Aim: 2019-Coronavirus reached the French island of Reunion, which is marked by a very high prevalence of metabolic disorders such as obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), in March 2020. The objective was to determine the metabolic factors associated with the severity of SARS-CoV-2 infection in Reunion Island.

Methods: This retrospective observational cohort study enrolled patients who were hospitalized on the island from March 11th, 2020 to August 4th, 2021.

Introduction: Reunion Island, a French overseas department, is located in the southern hemisphere, close to the Capricorn tropic. This island has a multicultural and multiethnic population of 860 000 inhabitants, a quarter of whom are at high risk of developing skin cancer due to intense ultraviolet radiation. Melanoma is responsible for the majority of skin cancer deaths.

The aim of the psychotrauma prevention algorithm is to limit the occurrence of psychotrauma in a subject who has experienced a serious life event, by carrying out an initial assessment to define the severity criterion and the monitoring modality best suited to his or her clinical condition. This approach is in line with the philosophy of outreach and the ethics of concern. Recontacting the patient during the course of treatment helps to maintain the therapeutic link and prevent any deterioration in his condition, thus limiting the risk of his traumatic state becoming chronic.

Background: The remarkable resistance to ionizing radiation found in anhydrobiotic organisms, such as some bacteria, tardigrades, and bdelloid rotifers has been hypothesized to be incidental to their desiccation resistance. Both stresses produce reactive oxygen species and cause damage to DNA and other macromolecules. However, this hypothesis has only been investigated in a few species.

Introduction: Health quality of life assessment is particularly important to measure the impact of chronic diseases. The aims of this study were to provide a cross-culturally adapted Creole-translation of the Medical Outcome Study Short-Form 36 (SF-36) and to assess psychometric performance of the Creole and French versions of the SF-36 among patients with type II diabetes in Reunion Island.

Materials And Methods: The Creole translation and cross-cultural adaptation processes were based on the International Quality Of Life Assessment (IQOLA) methods.

Asphalt is subjected to aging, leading to physical and chemical modifications reducing its performance. Recently, the Western Research Institute developed the SAR-AD method that allowed the separation of asphalt into eight fractions (saturates, aromatics 1, aromatics 2, aromatics 3, resins, asphaltenes 1, asphaltene 2, and asphaltenes 3). In this work, this analytical method was used to study asphalt aging processes in greater detail.

Introduction: Due to the high prevalence of diabetes and its complications, evaluating the patient's quality of life is critical. EQ-5D-5L is a valid tool for assessing health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in chronic diseases, including diabetes. However, no psychometric measures have been validated in a Creole-speaking population.

For decades, it has been known that the creation of oxygenated functional groups, especially carbonyl and sulfoxide, is among the main causes of chemical aging and degradation of asphalt. However, is the oxidation of a bitumen homogeneous? The focus of this paper was to follow the oxidation phenomena through an asphalt puck during a pressure aging vessel (PAV) test. According to the literature, the asphalt oxidation process that leads to the creation of oxygenated functions can be divided into the following successive main steps: the absorption of oxygen in asphalt at the air/asphalt interface, diffusion into the matrix, and reaction with asphalt molecules.

Background: Bdelloid rotifers are micro-invertebrates distributed worldwide, from temperate latitudes to the most extreme areas of the planet like Antarctica or the Atacama Desert. They have colonized any habitat where liquid water is temporarily available, including terrestrial environments such as soils, mosses, and lichens, tolerating desiccation and other types of stress such as high doses of ionizing radiation (IR). It was hypothesized that bdelloid desiccation and radiation resistance may be attributed to their potential ability to repair DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs).

Introduction: Family members who care for elderly people experience high levels of chronic stress because of the intensive assistance they provide permanently to those who are losing their autonomy. Often considered a burden, this stress causes serious consequences to their health and worsens their quality of life (QoL). Reducing caregivers' chronic stress via self-hypnosis protocols may be an effective treatment.

Introduction: Improved knowledge of prediabetic subjects' profile and their risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) would enhance secondary prevention. The primary objective is to describe factors associated with incident T2DM in subjects with pre-diabetes diagnosed in primary care.

Methods And Analysis: The study is based on Reunion Island, a French overseas region that experiences a particularly high disease burden of T2DM.

The aim of this study was to compare the prognosis of patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF) due to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variant 501Y.V2 to that of patients with ARF due to the original strain. This retrospective matched cohort study included all consecutive patients who were hospitalized for ARF due to SARS-CoV-2 in Reunion Island University Hospital between March 2020 and March 2021.

Objectives: The purpose of this cohort study was to develop two scores able to differentiate coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) from dengue and other febrile illnesses (OFIs).

Methods: All subjects suspected of COVID-19 who attended the SARS-CoV-2 testing center of Saint-Pierre hospital, Reunion, between March 23 and May 10, 2020, were assessed for identifying predictors of both infectious diseases from a multinomial logistic regression model. Two scores were developed after weighting the odd ratios then validated by bootstrapping.

Objective: Laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy is the standard surgery to correct apical pelvic organ prolapse. It is currently mainly practiced in the context of a conventional hospitalization, but more and more practitioners are developing it as an outpatient procedure. The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of outpatient laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy and patient satisfaction.

Introduction: (CT) infection is the commonest bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the world. Often asymptomatic, it can lead to significant complications in women. In France, since 2003, systematic screening for CT in STI center has been recommended for women aged less than 25 year.

Space exposure experiments from the last 15 years have unexpectedly shown that several terrestrial organisms, including some multi-cellular species, are able to survive in open space without protection. The robustness of bdelloid rotifers suggests that these tiny creatures can possibly be added to the still restricted list of animals that can deal with the exposure to harsh condition of space. Bdelloids are one of the smallest animals on Earth.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of pulmonary embolism in returning travelers with hypoxemic pneumonia due to COVID-19. All returning travelers to Reunion Island with hypoxemic pneumonia due to COVID-19 underwent computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA) and were included in the cohort. Thirty-five patients were returning travelers with hypoxemic pneumonia due to COVID-19 and had recently returned from one of the countries most affected by the COVID-19 outbreak (mainly from France and Comoros archipelago).

Objective: Unlike several other national health agencies, French health authorities recommended that the newer direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) agents only be prescribed as second choice for the treatment of newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF), with vitamin K antagonists (VKA) remaining the first choice. We investigated the patterns of use of DOACs versus VKA in the treatment of NVAF in France over the first 5 years of DOAC availability. We also identified the changes in patient characteristics of those who initiated DOAC treatment over this time period.

Introduction: The fight against smoking is a major challenge for public health in Reunion Island. This French overseas department knows considerable social inequalities and so there is a possibility of free access to nicotine substitution among disadvantaged patients. The objective was to describe the social characteristics, the level of addiction to smoking and the actual level of smoking cessation at 18 months of tobacco-smoking patients from Reunion who consulted in 2014.
