Lateral ankle ligament injuries occur in connection with inversion traumas and are one of the most common injuries, both in the general population and among athletes. A lateral ankle ligament injury weakens the stabilising structures in the ankle and disposes the ankle joint to prolonged instability. Acute lateral ankle ligament injuries with no suspicion of fracture can be treated and followed up conservatively in the primary health service.

α-bungarotoxin is a large, 74 amino acid toxin containing five disulphide bridges, initially identified in the venom of snake. Like most large toxins, chemical synthesis of α-bungarotoxin is challenging, explaining why all previous reports use purified or recombinant α-bungarotoxin. Iron-sulfur (Fe-S) clusters are essential protein cofactors whose biosynthetic defects lead to severe diseases among which is Friedreich's ataxia caused by impaired expression of frataxin (FXN). Fe-S clusters are biosynthesized on the scaffold protein ISCU, with cysteine desulfurase NFS1 providing sulfur as persulfide and ferredoxin FDX2 supplying electrons, in a process stimulated by FXN but not clearly understood. Here, we report the breakdown of this process, made possible by removing a zinc ion in ISCU that hinders iron insertion and promotes non-physiological Fe-S cluster synthesis from free sulfide in vitro.

Background: End-stage coxarthrosis is increasingly common; however, limited evidence exists on the effect of direct lateral approach (DLA) and minimally invasive direct anterior approach (MIDA) on component placement in total hip arthroplasty (THA). High yields of cyclic peptide conjugates may be obtained in short reaction times using only a slight excess of the cyclopentenedione moiety under TEMPO catalysis and in the presence of LiCl.

The reaction between maleimides and resin-linked diene-polyamides allows the latter to be used in the preparation of conjugates. Conjugation takes place by reacting the insoluble, hydrophobic diene component either with water-soluble dienophiles or with dienophiles requiring mixtures of water and organic solvents. Experimental conditions can be adjusted to furnish the target conjugate in good yield with no need of adding large excesses of soluble reagent.

This manuscript reviews the possibilities offered by 2,5-dimethylfuran-protected maleimides. Suitably derivatized building blocks incorporating the exo Diels-Alder cycloadduct can be introduced at any position of oligonucleotides, peptide nucleic acids, peptides and peptoids, making use of standard solid-phase procedures. Maleimide deprotection takes place upon heating, which can be followed by either Michael-type or Diels-Alder click conjugation reactions.

We studied the incidence of greater trochanteric fractures at our department following THR. In all we examined 911 patients retrospectively and found the occurance of a greater trochanteric fracture to be 3%. Patients with fractures had significantly poorer outcome on Oxford Hip score, Pain VAS, Satisfaction VAS and EQ-5D compared to THR without fractures.

Abstract The emergence of the nontuberculosis mycobacteria (NTM) as clinically relevant pathogens has warranted the study of these ubiquitous organisms in the context of their likely environmental niche, the biofilm. We assayed the NTM bacterium Mycobacterium marinum strain 1218R, a fish outbreak isolate, for biofilm formation on different surfaces over time using three different methods. Using the MBEC system, biofilm development occurred continually over the 14-day culture period reaching a mature or stable biofilm state after 7 days postinoculation.

To further characterize carbohydrate physiology in grapevine flowers, we examined inflorescence autotrophy in the 'Gewurztraminer' and 'Pinot noir' cultivars, which differ in sensitivity to flower abscission. In both cultivars, positive net photosynthesis occurred in inflorescences. The rate of photosynthesis gradually decreased throughout flower development and there was no net carbon assimilation at fruit set.

The present study addresses the question whether metabolic dopamine can be immunocytochemically detected within non-dopaminergic catecholaminergic axonal fibers. For this purpose, confocal microscopy was used to analyze sections treated for the double fluorescence immunostaining of dopamine and either noradrenaline or phenylethanolamine-N- methyltransferase (the enzyme in adrenergic neurons that converts noradrenaline into adrenaline). Our data demonstrate that throughout the brain and spinal cord, the majority of the axonal fibers that reacted with the anti-phenylethanolamine-N-methyltransferase antibodies also exhibited faint to intense dopamine immunoreactivity.
