Social and Cognitive Skills (SCOPE)-a generic model for multi-professional work and education in healthcare.

In this article, we present a generic model for social and cognitive skills that can be used in work and (simulation-based) education in healthcare. We combined existing non-technical skills tools into a tool that we call SCOPE. SCOPE is a model that comprises the three social categories of "teamwork", "leading", and "task management" as well as the two cognitive categories of "situation awareness" and "decision making".

An interview study about how nurses and physicians talk about the same concepts differently.

Background: How healthcare professionals understand and use concepts of social and cognitive capabilities will influence their behaviour and their understanding of others' behaviour. Differing understandings of concepts might lead to healthcare professionals not acting in accordance with other healthcare professionals' expectations. Therefore, part of the problem concerning errors and adverse incidents concerning social and cognitive capabilities might be due to varying understandings of concepts among different healthcare professionals.

Effect of Vitamin D Supplementation on Graves' Disease: The DAGMAR Trial.

Treatment options in Graves' disease (GD) are limited and do not target the underlying autoimmunity, and relapse rates following a course of antithyroid drug (ATD) reach 50%. Previous research has shown promising results for a role of vitamin D in GD. We aimed to investigate whether vitamin D reduces failure to enter and sustain remission in patients with GD treated with ATD.

Shared responsibility for continuing professional development translates into short-term trade-offs.

Introduction: In Denmark, responsibility for continuing professional development (CPD) of consultants is shared between employers, often represented by heads of department, and the consultants themselves. This interview study explored patterns in the ways that shared responsibility is practiced in the context of financial, organisational and normative structures.

Methods: Semi-structured interviews were held with 26 consultants holding different levels of experience, including nine heads of department, across four specialties in five hospitals in the Capital Region of Denmark in 2019.

Use of analgesics in Denmark: A national survey.

Factors affecting workflow in robot-assisted surgery: a scoping review.

Background: Robot-assisted surgery is expanding worldwide. Most research in this field concentrates on surgeons' technical skills and patient outcome, but research from open and laparoscopic surgery shows that teamwork is crucial for patient safety. Team composition is changed in robot-assisted surgery with the surgeon placed away from the bedside, potentially altering teamwork and workflow in the operating theatre.

Localization of the Interaction Site of Herpes Simplex Virus Glycoprotein D (gD) on the Membrane Fusion Regulator, gH/gL.

A cascade of protein-protein interactions between four herpes simplex virus (HSV) glycoproteins (gD, gH/gL, and gB) drive fusion between the HSV envelope and host membrane, thereby allowing for virus entry and infection. Specifically, binding of gD to one of its receptors induces a conformational change that allows gD to bind to the regulatory complex gH/gL, which then activates the fusogen gB, resulting in membrane fusion. Using surface plasmon resonance and a panel of anti-gD monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) that sterically blocked the interaction, we previously showed that gH/gL binds directly to gD at sites distinct from the gD receptor binding site.

Muscle Performance and Postural Stability Are Reduced in Patients with Newly Diagnosed Graves' Disease.

Reduced muscle strength is an acknowledged symptom of Graves' disease, but the knowledge on severity is sparse. This study aimed to investigate muscle strength, balance, and muscle function in patients with Graves' disease compared to age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Using a cross-sectional design, 55 patients newly diagnosed with Graves' disease were compared to 55 euthyroid controls, matched on sex, age, and menopausal status.

LIFESTAT - Living with statins: An interdisciplinary project on the use of statins as a cholesterol-lowering treatment and for cardiovascular risk reduction.

Aim: LIFESTAT is an interdisciplinary project that leverages approaches and knowledge from medicine, the humanities and the social sciences to analyze the impact of statin use on health, lifestyle and well-being in cohorts of Danish citizens. The impetus for the study is the fact that 10% of the population in the Scandinavian countries are treated with statins in order to maintain good health and to avoid cardiovascular disease by counteracting high blood levels of cholesterol. Prevalence of cancer in Danish patients referred to a fast-track diagnostic pathway is substantial.

Introduction: Danish patients diagnosed with cancer who present with unspecific signs and symptoms are diagnosed with unfavourable delay, which has led to the establishment of a national fast-track (cancer) pathway. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of cancer and other diagnoses in patients referred to this programme at Aarhus University Hospital from general practitioners. Furthermore, we aimed to characterise the patient cohort, assess survival and estimate the predictive values of symptoms, signs and biochemical abnormalities.

This study provides data on prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus in oropharynx, rhinopharynx and vestibulum nasi. Specimens were taken from these three pharyngeal sites in 346 patients and analysed for S. aureus.

Identification of haemolytic Haemophilus species isolated from human clinical specimens and description of Haemophilus sputorum sp. nov.

Haemolytic Haemophilus strains with no requirement for X factor are regularly isolated from sputum and throat swabs and occasionally from invasive infections, but the classification of such strains is not clear. We characterized 56 strains with a phenotype concordant with Haemophilus parahaemolyticus (V, but not X factor-dependent; urease-positive; tryptophanase-negative; ornithine decarboxylase-negative) by extended phenotypic testing and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. In addition, 31 of the strains and representative type strains were investigated by multilocus sequence analysis based on 3 housekeeping gene fragments.

Taxonomy and identification of fastidious Gram negatives are evolving and challenging. We compared identifications achieved with the Vitek 2 Neisseria-Haemophilus (NH) card and partial 16S rRNA gene sequence (526 bp stretch) analysis with identifications obtained with extensive phenotypic characterization using 100 fastidious Gram negative bacteria. Seventy-five strains represented 21 of the 26 taxa included in the Vitek 2 NH database and 25 strains represented related species not included in the database.

Candida orthopsilosis and Candida metapsilosis are recently described species phenotypically indistinguishable from Candida parapsilosis . We evaluated phenotyping and molecular methods for the detection of these species among 79 unique blood culture isolates of the C. parapsilosis group obtained during the years 2004-2008.

Social science perspectives on schistosomiasis control in Africa: past trends and future directions.

New ways of integrating and scaling up control of neglected tropical diseases (including schistosomiasis) are presently underway. In this context consideration of social science perspectives is essential. In this article, we review social science publications of relevance to sustained control of schistosomiasis in Africa including diagnosis and screening, treatment, supply of clean water and improved sanitation, as well as health communication.

Outbreak of Clostridium difficile 027 in North Zealand, Denmark, 2008-2009.

We report an outbreak of Clostridium difficile PCR ribotype 027 in Denmark. The outbreak includes to date 73 cases from the area north of Copenhagen, but there may be related cases elsewhere in Zealand. Most infections are healthcare-associated and in patients who previously received antibiotic treatment.

Listeria monocytogenes: maternal-foetal infections in Denmark 1994-2005.

Maternal-foetal infection by Listeria monocytogenes is a rare complication in pregnancy. In the period 1994-2005, 37 culture-confirmed cases of maternal-foetal Listeria monocytogenes infections were reported in Denmark. We examined 36 patients' files in order to evaluate risk factors, clinical and laboratory findings, response to therapy, and outcome for maternal-foetal listeriosis.

Semi-national surveillance of fungaemia in Denmark 2004-2006: increasing incidence of fungaemia and numbers of isolates with reduced azole susceptibility.
