Background: Medical students and doctors face various challenges in clinical practice. Some of these challenges are related to ethical issues. Therefore, teaching ethics respectively building moral competences has become an integral part of the medical curriculum in Germany and many other countries.

In Vivo Cardiac Electrophysiology in Mice: Determination of Atrial and Ventricular Arrhythmic Substrates.

Cardiac arrhythmias are a common cardiac condition that might lead to fatal outcomes. A better understanding of the molecular and cellular basis of arrhythmia mechanisms is necessary for the development of better treatment modalities. To aid these efforts, various mouse models have been developed for studying cardiac arrhythmias.

PET/CT-identified atrial hypermetabolism is an index of atrial inflammation in patients with atrial fibrillation.

Background: Although atrial inflammation has been implicated in the pathophysiology of atrial fibrillation (AF), the identification of atrial inflammation remains challenging. We aimed to establish a positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) protocol with Fluor-labeled fluorodeoxyglucose (F-FDG) for the detection of atrial hypermetabolism as surrogate for inflammation in AF.

Methods: We included n = 75 AF and n = 75 non-AF patients undergoing three common PET/CT protocols (n = 25 per group) optimized for the detection of (a) inflammation and (b) malignancy in predefined fasting protocols, and (c) cardiac viability allowing for maximized glucose uptake.

Low skeletal muscle mass is predictive of dose-limiting toxicities in head and neck cancer patients undergoing low-dose weekly cisplatin chemoradiotherapy.

Background: The dose-limiting effect of CT-assessed low skeletal muscle mass (LSMM) measured at the level of the third cervical vertebra has been found in head and neck cancer patients receiving high-dose cisplatin chemoradiotherapy. The aim of this study was to investigate the predictive factors for dose-limiting toxicities (DLTs) using low-dose weekly chemoradiotherapy.

Materials And Methods: Head and neck cancer patients receiving definite chemoradiotherapy with weekly 40 mg/m2 body surface area (BSA) cisplatin or paclitaxel 45 mg/m2 BSA and carboplatin AUC2 were consecutively included and retrospectively analysed.

General practice in the German Democratic Republic (1949-1990) : A discipline between threat and professionalization.

Background: In the 1950s the socialist health policy in East Germany did not follow a clear-cut course with regard to outpatient medical care. Whilst state-run policlinics gradually took the place of doctors in private practice, the required qualifications of physicians working in outpatient care remained unclear. After preparatory lobbying by committed physicians from the outpatient sector, the 1960 Weimar Health Conference finally paved the way for the preservation and professionalization of general practice in East Germany.

Role of catheter location on local impedance measurements and clinical outcome with the new direct sense technology in cardiac ablation procedures.

Background: A novel catheter technology (direct sense, DS) enables periprocedural local impedance (LI) measurement for estimation of tissue contact during radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for real-time assessment of lesion generation. This measure reflects specific local myocardial conduction properties in contrast to the established global impedance (GI) using a neutral body electrode. Our study aimed to assess representative LI values for the cardiac chambers, to evaluate LI drop in response to RF delivery and to compare those values to established GI measures in patients undergoing RFA procedures.

Introduction: Since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, COVID-19 has changed the medical landscape. International recommendations for localized prostate cancer (PCa) include deferred treatment and adjusted therapeutic routines.

Materials And Methods: To longitudinally evaluate changes in PCa treatment strategies in urological and radiotherapy departments in Germany, a link to a survey was sent to 134 institutions covering two representative baseline weeks prior to the pandemic and 13 weeks from March 2020 to February 2021.

Comparison of avascular lymph node fragment transplantation techniques to optimize lymphangiogenesis in the minipig model.

Background: Secondary lymphoedema is a challenging pandemic. This condition may arise after oncologic resection of tumor-draining lymph nodes and/or radiation. Plastic-surgical procedures for lymphoedema comprise transplantation of vascularized lymph node flaps, which are, however, technically challenging and difficult to implement on a global level due to the scarcity of microsurgery facilities in some countries.

Vitamin D Supplementation Enhances C18(dihydro)ceramide Levels in Type 2 Diabetes Patients.

Sphingolipids are characterized by a broad range of bioactive properties. Particularly, the development of insulin resistance, a major pathophysiological hallmark of Type 2 Diabetes mellitus (T2D), has been linked to ceramide signaling. Since vitamin D supplementation may slow down T2D progression by improving glucose concentrations and insulin sensitivity, we investigated whether vitamin D supplementation impacts on plasma sphingolipid levels in T2D patients.

"History, Theory, Ethics of Medicine" (German: "Geschichte, Theorie, Ethik der Medizin", abbreviation: GTE) forms part of the obligatory curriculum for medical students in Germany since the winter semester 2003/2004. This paper presents the results of a national survey on the contents, methods and framework of GTE teaching. Semi-structured questionnaire dispatched in July 2014 to 38 institutions responsible for GTE teaching.
