Here, we present an interdisciplinary study of the environmental, social and economic consequences of land-use transitions in a tropical smallholder landscape on Sumatra, Indonesia. We find widespread biodiversity-profit trade-offs resulting from land-use transitions from forest and agroforestry systems to rubber and oil palm monocultures, for 26,894 aboveground and belowground species and whole-ecosystem multidiversity.

Microelectrodes were used to measure simultaneously the effects of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) on membrane potential and cytosolic pH of corn coleoptile cells. IAA caused an initial depolarization followed by hyperpolarization, the latter displaying rhythmic oscillations. The extent of the changes in membrane potential was dependent on IAA concentration, and hyperpolarization, but not depolarization, could be detected with concentrations of IAA as low as 10 nM.

Elongation growth at rates equivalent to those obtained with indole-3-acetic acid was induced for about 1 h. Stimulation of the outwardly directed proton pump apparently occurred, since under the same conditions monensin induced membrane hyperpolarization of maize root rhizodermis cells.

A crude membrane fraction was isolated from corn coleoptiles and separated on non-linear sucrose density gradients. Separation of endoplasmic reticulum (NADH-cytochrome c reductase), mitochondria (cytochrome c oxidase), golgi (inosine diphosphatase), and plasma membranes (N-1-naphthylphthalamic acid-binding) was achieved.

Asbestos-vinyl tile floor panels were mopped with three types of chemical disinfectant product, as well as after contact, with the untreated control panel were prepared according to the manufacturer's label instructions. Similar floor panels were inoculated artificially with Staphylococcus aureus. RODAC (replicate organism detection and counting) surface sampling plates were pressed to the disinfectant-treated panels or to the untreated control panel and then immediately pressed to sampling sites on the artificially inoculated floor panels.

Significantly higher levels of uric acid in serum and urine together with increased urine volume and pH were observed in rats after portacaval end-to-side anastomosis in comparison to sham-operated and non-operated pair-fed controls. An increased supply of endogenous uric acid by reduced transformation of uric acid to allantoin and decreased uricase activity in the liver was assumed. Adaptation of enzyme activities of other metabolic pathways of the liver after PCA due to diminished blood and oxygen supply were described in previous experiments.
