Primary care clinicians play a key role in asthma and asthma exacerbation management worldwide because most patients with asthma are treated in primary care settings. The high burden of asthma exacerbations persists and important practice gaps remain, despite continual advances in asthma care. Lack of primary care-specific guidance, uncontrolled asthma, incomplete assessment of exacerbation and asthma control history, and reliance on systemic corticosteroids or short-acting beta-agonist-only therapy are challenges clinicians face today with asthma care.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Faster lung function impairment occurs earlier in the disease, particularly in mild-to-moderate COPD, highlighting the need for early and effective targeted interventions. Partial differential equations (PDEs) are among the most universal and parsimonious descriptions of natural physical laws, capturing a rich variety of phenomenology and multiscale physics in a compact and symbolic representation. Here, we examine several promising avenues of PDE research that are being advanced by machine learning, including (1) discovering new governing PDEs and coarse-grained approximations for complex natural and engineered systems, (2) learning effective coordinate systems and reduced-order models to make PDEs more amenable to analysis, and (3) representing solution operators and improving traditional numerical algorithms. In each of these fields, we summarize key advances, ongoing challenges, and opportunities for further development.

Walking animals must maintain stability in the presence of external perturbations, despite significant temporal delays in neural signaling and muscle actuation. Here, we develop a 3D kinematic model with a layered control architecture to investigate how sensorimotor delays constrain robustness of walking behavior in the fruit fly, . Motivated by the anatomical architecture of insect locomotor control circuits, our model consists of three component layers: a neural network that generates realistic 3D joint kinematics for each leg, an optimal controller that executes the joint kinematics while accounting for delays, and an inter-leg coordinator.

Chronic kidney disease associated with Type 2 diabetes is linked to significant increase in morbidity, reduced quality of life, and early death. Current guidelines recommend targets for the management of hyperglycemia, hypertension, and dyslipidemia but there remains a residual risk of chronic kidney disease progression and adverse cardiovascular outcomes in patients with Type 2 diabetes. The 2022 consensus report from the American Diabetes Association and Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes support the use of sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors and nonsteroidal mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists to improve kidney and cardiovascular outcomes.
