Vitality assessment of exposed lichens along different altitudes. Influence of weather conditions.

To evaluate the effects of the ambient climatic conditions in lichen vitality along some well oriented transect in different altitudes, lichen transplants of Parmotrema bangii were exposed approximately every 250 m starting from 50 to 1500 m during a 1-year period in 3 transects along Pico mountain at Azores; electric conductivity of leachates, elemental concentrations, and the ambient conditions such as temperature, precipitation, humidity, and altitude were the compared parameters. According to the obtained values of electric conductivity, it is credible to consider that vitality was not seriously affected under different altitudes. In accordance with previous studies, electric conductivity values in this study show high negative correlation with precipitation and humidity.

TTFs nonsymmetrically fused with alkylthiophenic moieties.

Two new dithiolene ligand precursors, containing fused TTF and alkyl thiophenic moieties 3,3'-{[2-(5-(tert-butyl)thieno[2,3-d][1,3]dithiol-2-ylidene)-1,3-dithiole-4,5-diyl]bis[sulfanediyl]}dipropanenitrile (α-tbtdt, 1), and 3,3'-{[2-(5-methylthieno[2,3-d][1,3]dithiol-2-ylidene)-1,3-dithiole-4,5-diyl]bis[sulfanediyl]}dipropanenitrile (α-mtdt, 2), were synthesized and characterized. The electrochemical properties of these electronic donors were studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) in dichloromethane. Both compounds show two quasi-reversible oxidation processes, versus Ag/AgCl, typical of TTF donors at E (1) 1/2 = 279 V and E (2) 1/2 = 680 V for 1 and E (1) 1/2 = 304 V and E (2) 1/2 = 716 V in the case of 2.

Thermal hysteresis in a spin-crossover Fe(III) quinolylsalicylaldimine complex, Fe(III)(5-Br-qsal)2Ni(dmit)2·solv: solvent effects.

The Fe(III) complexes Fe(5-Br-qsal)2Ni(dmit)2·solv with solv = CH2Cl2 (1) and (CH3)2CO (2) were synthesized, and their structural and magnetic properties were studied. While magnetization and Mössbauer spectroscopy data of 1 showed a gradual spin transition, compound 2 evidenced an abrupt transition with a thermal hysteresis of 13 K close to room temperature (T1/2 ↓ ∼273 K and T1/2 ↑ ∼286 K). A similar packing arrangement of segregated layers of cations and anions was found for 1 and 2.

[Fe(nsal2trien)]SCN, a new two-step iron(III) spin crossover compound, with symmetry breaking spin-state transition and an intermediate ordered state.

We report the synthesis of the iron(III) complex of the hexadentate Schiff base ligand nsal2trien obtained from the condensation of triethylenetetramine and 2 equiv. of 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde. The study of the salt [Fe(nsal2trien)]SCN (1) by magnetic susceptibility measurements and Mössbauer spectroscopy reveals a rather unique behavior that displays thermally induced spin crossover (SCO) with two well-separated steps at 250 (gradual transition) and 142 K (steep transition).
