Herein, we demonstrate the prospects of tackling several environmental problems by transforming a local rice husk residue into an effective adsorbent, which was then applied for the treatment of real landfill leachate (LL). The study focused on establishing (i) the effect of simple washing on morphological aspects, (ii) evaluating target adsorption capacity for total iron (Fe) and nickel (Ni), (iii) determining regeneration and reuse potential of the adsorbent and (iv) complying to the requirements of worldwide legislations for reuse of treated LL wastewater. The adsorbent was prepared by employing a simple yet effective purification process that can be performed in situ.

In this context, this study aimed to investigate the viral diversity in mosquitoes of the genera , , and from a transition area between the Amazon, Cerrado, and Caatinga biomes in Brazil. Metagenomic high-throughput sequencing was used to characterize the virome of 20 mosquito pools.

Here, we hypothesized that multisensory stimulation would reverse memory impairment caused by the inactivation of Adrβ (AdrβKO) with consequent inhibition of sustained glial-mediated inflammation. To test this, 21- and 86-day-old AdrβKO mice were exposed to an 8-week multisensory stimulation (MS) protocol that comprised gustatory and olfactory stimuli of positive and negative valence; intellectual challenges to reach food; the use of hidden objects; and the presentation of food in ways that prompted foraging, which was followed by analysis of GFAP, Iba-1 and EAAT2 protein expression in the hippocampus (HC) and amygdala (AMY).

Tests related to adsorption kinetics, equilibrium isotherms and adsorbent reuse were studied, and optimization parameters related to the initial pH of the solution and the adsorbent dosage were defined. For all pharmaceuticals, adsorption tests indicated that removal efficiency was independent of initial pH at adsorbent dosages of 0.

Viruses with encephalitogenic potential can cause neurological conditions of clinical and epidemiological importance, such as , , , , , , , and . The objective of the present study was to determine the number of arboviruses with neuroinvasive potential isolated in Brazil that corresponds to the collection of viral samples belonging to the Department of Arbovirology and Hemorrhagic Fevers, Evandro Chagas Institute (SAARB/IEC) of the Laboratory Network of National Reference for Arbovirus Diagnosis from 1954 to 2022. In the analyzed period, a total of 1,347 arbovirus samples with encephalitogenic potential were isolated from mice; 5,065 human samples were isolated exclusively by cell culture; and 676 viruses were isolated from mosquitoes.

In Brazil, serological studies have already indicated the circulation of the virus since 2003, with the first human case detected in 2014. The objective of the present paper is to report the first isolation of WNV in a Culex (Melanoconion) mosquito.

The genus Limatus (Diptera: Culicidae) are wild mosquitoes belonging to the Sabethini tribe that occurs in tropical countries and is related to transmission cycles of Orthobunyavirus (Bunyaviridae), particularly in the Amazon region. Given the unavailability of information related to evolutionary biology and molecular taxonomy aspects of this genus, we report here the first complete sequencing of the mitochondrial genome of Limatus durhamii Theobald, 1901. The NextSeq 500 platform was used for sample sequencing, and the mitochondrial sequence obtained was 14,875 bp long, comprising 37 functional subunits (13 PCGs, 22 tRNA and 02 rRNA).

Alzheimer disease's (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive and behavioral impairment. The central nervous system is an important target of thyroid hormones (TH). An inverse association between serum triiodothyronine (T3) levels and the risk of AD symptoms and progression has been reported.

Here, we tested whether multisensory stimulation (MS) improves the phenotype of rats born to surgically thyroidectomized (Tx) dams suboptimally treated with LT4. 8-week-old female Tx Wistar rats were kept on daily LT4 (0.

This has been attributed to reduced thyroid hormone (TH) signaling and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in the brain. Here we studied the Thr92Ala-Dio2 mouse model and saw that older male mice (7-8-month-old) exhibited a more severe cognition impairment, which extended to different aspects of declarative and working memories.

Methods: Pools of hematophagous arthropods were inoculated in Vero and C6/36 cells.
Objective: Obesity is characterized by a state of chronic, low-intensity systemic inflammation frequently associated with insulin resistance and dyslipidemia.
Methods: Given that chronic inflammation has been implicated in the pathogenesis of mood disorders, we investigated if chronic obesity that was initiated early in life - lasting through adulthood - could be more harmful to memory impairment and mood fluctuations such as depression.
Results: Here we show that pre-pubertal male rats (30 days old) treated with a high-fat diet (40%) for 8-months gained ~50% more weight when compared to controls, exhibited depression and anxiety-like behaviors but no memory impairment.

In this work, graphene oxide (GO) was synthesized by the modified Hummers method. The nanomaterial was characterized by FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, SEM, and pH at the point of zero charge. GO exhibited typical characteristics of graphene-based materials, indicating that graphite oxidation and exfoliation occurred successfully.

The early life (SE) causes high anxiety and chronic socialization abnormalities, revealed by a low preference for social novelty and deficit in social discrimination. This study investigated the involvement of the endocannabinoid system on the sociability in this model, due to its role in social motivation regulation. Male Wistar rats at postnatal day 9 were subjected to pilocarpine-induced neonatal SE and controls received saline.

These processes also generate substances that inhibit microbial metabolism, resulting in low conversion of sugars into bioproducts. To minimize this, in this work the sisal bagasse acid hydrolysate was detoxified using the activated carbon obtained from residues of the gasification of açaí endocarp.

The limited number of treatment options coupled with the increasing number of resistant microorganisms makes necessary the development of new non-toxic antifungal and antiprotozoal agents.
