Caffeine use in preterm neonates: national insights into Turkish NICU practices.

Objective: Caffeine is a proven medication used for the prevention and treatment of apnea in premature infants, offering both short- and long-term benefits. International guidelines provide a range of recommendations regarding the preterm population eligible for caffeine prophylaxis, including the timing, dosage, and duration of treatment. Our national guidelines, published prior to the most recent updates of the international guidelines, recommend the use of caffeine citrate starting from the first day after delivery for preterm infants with a gestational age of <28 weeks.

Hearing loss configurations in low- and middle-income countries.

Objective: The majority of individuals with hearing loss worldwide reside in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), but there is limited information regarding the characteristics of hearing loss in these regions. This descriptive study aims to address this knowledge gap by analysing audiogram patterns in LMIC populations. Greater knowledge about the properties of hearing loss in LMICs allows for improved planning of interventions.

Exploring Turkish women's gynecological examination perceptions based on their metaphors: a qualitative study.

Background: During the gynecological examination, women especially feel uncomfortable with the lithotomy position and experience shame and anxiety. This study aims to explore metaphors used by women who have experienced gynecological examinations.

Methods: This study is qualitative and phenomenological.

Missed nursing care and its causes and effects on moral distress in neonatal intensive care nurses.

Background: Deficiencies emerge in the care provided by nurses because of the complex treatment plans, shortage of labour resources and communication problems in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Knowing how to provide quality patient care but being unable to maintain it because of individual or institutional issues can lead to moral distress among nurses.

Aim: This study aimed to examine missed nursing care in NICUs and its relationship with the moral distress experienced by nurses.

A Novel and Promising Method for Prediction of Early Surfactant Requirement in Preterm Infants With Respiratory Distress Syndrome: Pulmonary Near-Infrared Spectroscopy.

Introduction: Non-invasive monitoring techniques have been used more commonly in neonatal clinical practice. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of lung near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) for determination of the severity of Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) and the requirement of surfactant therapy in preterm infants.

Methods: A total of 60 preterm infants with RDS were evaluated in terms of the requirement of surfactant therapy, as surfactant group (SG) or no-surfactant group (CG).

Objectives: While technological advancements have enabled the utilization of smartphones for acoustic voice analysis, existing studies have predominantly focused on the adult population. However, dysphonia is prevalent in children, and their anatomy and physiology are different from those of adults. Thus, this paper aims to investigate the feasibility of using smartphones to record children's voices for acoustic voice analysis.

: The use of additional biomarkers to predict clinical course in diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is becoming increasingly important. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels and the length of stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) in patients with DKA without signs of infection and to investigate the relationship between the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) albumin ratio (CAR). : This retrospective, single-center study included 78 patients with DKA without infection who were treated in the Medical ICU between July 2022 and June 2024.

Quick Response and Management of Patients During a Mass Casualty Incident: Experiences After 2023 Türkiye Earthquake.

A devastating series of earthquakes hit Kahramanmaraş, Türkiye on February 6, 2023, affecting 14 million people. A true mass casualty incident, these earthquakes reminded us of the importance of being ready and able to address the consequences. Our clinic is a central referral center so during the first few days we had to treat hundreds of patients transferred to us with compartment syndrome in the upper extremities, finger amputations, tissue defects, and infected open wounds.
