Background: The VentrAssist (VA) is a novel, continuous flow left ventricular assist device (LVAD). The purpose of this trial was to investigate the safety and efficacy of the VA in elderly patients with end-stage heart failure.
Methods: In this prospective trial, patients requiring circulatory support either as destination therapy (DT) or as a bridge to transplant (BTT) were implanted with a VA device.
Telecare services use information and communications technology (ICT) to support the provision of care to people in their own homes. This paper describes a pilot telecare service employed by Liverpool (UK) City Council to support a sample of their frail and elderly social services users. The pilot has been running for over two years and has been deployed for 21 individuals in Liverpool.

Dendritic cells are key regulators of the immune response, and are capable of inducing hyporesponsiveness and regulatory activity in CD4+ T-cells. We have demonstrated that aspirin-treated dendritic cells are effective at antigen processing and presentation, and possess a unique potency for inducing regulatory activity in responder T-cells.

The first human implant was into a 72-year-old man with New York Heart Association (NYHA) class IV heart failure due to idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy. The implant and recovery were uneventful, and the patient survives at 17 months, is NYHA class II, and lives at home.
