Aim: Malignant biliary obstructive disease is commonly managed with percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD). Traditionally, outcomes are evaluated collectively despite substantial variability in the underlying aetiology and extent of disease. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether variability in survival could be explained by different underlying patient and disease factors.

Objective: CHD predisposes children to neurodevelopmental delays. Frequent, prolonged hospitalisations during infancy prevent children with heart disease from participating in recommended language and cognitive development programmes, such as outpatient early childhood literacy programmes, and contribute to caregiver stress, a risk factor for adverse developmental outcomes. This study aims to describe the implementation of a single-centre inpatient early childhood literacy programme for hospitalised infants with heart disease and assess its impact on reading practices and patient-family hospital experience.

The majority of field corn, Zea mays L., in the southeastern United States has been genetically engineered to express insecticidal toxins produced by the soil bacterium, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). Field corn is the most important mid-season host for corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), which has developed resistance to all Cry toxins in Bt corn.

Article Synopsis
  • * A 2-year study found that feeding by brown stink bugs during the corn's late vegetative stages can cause severe damage, leading to deformed ears and a yield reduction of up to 92%.
  • * Additionally, higher brown stink bug densities resulted in a decrease in corn earworm larvae, showing a competitive relationship between these pests that could impact future pest management strategies.

Purpose: This study leverages pre-procedural data and machine learning (ML) techniques to predict outcomes at one year following prostate artery embolization (PAE).

Materials And Methods: This retrospective analysis combines data from the UK-ROPE registry and patients that underwent PAE at our institution between 2012 and 2023. Traditional ML approaches, including linear regression, lasso regression, ridge regression, decision trees and random forests, were used with leave-one-out cross-validation to predict international prostate symptom score (IPSS) at baseline and change at 1 year.

In the United States and elsewhere around the world, people with serious mental illness (SMI) are overrepresented in the criminal justice system. Clinical interventions to divert such individuals out of correctional settings, including Assertive Community Treatment (ACT), have been shown to reduce rates of criminal justice recidivism when modified to allow for the use of court sanctions to encourage treatment adherence. However, these interventions are noted to be underutilized as alternative to incarceration (ATI) programs.

Interpersonal trauma is a pervasive issue with devastating consequences for women and girls of diverse identities. Research has shown that there are many potential physiological consequences for experiencing trauma, and as such, treatment for trauma should incorporate the body. Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) has been emerging in the current literature as one body-oriented treatment approach effective in helping women and girls heal from interpersonal trauma.

Article Synopsis
  • * Analysis of 100 out of 216 patients showed that these comorbidities did not significantly influence the reduction in symptoms (measured by the International Prostate Symptom Score) after 12 months post-PAE.
  • * The only significant factor affecting symptom improvement was the size of the prostate, with larger prostates showing better symptom reduction, indicating that access to the prostatic artery is a key factor for treatment success regardless of cardiovascular health.

Background: Liver abscesses (LAs) are one of the most common and important problems faced by the beef industry. The most efficacious method for the prevention of LAs in North America is through dietary inclusion of low doses of antimicrobial drugs such as tylosin, but the mechanisms by which this treatment prevents LAs are not fully understood. LAs are believed to result from mucosal barrier dysfunction in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) allowing bacterial translocation to the liver via the portal vein, yet differences in the GIT microbiome of cattle with and without LAs have not been explored.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study focused on understanding the decision-making experiences of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and their caregivers, using qualitative interviews to gather insights.
  • - The analysis revealed three main themes: decisions often arise due to health decline, challenges include lack of information and complex health conditions, and certain factors like supportive caregivers can alleviate these challenges.
  • - The conclusion suggests that interventions should empower patients and caregivers to actively seek information and participate in their healthcare decisions before reaching advanced illness stages.

Importance: Family caregivers provide the majority of health care to the 18 million patients with cancer in the US. Yet despite providing complex medical and nursing care, a large proportion of caregivers report no formal support or training. In recognition of this gap, many interventions to support cancer caregivers have been developed and tested over the past 2 decades.

Research organizations should be proactive in regularly evaluating and refining their animal care and use programs in order to advance animal welfare and minimize distress. Pigs are often used in research, but few empirical studies have examined optimal husbandry and research use practices for pigs in a research environment. We developed the Pig Welfare Working Group (PWWG) to address the need for more formal guidelines on the management and use of pigs in research.

This review describes the rationale in support of admitting rights for interventional radiologists and presents options for the management of interventional radiology (IR) inpatients. The manuscript also discusses wider aspects of IR involvement in inpatient treatment, such as income and funding for IR services, and the implications for IR as a clinical specialty.

As interventional radiology (IR) treatments have evolved, they have become less invasive, enabling rapid recovery, which expedites ambulation and promotes same-day discharge. As a result of this, a significant proportion of IR elective work can be provided using a day-case service model. Reconfiguration of IR services to increase day-case procedures using a dedicated IR day-case unit (RDU) to facilitate the passage of patients is vital to ensure best medical practice.

Motivation: AlphaFold has been a major advance in predicting protein structure, but still leaves the problem of determining which sub-molecular components of a protein are essential for it to carry out its function within the cell. Direct coupling analysis predicts two- and three-amino acid contacts, but there may be essential interdependencies that are not proximal within the 3D structure. The problem to be addressed is to design a computational method that locates and ranks essential non-proximal interdependencies within a protein involving five or more amino acids, using large, multiple sequence alignments (MSAs) for both globular and intrinsically unstructured proteins.
