The ability to use complex tools is thought to depend on multifaceted motor-to-mechanical transformations within the left inferior parietal lobule (IPL), linked to cognitive control over compound actions. Here we show using neuroimaging that demanding transformations of finger movements into proper mechanical movements of functional parts of complex tools invoke significantly the right rather than left rostral IPL, and bilateral posterior-to-mid and left anterior intraparietal sulci. While Liepmann was one of the first researchers to consider a relationship between skilled manual actions (praxis) and language for tasks performed "freely from memory", his primary focus was on the relations between the organization of praxis and left-hemisphere dominance. Subsequent attempts to apply his apraxia model to all cases he studied - including his first patient, a "non-pure right-hander" treated as an exception - left the praxis-handedness issue unresolved. Modern neuropsychological and recent neuroimaging evidence either showed closer associations of praxis and language, than between handedness and any of these two functions, or focused on their dissociations.

Insulating SrTiO3 (STO) can host 2D electron systems (2DESs) on its surfaces, caused by oxygen defects. This study shows that the STO surface exhibits phase separation once the 2DES is formed and relates this inhomogeneity to recently reported magnetic order at STO surfaces and interfaces. The chromosomal translocation products AML1-ETO and PML-RARalpha contribute to the pathogenesis of leukemias. Here, we demonstrate that both AML1-ETO and PML-RARalpha are degraded by the ubiquitin-proteasome system and that their turnover critically depends on the E2-conjugase UbcH8 and the E3-ligase SIAH-1.
