Changes in coastal ecosystems affected by overburden dumping from amber open-cut mining on the Sambia Peninsula (Baltic Sea).

The Sambia Peninsula (Kaliningrad region) is historically well known for its amber mining. The 2019 year was the last year of direct overburden disposal into the Baltic Sea as a part of technological amber mining process. The extremely high-suspended particulate matter concentrations during that disposal were recorded immediately after the discharge of significant volumes of pulp and reached 200 mg/L.

[Behcet's disease with neurologic manifestations].

Behcet's disease (BD) is a type of systematic chronic inflammatory disease of unknown etiology that is characterized by the combination of recurrent oral aphthous, genital ulcers and uveitis. A damage of the nervous system is observed in 3-9% of patients, in which two variants of the course of the disease are possible: parenchymal in the form of immune-mediated meningoencephalitis, and non-parenchymal, which can be represented by venous sinus thrombosis, intracranial arterial aneurysms and intracranial hypertension. The article presents a clinical case of BD with a dominant nervous system damage in the clinical presentations of the disease.

Morphological, cultural and physiological characteristics of 19 Helminthosporium-like hyphomycetes isolated from the White Sea were studied. Taxonomic status of the isolates was verified using molecular genetics techniques. One of the isolates was identified as Alternatia sp.

Among the medical social and economic problems having important universal public significance, a particular place belongs to the issues of the disability and the organization of care of persons with limited physical and mental possibilities. The Nijhny Novgorod oblast experience of work with the handicapped persons demonstrates that in the large-scale industrial region the level of disability is rather high with the neatly marked tendency to increase. The need for the professional education and further employment assistance is quite meaningful among the handicapped persons of able-bodied age.

[Work with public in foci of infection during outbreaks of pneumonia caused by Legionella in town Verkhnyaya Pyshma in July-August 2007].

One of the key elements in epidemiologic control for infectious diseases is timely and active identification of contacts, which results in in-time hospitalization of patients that are needed it and allows to conduct educational work with the public. Measures for outpatient medical and preventive help in Legionella infection which were developed on the experience of termination of outbreak of pneumonia caused by Legionella in town Verkhnyaya Pyshma in July-August, 2007 are presented.

[Organization of work with nursing staff in Central City Hospital of Verkhnyaya Pyshma town during mass hospitalization of patients with pneumonia caused by Legionella].

Data on organization and carrying out of preventive and antiepidemic measures in hospital during hospitalization of more than 197 patients with Pontiac fever and pneumonia caused by Legionella were presented. Directions and formats of work with medical personnel, including those invited from other medical institutions, as well as their information support were determined. Optimal choice of organizational, and educational technologies, as well as ways to control of compliance with implemented measures by the staff allowed to prevent cases of nosocomial infections in patients and medical personnel.

[Organization of medical care of patients with pneumonia caused by Legionella during outbreak in Sverdlovsk region].

Data on organization of medical care during outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in July-August, 2007 in town Verkhnyaya Pyshma in Sverdlovsk region are presented. Special feature of this outbreak was spreading of infection in boundaries of the town with total population of 70,600 people. Results of organizational work of health authorities in order to provide timely and adequate medical care for patients with Legionnaires' disease on both outpatient and inpatient levels of care, conduction of preventive measures in foci of infection, coordination of interaction between different medical organizations and services are summarized in the article.

[Roentgenological picture of pneumonia caused by Legionella: on the materials of outbreak in town Verkhnyaya Pyshma].

Analysis of experience in sharing of information between medical care organization service and services ensuring sanitary-epidemiological welfare of population during outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in town Verkhnyaya Pyshma in July-August 2007 was performed in the article.

[Organization of preventive and antiepidemic measures in conditions of massive outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in population of town Verkhnyaya Pyshma. Epidemiologist's work experience in ensuring biosafety].

Data on organization and carrying out of preventive and antiepidemic measures in hospital during mass hospitalization (> 190 cases) of patients with community-acquired pneumonia caused by Legionella pneumophila are presented. Experience of physicians-epidemiologists in determination of directions of work in hospital, procedures of interaction, extent and description of biosafety measures in order to prevent nosocomial spread of infection to patients and staff are described.

[Experience of microbiologic diagnostics of acute pneumonia cases arose in town Verkhnyaya Pyshma in July-August 2007].

Bacteriologic, serologic, and PCR tests of blood, sputum, serum and autopsy samples from 91 patients were performed during outbreak of pneumonia in town Verkhnyaya Pyshma in July-August 2007. Streptococcus pneumoniae was isolated from 20% of diagnostically meaningful samples of sputum and from 50% of autopsy samples. Diagnosis of Legionnaires' disease was confirmed in 48% of cases.

Tumour tissue is a source of gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase sialoform in the sera of melanoma-bearing mice.

The total serum activity of gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) was shown to increase with the growth of transplantable B16 and S91 melanomas in inbred mice. In an effort to define the source of the GGT shed into the bloodstream the physicochemical characteristics of the partially purified GGT isoforms from liver, serum and B16 melanoma were compared. The molecular weights of the serum and melanoma isoforms were identical (86 kDa) and differed from that of the liver isoform (69 kDa).

Markers of melanogenesis in malignant melanoma.

Biochemical specifity of malignant melanoma is represented in part by the formation of specific cytoplasmatic particles of the pigment cell--melanosomes--in which the synthesis of pigment eumelanin and pheomelanin takes place and in part by the presence of a specific enzyme--tyrosinase--which catalyzes the formation of pigment eumelanin and pheomelanin and even the formation of specific metabolites (so called melanogens) which are excreted in increased amounts in the course of the disease. Tyrosinase and melanogens are specific for pigment cell and therefore can be used for monitoring of melanogenesis in malignant melanoma. When comparing our results and the results of other authors we can conclude that following of specific markers of melanogenesis in malignant melanoma should serve for the evaluation of prognosis of the disease.

The authors elaborated a modified synthesis technique of 6-hydroxy-5-methoxy and 5-hydroxy-6-methoxyindole, eumelanin pigment precursors. The elaborated synthesis is economically and temporally reasonable and the synthesized compounds accord, as proved by means of elementary analysis, thin layer (TLC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and last but not least by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), with demands for reference compounds needed for isomer hydroxymethoxyindole quantification in urine.

5-Hydroxy-6-methoxy-2-indolylcarboxylic and 6-hydroxy-5-methoxy-2-indolylcarboxylic acids in the urine of hamsters with melanotic melanoma.

The isomeric metabolites, 5-hydroxy-6-methoxy-2-indolylcarboxylic and 6-hydroxy-5-methoxy-2-indolylcarboxylic acids have been identified in the urine of hamsters bearing transplantable melanotic melanoma. Their identification was carried out by spectral and chromatographic comparison of the two isomers isolated from urine with the same compounds achieved synthetically.
