Medical School Anatomy and Pathology Workshops for High School Students Enhance Learning and Provide Inspiration for Careers in Medicine.

"Anatomy and Pathology Workshop" is a cadaver-based outreach program that models medical education to large groups of high school students. This study was designed to evaluate the impact of this program on students' knowledge of anatomy and interest in biomedical science. A total of 144 high school students participated in the workshop in 2015.

A variant of the classical superficial brachioulnoradial artery: morphology and clinical significances.

We report a superficial brachioulnoradial artery (SBURA) presenting as a variant of the normal, originating from the proximal third of the right brachial artery of a 75-year-old female cadaver which bifurcated yielding a brachiointerosseous artery laterally and a SBURA medially, and the latter bifurcating 5 cm proximal to the elbow yielding a brachioradial artery laterally and the superficial brachioulnar artery medially, resulting in the formation of three instead of two brachial arteries as in the classical SBURA said to bifurcate at the elbow into the radial and ulnar arteries. Clinical implications of this variant are discussed.

Tungsten Carbide-Cobalt Nanoparticles Induce Reactive Oxygen Species, AKT, ERK, AP-1, NF-κB, VEGF, and Angiogenesis.

Powder mixtures of tungsten carbide and metallic cobalt (WC-Co) are widely used in various products. Nanoparticles are engineered structures with at least one dimension of 100 nm or smaller. WC-Co is known to be associated with lung injury and diseases.

Equivalence of students' scores on timed and untimed anatomy practical examinations.

Untimed examinations are popular with students because there is a perception that first impressions may be incorrect, and that difficult questions require more time for reflection. In this report, we tested the hypothesis that timed anatomy practical examinations are inherently more difficult than untimed examinations. Students in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Thomas Jefferson University were assessed on their understanding of anatomic relationships using multiple-choice questions.

Staining embryonic stem cells using monoclonal antibodies to stage-specific embryonic antigens.

Stage-specific embryonic antigens (SSEAs) are cell-surface molecules that exhibit lineage-restricted patterns of expression during development. These antigens provide useful markers for identifying embryonic stem cells and their differentiated derivatives. SSEA-1 provides a surface marker for mouse and human primordial germ cells and mouse embryonic stem cells.

Curricular reform may improve students' performance on externally administered comprehensive examinations.

Aim: To determine whether changes in the format of teaching pathology and the introduction of active learning principles can improve medical students' performance on external examinations and enhance clinical skills.

Method: The sophomore Pathology Course at Jefferson Medical College (JMC) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, was completely restructured in 1986, with greater emphasis placed on independent study, small group teaching, and case study discussion. We used the scores of JMC medical students on the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) Part I Examination to compare the performance of JMC students who completed their medical education before curricular change (entering classes 1982-1984) with the performance of subsequent generations of students who were taught according to the reformed curriculum (entering classes 1985-1988).

Strategies for teaching pathology to graduate students and allied health professionals.

Pathology is an essential course for many students in the biomedical sciences and allied health professions. These students learn the language of pathology and medicine, develop an appreciation for mechanisms of disease, and understand the close relationship between basic research and clinical medicine. We have developed 3 pathology courses to meet the needs of our undergraduates, graduate students, and allied health professionals.

Balancing traditional values in academic medicine with advances in science and technology.

Scientific discovery, population growth, and world commerce are converging to reshape medicine in unforeseen ways. Instead of responding passively to change we must embrace each challenge as an opportunity. Critical issues facing academic medicine today include a revolution in molecular biology and biotechnology, spiraling costs of health care, lack of consensus on a frame of reference for strategic planning (global versus local), and lack of appropriate methods of assessment (outcome analysis).
