based Retrospective Cohort Study of Mortality among Adults Admitted to Intensive Care Units in Istanbul with Hospital Acquired Bloodstream-Infection between 2014-2021.

Background: Managing bloodstream infections (BSIs) is challenging due to increasing antimicrobial resistance, limited therapeutic options, and high mortality rates. In this study, we aimed to identify 30-day mortality risk factors and assess infectious diseases consultants' preferences for combination or monotherapy.

Methods: The study was conducted in four hospitals in Istanbul, Turkey, involving 140 adult ICU beds and 336,780 ICU-bed-days between 1 January 2014, and 31 December 2021.

Association between Helicobacter pylori infection and colorectal polyps.

It was aimed to investigate whether the Helicobacter pylori infection is related to the frequency, localization, size and number of colorectal polyps. The data of 4561 patients who underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy were analyzed retrospectively. Patients with and without polyps at colonoscopy were grouped and the frequency of H pylori infection was compared in these patients.

Evaluation of maxillary sinus volumes and pathologies in children with and without cleft lip and palate using cone beam computed tomography.

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the maxillary sinus (MS) volume and pathologies, nasal septum (NS) deviation, and MS septa formation in children with and without cleft lip and palate (CLP); also to investigate the possible causes of MS pathologies.

Materials And Methods: Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) images of 200 (100 CLP, 100 control) children (5-18 years old) were evaluated from the computer database of Marmara University Faculty of Dentistry. Children with a history of maxillofacial trauma, diseases that affect bone metabolism, orthognathic surgery, extrinsic pathologies of the MS, and accompanying syndromes were excluded.

Iatrogenic systemic botulism after intragastric botulinum neurotoxin injection: Case report.

Background And Purpose: The recent off-label use of botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) for intragastric obesity treatment has led to 67 cases of systemic botulism in Türkiye, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. This case report highlights the potential risks and adverse effects associated with this treatment.

Incidence of dental barotrauma and temporomandibular joint problems of divers in Turkey.

Introduction: In this study, we aimed to examine dental barotrauma and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) complaints in a large group of divers.

Methods: This survey study included scuba divers older than 18. The questionnaire contained 25 questions about the demographic characteristics of divers, dental health behaviors, and diving-related dental, sinus and/or temporomandibular joint pain.

Investigation of ceftazidime-avibactam susceptibility in clinical isolates of gram-negative bacteria.

Background: Our study investigated the susceptibility rate of ceftazidime-avibactam and the risk factors associated with its resistance by analyzing gram-negative bacteria isolated from various patient samples.

Methods: Between March and November 2020, 1119 gram-negative bacteria strains were isolated from patient samples in Acıbadem Healthcare Group hospitals; ceftazidime-avibactam susceptibility results were evaluated using a 10/4µg (Oxoid, UK) disc and evaluated according to Eucast 2020 recommendations. Patient and isolate characteristics that could be risk factors were retrospectively investigated and statistically analyzed using SPSS 25.

Purpose: The study aimed to evaluate the possible preventive effect of two concentrations (3 and 5% w/w) of Eugenia jambolana (EJ) extract against 5-FU-induced mucositis.

Method: Sixteen adult rats were separated into four groups: two control and two preventive groups. Animals in Groups 1, 2, and 3 were injected intraperitoneally with 60 mg/kg/day of 5-FU on Day 1 followed by 150 mg/kg/day on Day 5.

A diving physician's experience of dental barotrauma during hyperbaric chamber exposure: case report.

Evaluation of Oxidative Stress and Inflammatory Biomarkers Pre and Post-Treatment in New Diagnosed Atherosclerotic Patients.

Atherosclerosis is a chronic vascular inflammatory disease associated to oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction. It is characterized by lipid accumulation in the arterial wall, increased hyperlipidemia, oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation, and protein oxidation. Our study included 45 patients ages of 40-60 and 45 healthy volunteers with similar demographic characteristics without any chronic disease as well.

The Role of Pneumococcal Pneumonia among Community-Acquired Pneumonia in Adult Turkish Population: TurkCAP Study.

Objective: To evaluate the rate of pneumococcal pneumonia (PP) among patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in Turkey and to investigate and compare features of PP and non-PP CAP patients.

Material And Methods: This multicenter, non-interventional, prospective, observational study included adult CAP patients (age ≥ 18 years). Diagnosis of PP was based on the presence of at least 1 positive laboratory test result for Streptococcus pneumoniae (blood culture or sputum culture or urinary antigen test [UAT]) in patients with radiographic findings of pneumonia.

Factors associated with bleeding complications in hernia repair of warfarin users.
