Background: Post-transplantation cyclophosphamide (PTCy) and anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG) are common prophylactic strategies for graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) after haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (haplo-HSCT). Interleukin (IL)-6 is a surrogate marker for cytokine release syndrome (CRS) and acute GVHD.

Method: The clinical outcomes and complications of haplo-HSCT with PTCy plus ATG versus PTCy monotherapy were compared according to serum IL-6 levels at Chungnam National University Hospital (Daejeon, South Korea) from January 2019 to February 2023.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is an aggressive malignancy characterized by rapid growth and uncontrolled proliferation of undifferentiated myeloid cells. Metabolic reprogramming is commonly observed in the bone marrow of AML patients, as leukemia cells require increased ATP supply to support disease progression. In this study, we examined the potential role of mesothelin as a metabolic modulator in myeloid cells in AML.

Autoimmune limbic encephalitis (LE) is a rare, but devastating complication of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). There is currently limited evidence describing the risk factors, laboratory features, and underlying mechanisms of this neurologic adverse event. We retrospectively reviewed available clinical, imaging, and laboratory data from adult patients with hematological malignancies who underwent haploidentical HSCT with post-transplant cyclophosphamide (PTCy) at Chungnam National University Hospital from June 2016 to May 2020.

Article Synopsis
  • Fucoidan, a compound from brown seaweed, shows promise in treating viral infections, but the specifics of how it works are still being studied.
  • Research using RNA-Seq on bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (BMDCs) revealed that fucoidan enhances pathways related to viral responses and type I interferon production, particularly in response to viruses like SARS-CoV-2.
  • The study also found that fucoidan boosts markers associated with effective immune function in BMDCs, implying its role in activating antiviral responses and improving immune system readiness.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common autoimmune disease characterized by immune cell infiltration of the synovium, leading to the loss of cartilage, bone, and joint function. Although regulatory T (T) cells are thought to modulate the initiation and progression of RA, a consensus has yet to be reached regarding the function and composition of T cells in RA patients. To address these discrepancies, we analyzed not only the total T frequency but also that of T subpopulations in the peripheral blood of RA patients and healthy controls by flow cytometry.

Objectives: Changes in fecal microbiota affect the incidence and extent of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Most patients with hematological malignancies receive antibiotics for the treatment of febrile neutropenia prior to allogeneic HSCT, and pre-transplant use of antibiotics may influence the fecal microbiota and GVHD.

Methods: We retrospectively analysed consecutive adult patients with hematological malignancies who received allogeneic HSCT at Chungnam National University Hospital between 2007 and 2018.

Microbial adhesion is critical for parasitic infection and colonization of host cells. To study the host-parasite interaction in vitro, we established a flow cytometry-based assay to measure the adherence of to epithelial cell line SiHa. SiHa cells and were detected as clearly separated, quantifiable populations by flow cytometry.
