The Impact of Informal Social Support on Older Health: Evidence from China.

Objectives: To explore the impact of informal social support (ISS) on older health.

Methods: Multiple regression was used as the baseline regression, grouping regression was used to examine whether there were health effect differences among groups based on age and household registration, and insurance was selected to explore moderating effects of formal social support (FSS).

Results: First, economic support, accompanied support, and number of intimate contacts had significantly positive effects on older health except for care support's negative effects.

Mobility-related inequality in healthcare utilization between floating and native populations and its influencing factors: evidence from China.

Our goal was to examine inequality in healthcare utilization and the factors that contribute to inequality between China's floating and native populations. Based on the China Labor-force Dynamics Surveys from 2014 to 2018, which used three rounds of data, we utilized a panel probit model that included fixed effects for time and province to estimate the probability of healthcare utilization for floating and native populations. In addition, we calculated the degree of inequality in healthcare utilization by using the method of mobility-related inequality and a decomposition approach was used to explain the contribution of each factor to the inequality.

Will high-speed railway influence the healthcare seeking behaviour of patients? Quasi-experimental evidence from China.

This study examines the impacts of high-speed railway (HSR) transportation on the healthcare-seeking behaviour of patients along newly integrated areas of Sichuan province, China. The opening of the Cheng-Mian-Le intercity HSR is considered as quasi-experimental evidence from China, and we make a propensity score matching the difference in differences research design, using data from the monthly report database of the Sichuan Province health statistical data collection and Decision Support System from 2014 to 2015. We find that, first, the opening of the HSR resulted in significant healthcare-seeking behaviour with great heterogeneity.

Determination of trends in diet-related behaviors and their interactions with cardio-metabolic diseases is an important research endeavor. We analyzed food categories, weight, eating frequency, eating location, cooking methods, time of food intake, dietary knowledge, food preference, nutritional structure over time, and their interaction with cardiometabolic risks, using t tests and χ² tests, based on the China Health and Nutrition Survey packages from 1997 to 2011. Consumption of fruits, dairy products, snacks, fast food, and beverages has increased significantly, as a concomitant and marked decrease in rice consumption has occurred.

We studied the effect of mothers' dietary patterns on their children's nutritional status. Based on the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) packages in 2004, 2006, 2009, and 2011, mothers' dietary quality scores were calculated using the Dietary Balance Index-07. We further explored the influence of maternal dietary patterns on children's nutritional status using a series of regression analyses with time and province fixed effects in longitudinal study, simultaneouly considering the differential impact of child's age, multigenerational co-residence, and categories of maternal food consumption.

Differences in Overweight and Obesity between the North and South of China.

Determining geographical distribution and local dietary patterns involved in being obese is useful for designing intervention strategies. We selected residents between 18 and 65 years old from 11 Chinese provinces to compare dietary patterns and BMI from the China Health and Nutrition Survey packages in 2011. We used linear and logistic regression analyses to assess the strength of association among geographic variables, the obesity problem, and dietary patterns.

Background: It is believed that parents have a great influence on their children's dietary behaviours. However, it is not clear whether parental food patterns are associated with children's nutritional status in China, which includes a vast territory with rich, diverse cultures. The goal of this project is to systematically study the associations between parental food intake and children's overweight and obesity in China, according to children's ages and regional differences.

Synthesis and characterization of grafting polystyrene from guar gum using atom transfer radical addition.

To broaden the application fields for guar gum, this natural polymer is often grafted to/from the surface to modify its properties. Guiyu, China, is well-known for the crude disposal of electronic waste (EW) and severe persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Therefore, in this study, the occurrence, composition, and source of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexabromobiphenyl (BB153), some novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs), Dechlorane Plus (DP) and polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PBDD/Fs) in farmland soils covering Guiyu were studied. In EW disposal area soils, PBDEs were the most abundant FRs, with concentrations of 13-1014 ng g.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon concentrations, compositions, sources, and associated carcinogenic risks to humans in farmland soils and riverine sediments from Guiyu, China.

The concentrations of 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in 23 farmland soil samples and 10 riverine sediment samples from Guiyu, China, and the carcinogenic risks associated with PAHs in the samples were evaluated. Guiyu is the largest electronic waste (EW) dismantling area globally, and has been well known for the primitive and crude manner in which EWs are disposed, such as by open burning and roasting. The total PAH concentrations were 56-567 ng/g in the soils and 181-3034 ng/g in the sediments.

A number of studies have reported on the prevalence of multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MDR-PA) among healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) in China; however, the exact rate of MDR-PA is unclear due to different definitions. Therefore, this meta-analysis was conducted to explore the prevalence of MDR-PA among HAIs in China based on an international recommended standard. Medline, Ovid, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and Wanfang databases were systematically searched and papers published before February 2014 providing exact data on MDR-PA in the Chinese population were identified.

Background: In the X-ray repair cross-complementing group 1 (XRCC1) gene, a polymorphism, Arg399Gln (rs25487), has been shown to change neoconservative amino acid and thus result in alternation of DNA repair capacity. Numerous studies have investigated the association between Arg399Gln and breast cancer risk in the American population, but yielding inconsistent results. This study aimed to clarify the role of this polymorphism in susceptibility to breast cancer.

Polymorphisms of mitochondrial DNA (mt-DNA) are particularly useful for monitoring specific pathogen populations like Phytophthora infestans. Basically type I and II of P. infestans mt-DNA were categorized by means of polymorphism lengths caused by an ~2 kb insertion, which can be detected via restriction enzyme digestion.

[Effect of UV-B radiation on the chemical composition and subsequent decomposition of Cyclobalanopsis glauca leaf litter].

A experiment on leaf litter decomposition was carried out to evaluate the effects of UV-B radiation on the chemical composition and subsequent decomposition of leaf litter in humid subtropical forest systems. The leaf litter was derived from Cyclobalanopsis glauca seedlings exposed to elevated and ambient ultraviolet B (UV-B) radiation treatments during growth for one year. The results showed that UV-B treatment significantly increased the original N, K and P content of leaf litter by 154.

The present study finished the first comprehensive survey of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in farmland soils of Guiyu, China. Guiyu was a major electronic wastes (EWs) dismantling area, but primitive and crude EWs disposal manner had led to severe PCDD/Fs pollution there. Twenty-three farmland soil samples covering the entire Guiyu region were analyzed.
