We describe a mechanism whereby random noise can play a constructive role in the manifestation of a pattern, aperiodic rotations, that would otherwise be damped by internal dynamics. The mechanism is described physically in a theoretical model of overdamped particle motion in two dimensions with symmetric damping and a non-conservative force field driven by noise. Cyclic motion only occurs as a result of stochastic noise in this system.

Purpose: The visual evoked potential (VEP) provides a time series signal response to an external visual stimulus at the location of the visual cortex. The major VEP signal components, peak latency and amplitude, may be affected by disease processes. Additionally, the VEP contains fine detailed and non-periodic structure, of presently unclear relevance to normal function, which may be quantified using the fractal dimension.

We investigate the dynamics of high-aspect-ratio nanowires trapped axially in a single gradient force optical tweezers. A power spectrum analysis of the dynamics reveals a broad spectral resonance of the order of kHz with peak properties that are strongly dependent on the input trapping power. A dynamical model incorporating linear restoring optical forces, a nonconservative asymmetric coupling between translational and rotational degrees of freedom, viscous drag, and white noise provides an excellent fit to experimental observations.

Particle-tracking experiments focusing on virions or nanoparticles in mucus have measured mean-square displacements and reported diffusion coefficients that are orders of magnitude smaller than the diffusion coefficients of such particles in water. Accurate description of this subdiffusion is important to properly estimate the likelihood of virions traversing the mucus boundary layer and infecting cells in the epithelium. However, there are several candidate models for diffusion that can fit experimental measurements of mean-square displacements.

Measures of chromatic contrast sensitivity in children are lower than those of adults. This may be related to immaturities in signal processing at or near threshold. We have found that children's VEPs in response to low contrast supra-threshold chromatic stimuli are more intra-individually variable than those recorded from adults.

Whereas neuronal numbers are largely preserved in normal aging, subtle morphological changes occur in dendrites and spines, whose electrotonic consequences remain unexplored. We examined age-related morphological alterations in 2 types of pyramidal neurons contributing to working memory circuits in the macaque prefrontal cortex (PFC): neurons in the superior temporal cortex forming "long" projections to the PFC and "local" projection neurons within the PFC. Global dendritic mass homeostasis, measured by 3-dimensional scaling analysis, was conserved with aging in both neuron types.

To investigate the link between molecular structure, reactivity, and partitioning of oxygenated organic compounds in acidic aerosols, the uptake of three compounds found in the atmosphere, methyl vinyl ketone (MVK), methacrolein (MACR), and 2-methyl-3-butene-2-ol (MBO), by sulfuric acid solutions has been measured using a rotated wetted-wall reactor (RWW) coupled to a chemical ionization mass spectrometer (CIMS). MVK was found to partition reversibly into 20-75 wt % H(2)SO(4) solutions, and we report Henry's law coefficients between 20 and 7000 M atm(-1) over this range. A chemical reaction for MVK was likely responsible for the uptake observed for 80-96 wt % H(2)SO(4) solutions.

Subsequent to modeling of natural attenuation processes to predict contaminant trends and plume dynamics, monitoring data were used to evaluate the effectiveness of natural attenuation at reducing contaminant concentrations in groundwater at seven fuel-contaminated sites. Predicted and observed contaminant trends at seven sites were compared in order to empirically assess the accuracy of some fundamental model input parameters and assumptions. Most of the models developed for the study sites tended to overestimate plume migration distance, source persistence, and/or the time required for the benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, and xylenes (BTEX) plumes to attenuate.

Food-grade soybean oil (SoyOil) has been used to enhance in situ anaerobic bioremediation at sites contaminated with chlorinated ethenes (CEs). The abiotic interactions of SoyOil with the CEs may be significant and need to be better understood. The oil: water partition coefficients (Kp) of dissolved CEs into SoyOil were measured in batch tests and ranged from 22 to 1200 with increasing chlorination.

Chromatic contrast thresholds may be estimated from transient VEPs by measuring the peak-to-peak amplitude at a range of stimulus levels followed by extrapolation to zero amplitude. However, there have been reports of failure of this technique when applied to the transient chromatic VEP due to variability of amplitude, difficulties with component identification and poor correlation of amplitude with stimulus level. The aim of our study was to compare methods of transient VEP chromatic contrast threshold estimation in terms of success rate and comparison with psychophysical threshold.

Alteration in cardiac function is one of the hallmarks of diabetes and in late stage is manifested as a decrease in contractility. While it is established that the release of calcium ions from internal sarcoplasmic reticulum via type 2 ryanodine receptor calcium-release channels (RyR2) is vital for efficient contraction, the relationship between diabetes-induced decrease in cardiac performance and alterations in expression and/or function of RyR2 is not well delineated.
