Examination of humoral immunity factors in the pleural exudate was carried out in 49 patients: 15 patients had clotted postoperative hemothorax, 10 patients had bronchial fistulas after pulmonectomy, 24 patients were included in a control group. In patients with clotted postoperative hemothorax a decreased circulating immune complex (CIC) level in the pleural exudate was observed on the 10th-14th days followed by the elevation of the CIC level with a simultaneous increase in the IgA concentration and a decrease in the IgC and IgM concentration. Characteristic of the patients with bronchial fistulas and pleural empyemas was the two-fold increase of the IgA, IgM and IgG level in the pleural exudate as compared with the normal postoperative course.

The authors treated 9 patients with intrathoracic adipose tumors of rare localization. In 4 cases the lipoma arose from the thoracic wall, in 2 directly from the mediastinum, and in another 2 from the pericardium. In order to determine the place-frequency map of the cochlea in the marsupial Monodelphis domestica, iontophoretic HRP-injections were made at several locations in the ventral cochlear nucleus. Prior to iontophoresis the auditory neurons at these locations were characterized electrophysiologically. The resulting distribution of retrogradely labeled cochlear spiral ganglion cells was analysed by means of a three dimensional reconstruction of the cochlea.

Compared to acoustically unspecialized mammals (soricids and murids), the middle ear of subterranean insectivores and rodents (twelve species of six families examined) was clearly distinguished and characterized by many common features: rather round and relatively larger eardrum without a pars flaccida; reduced gonial; loose or no connection between the malleus and the tympanic bone; reduced and straightened transversal part of the malleus; enlarged incus; increased and rather flat incudo-mallear joint; rather parallel position of the mallear manubrium and incudal crus longum in some species (and their fusion in bathyergids); reduced or even missing middle ear muscles. Convergent occurrence of these structural features in taxa of different origin and their generally derived character suggest that they cannot be categorized as degenerative. The form of the stapes can be considered as a non-adaptive trait; it was taxon specific yet remarkably polymorphous in some species and exhibited no convergent features among subterranean mammals.
