Age-related endothelial dysfunction is a pivotal factor in the development of cardiovascular diseases, stemming, at least in part, from mitochondrial dysfunction and a consequential increase in oxidative stress. These alterations are central to the decline in vascular health seen with aging, underscoring the urgent need for interventions capable of restoring endothelial function for preventing cardiovascular diseases. Dietary interventions, notably time-restricted feeding (TRF), have been identified for their anti-aging effects on mitochondria, offering protection against age-associated declines in skeletal muscle and other organs.

Experimental approaches such as Heterochronic Plasma Transfer (HPT) provide insights into the aging process and help identify the factors that impact aging, with the aim of developing anti-aging therapies. HPT involves the transfer of plasma from an animal of one age to an animal of a different age and highlights the effects of the systemic environment on aging. Despite its importance as an aging research tool, HPT is not without limitations and HPT experiments across various studies differ in key experimental designs considerations, presenting a challenge in obtaining comparable outcomes.

New Findings: What is the central question of this study? Do Notch, Numb and Numb-like expression change in human skeletal muscle after exercise-induced muscle damage? What are the main finding and its importance? Notch gene expression trends toward an increase in response to an acute bout of exercise-induced muscle damage, while Numb and Numb-like expression does not change. These results suggest that human skeletal muscle response to exercise-induced muscle damage is dynamic and may differ from Drosophila and rodent models. Furthermore, the timing of muscle biopsies, training status and muscle damage protocols should be considered.

The antidiabetic medication metformin has been proposed to be the first drug tested to target aging and extend healthspan in humans. While there is extensive epidemiological support for the health benefits of metformin in patient populations, it is not clear if these protective effects apply to those free of age-related disease. Our previous data in older adults without diabetes suggest a dichotomous change in insulin sensitivity and skeletal muscle mitochondrial adaptations after metformin treatment when co-prescribed with exercise.

The goal of this paper is to present a dedicated high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure which is used in the development of a so-called reduced-order model (ROM) for simulating the outcomes of interventional procedures which are contemplated in the treatment of valvular heart conditions. Following a brief introduction to the problem, the paper presents the design of a model execution environment, in which representative cases can be simulated and the parameters of the ROM fine-tuned to enable subsequent deployment of a decision support system without further need for HPC. The presentation of the system is followed by information concerning its use in processing specific patient cases in the context of the EurValve international collaboration.

Creating a European Health Research and Innovation Cloud (HRIC) within this environment should enable data sharing and analysis for health research across the EU, in compliance with data protection legislation while preserving the full trust of the participants. Irisin is involved in stimulating adipose tissue to become more metabolically active in order to produce heat. Introduction: Allergic rhinitis (AR) impacts around 25% of the worldwide population. However, cost, safety, and a high dissatisfaction rate with numerous conventional medications continues to be an issue in the largest patient surveys, due primarily to a lack of efficacy on nasal congestion. Our previously published randomized trial demonstrated a significant reduction in cold and flu-like symptoms, and a secondary potential observation of a decrease in nasal congestion with an oral yeast-derived compound; therefore, the objective of this study was to test the effects of this same product on nasal congestion and other notable AR symptoms.

In order to perform clinical investigations on integrated biomedical data sets and to predict virological and epidemiological outcome, medical experts require an IT-based collaborative environment that provides them a user-friendly space for building and executing their complex studies and workflows on largely available and high-quality data repositories. In this paper, the authors introduce such a novel collaborative working environment a so-called virtual laboratory for clinicians and medical researchers, which allows users to interactively access and browse several biomedical research databases and re-use relevant data sets within own designed experiments.
