The National Cancer Institute (NCI) recognizes the potential of technologies based on the use of nanoparticles (NPs) in revolutionizing clinical approaches to the diagnosis and prognosis of cancer. Recent research suggests that once NPs come into contact with the biological fluid of cancer patients, they are covered by proteins, forming a "protein corona" composed of hundreds of plasma proteins. The concept of a personalized, disease-specific protein corona, demonstrating substantial differences in NP corona profiles between patients with and without cancer, has been introduced.

Background And Aim: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the prevalence and to identify the independent predictors of multi-drug resistance among a cohort of patients admitted to emergency department for urinary tract infections (UTI), and to assess the impact of antimicrobial resistance on the clinical outcomes.

Methods: We conducted a prospective multicentre study enrolling all adult patients admitted to one of the eight emergency departments participating in the study with a microbiologically confirmed diagnosis of UTI from February 2023 to July 2024. The primary outcome evaluated was 30-day mortality; secondary outcomes included 7-day mortality and clinical response.

: The advantage of a robotic-assisted (RARP) over a laparoscopic (LRP) approach in radical prostatectomy (RP) remains to be demonstrated. : The aim of the study is to use a homogeneous population in real life and single primary surgeon surgery to analyze the oncological and functional results based on the type of surgical approach and pathological features. : This is a prospective trial on non-metastatic prostate cancer (PCa) patients considered after a multidisciplinary decision to conduct a RP, using a RARP or LRP approach.

Article Synopsis
  • Lung cancer is a major health issue in Australia and New Zealand, with 16,000 new cases annually, and variations in care and outcomes have been noted over the years without established benchmarks.
  • A study utilized a modified eDelphi consensus process to define clinical quality indicators relevant to lung and thoracic cancer care, involving clinicians, patient advocates, and researchers from across the region.
  • Ultimately, 27 clinical quality indicators were agreed upon, aiming to improve the quality of care, with plans for future implementation using real-world data across Australia.

Introduction: Disability, resulting from altered interactions between individuals and their environment, is a worldwide issue causing inequities and suffering. Many diseases associated with breathlessness cause disability but the relationship between disability and the severity of breathlessness itself is unknown. This study evaluated associations between disability using the WHO's Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS) 2.

There are no known estimates of the prevalence, severity and impacts from breathlessness in low- and middle-income countries. This study aimed to explore the prevalence, severity, self-attributed underlying conditions and impacts of breathlessness limiting exertion in community-dwelling adults in India. This exploratory, population-based online survey recruited a pre-planned sample of 3,000 adult respondents stratified by age, sex and rurality (quotas as per the 2011 Indian National Census).

Introduction: Persistent breathlessness (breathlessness persisting despite optimal treatment for the underlying condition and resulting in disability) is a prevalent syndrome associated with chronic and life-limiting conditions. Improving the clinical recognition and assessment of persistent breathlessness is essential to ensure people are provided with the best treatment for optimal symptom control.

Areas Covered: This overview focuses on the impact of persistent breathlessness on patients, carers and the health system.

Article Synopsis
  • Patients with poor-grade subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) often need long-term mechanical ventilation and may require tracheostomy to aid recovery; percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy (PDT) is the preferred method despite potential risks.
  • A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of PDT on cerebral, hemodynamic, and respiratory variables, as well as complications and outcomes in SAH patients undergoing early tracheostomy after aneurysm treatment.
  • The findings showed a temporary increase in intracranial pressure during PDT, especially in patients with higher therapy intensity, but complications were low, possibly due to a dedicated "tracheo-team" following strict protocols.

Introduction: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality, comprising the largest national cancer disease burden in Australia and New Zealand. Regional reports identify substantial evidence-practice gaps, unwarranted variation from best practice, and variation in processes and outcomes of care between treating centres. The Australia and New Zealand Lung Cancer Registry (ANZLCR) will be developed as a Clinical Quality Registry to monitor the safety, quality and effectiveness of lung cancer care in Australia and New Zealand.
