Are implant designer series believable? Comparison of survivorship between designer series and national registries.

Performance of hip and knee implants reported by the designing surgeon(s) is often felt to be more optimistic than those observed in non-designer series. The purpose of this study is to compare the survivorship of hip and knee prostheses in series reported by designers with those in national joint registries. Fifteen different hip and knee implant results published by designers were identified and compared to four national registries.

Does age or bilateral disease influence the value of hip arthroplasty?

Background: Measuring value in medicine is an increasingly important issue as healthcare spending continues to rise and cost containment becomes even more important. However, value assessments can be affected by patient factors and comorbidities.

Questions/purposes: We therefore quantified the approximate value of total hip arthroplasty and determined if patient age and Charnley classification affected the EuroQol5D (EQ5D) after hip arthroplasty.

Outcomes of isolated acetabular revision.

Unlabelled: Isolated acetabular revision can be associated with variable patient outcomes; there is a risk of hip instability. We evaluated 42 isolated acetabular revision operations and investigated the impact of patient age, diagnosis, bone stock, bone loss, bone augmentation, and obesity on pain and the Harris hip score. Frameshift mutations induced by three classes of acridines in the lacZ reversion assay in Escherichia coli: potency of responses and relationship to slipped mispairing models.

The frameshift mutagenicity of 9-aminoacridine (9AA) was compared with that of quinacrine, the acridine mustards ICR-191 and quinacrine mustard (QM), and the nitroacridine Entozon in the lacZ reversion assay in Escherichia coli. As intercalating agents, 9AA and quinacrine cause mutations through noncovalent associations with DNA. Mustards and nitroacridines form covalent adducts in DNA and give rise to different spectra of mutations.
