We report here the first occurrence of an adenosine deaminase-related growth factor (ADGF) that deaminates adenosine 5' monophosphate (AMP) in preference to adenosine. The ADGFs are a group of secreted deaminases found throughout the animal kingdom that affect the extracellular concentration of adenosine by converting it to inosine. The AMP deaminase studied here was first isolated and biochemically characterized from the roman snail Helix pomatia in 1983.

Article Synopsis
  • Microbial production of antibodies, particularly using engineered E. coli strains, shows potential for cost-effective industrial-scale manufacturing.
  • The success involved modifying the E. coli strain SHuffle to create an oxidative environment that facilitates proper protein folding and disulfide bond formation crucial for antibody production.
  • Testing with the popular antibody Humira indicated that the genetically engineered SHuffle2 could produce it four times more efficiently than its predecessor, both in smaller and larger fermentation setups.
