The Fogarty catheter is an invaluable tool in the surgical practice of a vascular surgeon. Arteriovenous fistula is an unusual but potentially dangerous complication of its use. We present the case of a man who suffered a peroneal arteriovenous fistula as a result of an above-knee femoropopliteal polytetrafluorethylene graft thrombectomy.

The expedition to Peru and Chile (1777-1788): inventory of scientific production.

The aim of this work is to provide an inventory of the scientific corpus produced by the Spanish members of the Expedition to Peru and Chile (1777-1788). This material is divided into six large sections. The first section covers the different versions of the diary of the journey taken by the Expedition.

Fungal infections in neutropenic patients. A 8-year prospective study.

In this paper we report a eight-year prospective study designed to further characterize incidence, epidemiology, specific syndromes, treatment and prognosis associated with fungal infections in neutropenic patients. During the study period 30 fungal infections were diagnosed in 30 patients among 313 episodes of fever and neutropenia (10%). There were 15 cases of candidiasis, 5 pulmonary aspergillosis, 3 sinusitis by Aspergillus fumigatus, 5 infections by Fusarium sp.

[Knowledge of the nursing consultation in primary health care].

Objective: To find how much is known about the nursing surgeries in our health district. To compare the level of knowledge/use between the population covered and those with medical records.

Sclerosteosis in a Spanish male: first report in a person of Mediterranean origin.

We report the first observation of sclerosteosis in Spain. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of sclerosteosis in a person of Mediterranean origin with no known Dutch ancestors. He has the characteristic phenotype of the disease with right facial nerve palsy and syndactyly and the typical radiological features, including generalised bone sclerosis and cortical widening of the tubular bones.

Quinolone prophylaxis in neutropenic patients - efficacy versus resistance.

To assess the efficacy of quinolones in the prophylaxis of infections in neutropenic patients with acute non-lymphocytic leukemia, and to evaluate the emergence of quinolone resistance in two University Hospitals in Brazil, we retrospectively compared 101 consecutive episodes of neutropenia managed with quinolone prophylaxis between 1989 and November 1993, and 26 previous episodes without prophylaxis, and reviewed the results of in vitro sensitivity of Gram-negative strains to quinolones in the same period. Prophylaxis with quinolones resulted in less episodes of bacteremias (21% vs. 69%, p=10(-7)), including Gram-negative bacteremias (6% vs.

The nmt1+ gene of the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe is subject to transcriptional repression mediated by thiamine. The promoter of nmt1+ has been used to construct a series of vectors that are now commonly used for the regulated expression of genes in S. pombe.

HIV-transmission knowledge in drug users from outpatient facilities in Spain. A national survey.

Knowledge of AIDS and its transmission was studied in patients undergoing drug-dependence treatment for opiates and/or cocaine. The study area included all of Spain and was carried out via a questionnaire assessing information about risk practices, HIV serostatus, etc, and 13 true or false questions concerning HIV-transmission knowledge. The main purpose of the present study was to analyse the relationship between the level of information found in patients and factors potentially related to it, including the practice of high-risk activities for HIV transmission, the sources of information and behaviour modification.

DNA content in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Comparison between flow cytometry and cytogenetics in fresh and paraffin-embedded tissue.

DNA content of 36-non-Hodgkin's lymphomas was analyzed by flow cytometry (FCM) and cytogenetics (CG), 21 in fresh and 15 in paraffin-embedded tissue. The results of both techniques were coincident in 60% of the fresh tissue samples and in 45% of the paraffin-embedded ones, the reason for this difference could be the poor resolution of DNA histograms from paraffin-embedded tissue. All samples judged as aneuploid by FCM were aneuploid also by CG.

[Biology of secondary nodal follicular b-lymphomas. A patho-dynamic study].

Purpose: To assess the aggressivity factors and tumour prognosis in a series of non-Hodgkin lymphomas by the use of computer-quantified specific antibodies and flow cytometry.

