In the United States, sampling women of reproductive age from the general population for research purposes is a challenge. Even more difficult is conducting a population-based study of couples attempting pregnancy to assess fecundity and fertility or related impairments. To address the problem of obtaining representative samples from the population in order to study such health-related issues, a commercially and readily available CD-ROM telephone directory was used and tested as a sampling framework for studies aimed at enrolling gravid women aged 18-44 years.

On one hand, fish is a good source of protein, low in fat and a rich source of other nutrients all of which have presumably beneficial effects on developing embryos and fetuses. On the other hand, consumption of fish contaminated with environmental toxicants such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) has been associated with decrements in gestation and birth size.

Recent studies have shown suggestive evidence that hand and knee OA are linked with the interleukin-1 (IL-1) region on human chromosome 2q. This study was undertaken to assess the association of primary OA of the hand (hand OA) with IL-1 region markers.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFTrypanosoma cruzi is thought to undergo predominant clonal evolution, as determined by population genetics studies. However, this model does not exclude occasional recombination, which existence is strongly suggested by several recent studies. We sequenced a portion of the maxicircle cytochrome b (CYb) gene and of the nuclear rRNA promoter region from representative strains of six T.

Methods: Using data from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, this study sample was restricted to 1623 girls aged 8 to 16 years (466 non-Hispanic white, 589 non-Hispanic black, and 568 Mexican American) for whom information was available on Tanner stages of pubic hair and breast development. Subsequently, the sample was restricted to 1168 girls aged 10 to 16 years (330 non-Hispanic white, 419 non-Hispanic black, and 419 Mexican American) for whom menarche data were available.

Consumption of PCB-contaminated sport fish from Lake Ontario has been reported to be associated with diminished female fecundity. To identify Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners and other pesticides that might be associated with reduced fecundity, we followed 102 women aged 20-34 years attempting pregnancy who completed daily diaries for 12 at risk menstrual cycles. Fecundity referred to time-to-pregnancy (TTP) or the number of at risk menstrual cycles required for pregnancy.

More recently, molecular techniques and shell vials with a mixture of human colon carcinoma and genetically engineered buffalo green monkey kidney cells (BGMK cells) (Super E-Mix) have been described.
Objective: We compared the results of this new cell culture technique with two reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) techniques and conventional cell culture to assess the accuracy of these various methods.
The development of ASM2 has created a complex model for biological phosphorus removal. Most of the published work on calibrating this model has focused on the design of experiments to maximise information with which to calibrate the model, or the use of hourly data collected around and within an aeration tank. But many sewage works do not collect such data, nor have such instrumentation.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFFetal deaths comprise a large component of perinatal mortality and remain an understudied pregnancy outcome, especially from a population perspective. Interpretation of the findings from clinical or community-based studies can be difficult without a clear understanding of fetal death at the population level. This article addresses the critical data gaps underlying population-based research on fetal deaths, including the magnitude and scope of the problem, the probability of occurrence, the populations at risk, and the importance of accounting for prior reproductive history.

These akinetoplastic stocks were compared with one another, to three Old World (Ethiopia, China and Philippines) dyskinetoplastic stocks of T. evansi, and also with Trypanosoma equiperdum, Trypanosoma brucei brucei, Trypanosoma brucei gambiense and Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense.

This is the first evidence based on DNA sequences of close-relatedness between Brazilian and West African T.

Subjects And Methods: Forty singleton pregnancies, 30 affected by alloimmunization and 10 by intrauterine parvovirus B19 infection, were referred to our tertiary center between 1998 and 2000. All cases underwent Doppler measurement of the MCA PSV immediately before fetal blood sampling and just before and after intrauterine transfusion.

Biologic capacity for reproduction, or fecundity, may be threatened by environmental contaminants, especially compounds capable of disrupting endocrine pathways. Telephone interviews that focused on reproductive events were conducted with female members of the New York State Angler Cohort Study who became pregnant between 1991 and 1993 and who reported known time to pregnancy (N = 895; 73%). Consumption of polychlorinated biphenyl-contaminated Lake Ontario sportfish and other factors were ascertained in 1991.

This study measures the association between health insurance and the likelihood of receiving different obstetrical anesthesia protocols among 121,351 singleton live births in upstate New York during 1992. Mothers receiving a cesarean under Medicaid were approximately twice as likely to receive general anesthesia as those with traditional private coverage. Those receiving a cesarean under an HMO were least likely to receive general anesthesia with adjusted odds of 0.

A number of studies have pointed out the potential importance of the household in the transmission of schistosomiasis. The clustering of domestic activities associated with water collection, storage, and usage can result in the sharing of transmission sites and infective water contact behaviours. In this study, we employed a variance component method to estimate effects due to individual risk factors and shared residence on the variance in faecal egg counts during Schistosoma mansoni infection.

Using a case-control design, cases included 155 infants and children aged 0-5 years with histologically confirmed neuroblastoma diagnosed and reported to the New York State Cancer Registry between 1976 and 1987. Controls were randomly selected from the State's Livebirth Registry and were frequency matched to cases on year of birth (n = 310).

Design: A set of three review papers was identified, and the ideas represented by the authors of those papers were extracted. The 161 articles referenced in those three reviews were then analyzed using 1) a formalized data extraction approach, which uses a protocol-driven manual process to extract the variables, values, and statistical significance of the stated relationships; and 2) a computerized approach known as "Idea Analysis," which uses the abstracts of the original articles and processes them through a computer software program that reads the abstracts and organizes the ideas presented by the authors.
The ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene promoter was used to construct plasmid vectors that simultaneously express multiple exogenous genes in Trypanosoma cruzi. Vector pBSPANEO expresses neomycin phosphotransferase, and pPAGFPAN expresses both green fluorescent protein and neomycin phosphotransferase from a single promoter. Both vectors require the presence of the rRNA promoter for stable transfection; epimastigotes transfected with pPAGFPAN strongly fluoresced due to green fluorescent protein expression.

Although trans-splicing resembles cis-splicing in many ways and most of the U RNA participants have been characterized, relatively few involved proteins have been identified. Herein, we employed a yeast three-hybrid system to identify a protein, XB1, which binds to the Trypanosoma cruzi SL RNA.
