Background: Pregnant women with hypertensive disorders are at increased risk for inflammatory diseases and oxidative stress. The dilemma raised by the best dosage of calcium supplementation on these factors is evident. The aim of the current study was to examine the effects of calcium on biomarkers of the purinergic system, inflammation and oxidative stress, which are factors contributing to vascular damage in pregnant women at high risk of pre-eclampsia.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze how common polypharmacy (the use of multiple medications) and potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) use is among older adults with hypertension.
  • It involved data collection through medical records and interviews at a Family Health Strategy unit, with statistical analysis revealing a 38.09% prevalence of polypharmacy and 28.57% for PIMs.
  • The findings highlighted significant associations between polypharmacy, PIM use, sleep issues, ethnicity, and family dynamics, indicating that both polypharmacy and PIMs are critical concerns for the health and well-being of vulnerable older adults.

Objective: To evaluate the trend of hospitalizations due to primary care sensitive conditions and its relationship with the Family Health Strategy coverage.

Methods: Ecological study of time series using the records from the Hospital Information System, from 2005 to 2015, with data for the state of Goiás, Brazil. Trend analyses were performed by the generalized linear regression method of Prais-Winsten with robust variance, which allowed to verify if the trend of hospitalizations due to primary care sensitive conditions was stationary (p > 0.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare central and brachial systemic blood pressure (SBP) between men and women over 60 years old with systemic arterial hypertension.
  • Conducted in Uberlândia, Brazil, the research involved 69 elderly participants and utilized a Sphygmocor® XCEL device to assess blood pressure differences.
  • Results indicated that elderly women had significantly higher central and brachial SBP and pulse pressure compared to elderly men, highlighting the need for gender-specific considerations in hypertension management.

Article Synopsis
  • Systolic blood pressure (SP) and pulse pressure (PP) increase with age due to decreased arterial elasticity, and central arterial pressure (SAP) at the aorta is a better predictor of cardiovascular mortality than brachial SAP.
  • The study compared central SAP and brachial SAP in 244 hypertensive patients across five age groups (39-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, and over 80).
  • Results indicated significant differences between central and brachial SP and PP starting at 50 years old, suggesting that measuring SP and PP at the aorta is more accurate in older adults.
