Background: Prehospital point-of-care ultrasound allows an unstable patient to be rapidly and accurately assessed. However, we are concerned that an excessive focus on the ultrasound device, in an already demanding emergency medical service environment, may distract from patient care, potentially leading to reduced situational awareness and the neglect of other crucial instruments, such as the patient monitor. Thus, in this study, we examined the influence of prehospital ultrasound on situational awareness, by studying the degree to which physicians were distracted from the patient monitor.

Normothermic ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) can resuscitate marginal lung allografts to increase organs available for transplantation. During normothermic perfusion, cellular metabolism is more active compared with subnormothermic perfusion, creating a need for an oxygen (O 2 ) carrier in the perfusate. As an O 2 carrier, red blood cells (RBCs) are a scarce resource and are susceptible to hemolysis in perfusion circuits, thus releasing cell-free hemoglobin (Hb), which can extravasate into the tissue space, thus promoting scavenging of nitric oxide (NO) and oxidative tissue damage.

Glycophorin A (GPA), a red blood cell (RBC) surface glycoprotein, can maintain peripheral blood leukocyte quiescence through interaction with a sialic acid-binding Ig-like lectin (Siglec-9). Microinfusions are commonly used for the administration of catecholamines, but start-up delays pose a problem for reliable and timely drug delivery. Recent findings show that venting of the syringe infusion pump with draining of fluid to ambient pressure before directing the flow towards the central venous catheter does not counteract start-up delays. Background And Objectives: COVID-19-associated coagulopathy, shown to increase the risk for the occurrence of thromboses and microthromboses, displays phenotypic features of the antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), a prototype antibody-mediated autoimmune disease. Several groups have reported elevated levels of criteria and non-criteria antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL), assumed to cause APS, during acute or post-acute COVID-19. Polymerized human hemoglobin (PolyhHb) has shown promise in preclinical hemorrhagic shock settings. Different synthetic and purification schemes can control the size of PolyhHbs, yet research is lacking on the impact of polymerized hemoglobin size on tissue oxygenation following hemorrhage and resuscitation in specialized animal models that challenge their resuscitative capabilities. Pre-existing conditions that compromise the vasculature and end organs, such as the liver, may limit the effectiveness of resuscitation and exacerbate the toxicity of these molecules, which is an important but minimally explored therapeutic dimension.

Background: The face is commonly affected in thermal injuries, with a demand for proper recognition and the correct choice of treatment to guarantee optimal aesthetic and functional outcomes. It is highly vascularized and often heals conservatively, highlighting the particular relevance of conservative treatment modalities, many of which require daily re-applications or dressing changes, which can be painful and tedious for both the patient and the healthcare providers.
