Systematic Review of Combined Pharmacotherapy for the Treatment of Alcohol Use Disorder in Patients Without Comorbid Conditions.

Background: Previous reviews have examined the use of theoretically supported combinations of drugs for the treatment of alcohol use disorder. This review seeks to examine the strengths and limitations of current clinical evidence for the use of combined pharmacological interventions intended to treat alcohol use disorder.

Objectives: The objective of this review was to identify combinations of pharmacological treatments for alcohol use disorder, and assess the strength of clinical evidence for these treatments.

Family Discord After Completion of an Outpatient Community Treatment Program Predicts Greater Substance Use During Follow-up.

Background: It is reasonable to consider family discord after treatment as a potential target for a next-step intervention, since family discord is often comorbid with substance use disorders.

Objective: This study evaluated family discord after completing an initial course of treatment as a predictor of substance use and retention in the community treatment program during follow-up.

Method: Patients were from two multisite randomized clinical trials implemented through the Clinical Trials Network of the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Childhood abuse and partner violence are associated with prenatal substance abuse, but the potential impact of current family discord, which reflects broader family relationships and encompasses problems less severe than violence, has had little evaluation in pregnant substance users. Using data from 196 pregnant substance users participating in a NIDA Clinical Trials Network randomized clinical trial, we examined the relationship of baseline family discord to substance use and treatment session attendance. Family discord was assessed using items from the family composite of the Addiction Severity Index.
