The study aims to investigate the last 20-year (2000-2019) of hospital length of stay (LOS) trends and their association with different healthcare systems (HS) among 25 European countries. A panel dataset was created using secondary data from Eurostat and Global Burden of Disease study databases, with dependent and control variables aggregated at the national level over a period of 20 years. Accurately estimating and predicting chronological age from some anthropometric characteristics of an individual without an identity document can be crucial in the context of a growing number of forced migrants. In the related literature, the prediction of chronological age mostly relies upon the use of a single predictor, which is usually represented by a dental/skeletal maturity index, or multiple independent ordinal predictor (stage of maturation). This paper is the first attempt to combine a robust method to predict chronological age, such as Bayesian calibration, and the use of multiple continuous indices as predictors.

Functional membrane proteins in the plasma membrane are suggested to have specific membrane environments that play important roles to maintain and regulate their function. However, the local membrane environments of membrane proteins remain largely unexplored due to the lack of available techniques. We have developed a method to probe the local membrane environment surrounding membrane proteins in the plasma membrane by covalently tethering a solvatochromic, environment-sensitive dye, Nile Red, to a GPI-anchored protein and the insulin receptor through a flexible linker.

Metal oxides and oxyhydroxides exhibit state-of-the-art activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER); however, their reaction mechanism, particularly the relationship between charging of the oxide and OER kinetics, remains elusive. Here, we investigate a series of Mn-, Co-, Fe-, and Zn-doped nickel oxides using UV-vis spectroscopy coupled with time-resolved stepped potential spectroelectrochemistry. The Ni/Ni redox peak potential is found to shift anodically from Mn- < Co- < Fe- < Zn-doped samples, suggesting a decrease in oxygen binding energetics from Mn- to Zn-doped samples.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic varied significantly across different countries, with important consequences in the definition of control and response strategies. In this work, to investigate the heterogeneity of this crisis, we analyse the spatial patterns of deaths attributed to COVID-19 in several European countries.
