In this study, we studied serum calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, thyroid hormones (total thyroxine, free thyroxine, thyroid-stimulating hormone), parathyroid hormone, and osteocalcine levels in children with epilepsy who had been receiving long-term valproate (VPA) therapy in order to determine whether there was any effect of VPA therapy on these hormones. The study included 31 patients with epilepsy receiving VPA and 22 healthy age-matched controls. The age ranged from 15 months to 16 years and 18 months to 17 years in the study and control group, respectively.

Brucellosis which is a zoonotic infection involving many systems, is widespread in Turkey. Although muscular and skeletal system involvements are common, genitourinary system complications (epididymo-orchitis) are observed rarely. Brucellosis accompanied by abscess formation in the vertebra is generally seen in the elderly and patients with chronic diseases, while epididymo-orchitis in young patients.

In this study, between the period of September 2000 to July 2001, hepatitis A virus (HAV) IgG antibodies and hepatitis E virus (HEV) total (IgG + IgM) antibodies have been searched by using commercially provided enzyme immunoassay kits (Axsym, Abbott USA), in 1046 adults aged between 15-75 years old (mean age: 32.3 years), who were admitted to the outpatient clinics of Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases Department of Ankara University Medical School, with no acute hepatitis signs and symptoms. As a result, anti-HAV and anti-HEV seropositivities were detected in 914 (87.

Fungal opportunistic infections, and in particular those caused by the various Candida species, have gained considerable significance as a cause of morbidity and, often, mortality. Although Candida albicans remains to be the most frequently isolated fungal species as an opportunistic oral pathogen, other yeast species are often identified in immunocompromised patients. C.

Spontaneous esophageal perforation is an uncommon finding requiring prompt diagnosis and immediate surgery because of its high mortality rate. Esophageal rupture secondary to severe vomiting in pregnancy is extremely rare and only four cases have been published in the literature. We report the case of a 20-year-old female in whom severe vomiting in early pregnancy resulted in esophageal perforation with subcutaneous emphysema.

Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome (MRS) is characterized by the triad of recurrent facial palsy, lingua plicata, and facial edema. Herein, we report a case of MRS associated with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome due to rare presentation. To the best of our knowledge only one case of MRS associated with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome has been reported in the literature until now.

Determination of dansyl (AG-DNS) and fluorescamine (AG-F) derivatives of rac-aminoglutethimide in tablet formulation by HPLC has been achieved on a cellulose tris-(3,5-dimethylphenyl carbamate), known as Chiralcel OD and OD-R under normal and reversed phase columns, respectively, using a fluorescence detector (lambda(ex), 360 nm; lambda(em), 530 nm for AG-DNS derivatives; lambda(ex), 395 nm, lambda(em), 495 nm for fluorescamine derivatives (AG-F)). The best results were obtained with mobile phase ethanol:cyclohexane:methanol (95:5:2 v/v/v) for AG-DNS derivatives and acetonitrile:0.5% ortho-phosphoric acid (85:15 v/v) containing 0.

An analysis of seven infants with Brachmann-de Lange syndrome, of whom two identical twin sisters: Brachmann-de Lange syndrome (BDLS) is characterized by typical facial features, intrauterine growth retardation, short stature, microbrachycephaly, hirsutism and limb anomalies. Here, we reviewed the findings of seven infants with BDLS, of whom two were identical twin sisters of normal parents. All of the infants' parents were normal, and no consanguinity between the parents was noted although the ratio of consanguineous marriages is very high (21.
