Article Synopsis
  • The study examines trends in plasma exchange (PLEX) use among adult patients with optic neuritis in the U.S. based on data from 2000 to 2020.
  • It reveals a notable increase in PLEX utilization, rising from 0.63% to 5.46%, with higher rates observed in the western states and predominantly in urban teaching hospitals.
  • Key findings indicate that patients receiving PLEX had longer hospital stays and incurred higher total charges, often experiencing specific medical comorbidities like glucocorticoid reactions and hemiplegia.

Importance: The length of stay (LOS) of hospitalizations may be a useful indicator of the burden of disease of corneal ulcers. Identifying variables associated with longer LOS may help to enhance delivery of care for high-risk patients.

Objective: To investigate the sociodemographic, social, and clinical factors associated with LOS in hospitalizations for corneal ulcers in the US.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection caused worldwide health problems, and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization in March 2020. Cardiovascular complications of COVID-19 are not uncommon; among them, arrhythmia is considered a significant risk factor for poor health outcomes in adults. However, data are scarce on the arrhythmia of pediatric patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection, possibly due to their mild symptoms and low incidence of cardiovascular involvement.

Article Synopsis
  • The Buschke-Löwenstein tumor (BLT), also known as giant condylomata acuminata (GCA), is a rare tumor linked to human papillomavirus (HPV) that typically appears in the perianal region.
  • A case is presented about a man who experienced instability and ringing in his ears, leading to an emergency assessment where symptoms of both condyloma acuminata and BLT were observed.
  • While surgical excision and adjuvant treatments can effectively remove BLT, further research is necessary to fully understand the disease and its implications.

Objective: Tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) is considered standard of care for acute ischemic stroke treatment, but some physicians withhold or delay this highly time-dependent therapy from stroke patients because they do not think it works well or they are worried about the adverse effects or fear medico-legal consequences. The authors sought to investigate whether litigation arises from physicians treating versus not treating acute ischemic stroke patients with tPA.

Methods: The authors examined closed cases from 1996 to 2020 in an online legal database, Westlaw, regarding alleged complaints for whether or not thrombolytic treatment was given for acute stroke.