Patients And Methods: Sixty-one cases of follicular B-cell lymphoma: 34 of the germinal centre (24 centroblastic-centrocytic, CB-CC, and 10 centroblastic, CC) and 27 of the follicular cortex (FCL), were studied. All the cases had been diagnosed between 1971 and 1992 at the Pathology Department of the Fundación Jiménez Díaz.

Cyclin B interacts with Cdc2 kinase to induce cell cycle events, particularly those of mitosis. The existence of cyclin B subtypes in several species has been known for some time, leading to speculation that key events of mitosis may be carried out by distinct functional classes of Cdc2/cyclin B. We report the discovery of cig2, a third B-type cyclin gene in Schizosaccharomyces pombe.

[Chagas disease--review of 8 simultaneous cases of acute Chagas myocarditis: 25 years later].

Purpose: To analyse the evolution of 8 cases of Chagas' disease after a microepidemy of 17 cases which occurred in Teotonia-RS-in 1965 and to discuss the importance of oral contamination in Chagas' disease.

Methods: All 8 patients are followed at the IC/FUC-RS-Brazil since 1980. Clinical examinations, blood tests, ECG, Cx-Ray and Echo were made in 1991.

Femoral bone remodeling: clinical experience with cemented and cementless total hip arthroplasty.

A radiographic study of femoral bone tissue remodeling around hip arthroplasty was carried out simultaneously in two series totalling 224 cementless and 77 cemented prostheses. Remodeling was analyzed by detailed visual evaluation of the radiographic assessment. The results show that the phenomenon of bone remodeling is still evolving more than 5 years after surgery.

Frequencies of chromosomal aberrations in rodents collected in the coal-field and tobacco culture region of Criciúma, south Brazil.

The present work has been accomplished in the basin of the Sangão River (Criciúma, South Brazil), which receives the rejects from coal washing, mainly heavy metals. In the tobacco cultures at the river banks several agrotoxics are used. We tried to detect and estimate the possible action of this environmental pollution on rodents directly exposed to it through the study of chromosome aberration frequency in the bone marrow.

Dual functions of CDC6: a yeast protein required for DNA replication also inhibits nuclear division.

The Saccharomyces cerevisiae gene CDC6, whose protein product is required for DNA replication, is transcribed only in late G1 and S phases. We have discovered a critical reason why CDC6 expression is regulated in this fashion. Constitutive CDC6 transcription greatly delayed the initiation of M phase without effecting the G1-S transition or growth rate.

False aneurysms of the circumflex arteries of the femur as a complication of hip arthroplasty: description of one case.

A fission yeast B-type cyclin functioning early in the cell cycle.

We have cloned a fission yeast gene, cig1+, encoding a 48 kd product that is most similar to cyclin B proteins. The cig1+ protein has a "cyclin box" approximately 40% identical to B-type cyclins of other species, but lacks the "destruction box" required for proteolysis of mitotic cyclins. Deletion of cig1+ had no observable effect on cell viability or progression through G2 or M phase, but instead caused a marked lag in the progression from G1 to S phase.

An evaluation of the "quoad vitam" prognosis in the elderly patient with medial fracture of the femoral neck.

The authors analyzed 425 consecutive cases of medial fracture of the femoral neck with the purpose of establishing a simple and practical system, and one which is easy to use, in order to evaluate this type of lesion and to compare different series of cases. Based on these criteria the death rate occurring intra-hospital and 6 months after trauma, the influence of the age factor, the type of anesthesia used and the type of treatment carried out, were evaluated. The results were as follows: The classification devised by the American Society of Anesthesiology continues to be an effective system for the evaluation of vital risk.

The role of adhesivity as a factor of virulence in cases of N. meningitidis has not yet been established. Effects of perinatal hypothyroidism in the carbohydrate composition of cochlear tectorial membrane.

The presence of carbohydrates in the cochlear tectorial membrane (TM) of normal and hypothyroid rats was analyzed using fluorescent lectin probes. SBA and WGA lectins exhibited a similar reactivity in both normal and hypothyroid TMs. DBA, RCA1, UEA1 and Con A lectins were also reactive, although they showed a different distribution pattern between normal and hypothyroid TMs.
