Two experiments were used to investigate the influence of both native and non-native speech on the categorization of a set of an object's motions by 9-month-olds. In Experiment 1, infants were habituated to a set of three object motions and tested with familiar and novel motions. Results of Experiment 1 show that infants were more likely to categorize the motion stimuli if they listened to either the native or non-native speech during the categorization process than if they listened to music or heard nothing at all.

SIgA binds bacteria using specific antigenic sites or non-specifically via its glycans attached to α-heavy-chain and secretory component. In our study, we tested the hypothesis that human and bovine SIgA have similar innate-binding activity for bacteria.

However, systolic BP may not indicate the patient's true vasoactive status-best approximated by systemic vascular resistance-because cardiac output is also a contributing factor. Impedance cardiography (ICG) is a validated noninvasive method of measuring cardiac output and systemic vascular resistance.

A review is presented of kinetic-energy distribution measurements for ions striking grounded surfaces in a Gaseous Electronics Conference (GEC) rf Reference Cell. Two experimental arrangements that have been used to measure ion energies in the GEC Cell are described, and a comparison of their performance under different operating conditions is presented. Significant results from ion-energy analysis in the Reference Cell are highlighted, including evidence of effects due to surface conditions on ion sampling, verification of electrical behavior of the cell, inferences about ion-molecule reactions indicated by the shapes of measured ion kinetic-energy distributions (IEDs), and the use of measured IEDs for the validation of theoretical models.

A detailed description is given of an electronic stochastic analyzer for use with direct "real-time" measurements of the conditional distributions needed for a complete stochastic characterization of pulsating phenomena that can be represented as random point processes. The measurement system described here is designed to reveal and quantify effects of pulse-to-pulse or phase-to-phase memory propagation. The unraveling of memory effects is required so that the physical basis for observed statistical properties of pulsating phenomena can be understood.

Ischaemia was produced by occlusion of the left descending coronary artery for 10 min. Compared to activities measured in tissue from normally perfused hearts, GPAT activity measured in tissue from the ischaemic area was considerably reduced.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFGlycerol 3-phosphate acyltransferase (GPAT) activity and triglyceride lipase (TGL) activity were measured in homogenates from hearts perfused with adrenergic agonists and antagonists. Perfusion with adrenalin or the beta-agonist isoprenaline produced an increase in TGL activity and a fall in GPAT activity. These changes could be imitated by incubation of heart homogenates with cAMP-dependent protein kinase.

The most abundant, long-lived stable gaseous species generated by corona discharges in SF gas containing trace levels of O and HO are the oxyfluorides SOF, SOF, and SOF. Absolute energy and charge rates-of-production of these and the minor products SO, OCS, and CO have been measured at different total gas pressures from 100 kPa to 300 kPa and for discharges of different current, power, and polarity. Oxyfluoride yields for SF/O mixtures containing up to 10% O have also been measured.
