Patterning materials such that they elicit a different cell response in different regions would have significant implications in fields such as implantable biomaterials, in vitro cell culture and tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Moreover, the ability to pattern polymers using inexpensive, currently available processes, without the need for adding proteins or other biochemical agents could lead to new opportunities in biomaterials research. The research reported here demonstrates that by combining the plasma surface treatments used to create commercial grade tissue culture treated polystyrene, with controlled hot embossing processes, that distinct regions can be created on a substrate that result in spatial control of endothelial cell adhesion and proliferation.

The impact of P-glycoprotein (MDR1, ABCB1) on drug disposition in the lungs as well as its presence and activity in in vitro respiratory drug absorption models remain controversial to date. Hence, we characterised MDR1 expression and the bidirectional transport of the common MDR1 probe (3)H-digoxin in air-liquid interfaced (ALI) layers of normal human bronchial epithelial (NHBE) cells and of the Calu-3 bronchial epithelial cell line at different passage numbers. Extended dynamic range pH-sensitive ratiometric nanosensors, capable of accurately mapping the full physiological pH range, have been developed and used to characterize the pH of the pharyngeal and intestinal lumen of Caenorhabditis elegans in real-time. Nanosensors, 40 nm in diameter, were prepared by conjugating pH-sensitive fluorophores, carboxyfluorescein (FAM) and Oregon Green (OG) in a 1:1 ratio, and a reference fluorophore, 5-(and-6)-carboxytetramethylrhodamine (TAMRA) to an inert polyacrylamide matrix. Accurate ratiometric pH measurements were calculated through determination of the fluorescence ratio between the pH-sensitive and reference fluorophores.

Fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) utilize cell surface heparan sulfate as a coreceptor in the assembly of signaling complexes with FGF-receptors on the plasma membrane. Here we undertake a complete thermodynamic characterization of the assembly of the FGF signaling complex using isothermal titration calorimetry. Heparin fragments of defined length are used as chemical analogs of the sulfated domains of heparan sulfate and examined for their ability to oligomerize FGF1.

In this review, we provide a synopsis of work on the epidemiologic evidence for prenatal infection in the etiology of schizophrenia and autism. In birth cohort studies conducted by our group and others, in utero exposure to infectious agents, prospectively obtained after biomarker assays of archived maternal sera and by obstetric records was related to an increased risk of schizophrenia. Thus far, it has been demonstrated that prenatal exposure to influenza, increased toxoplasma antibody, genital-reproductive infections, rubella, and other pathogens are associated with schizophrenia.

Background: Prenatal micronutrient deficiency has been linked to later development of schizophrenia among offspring; however, no study has specifically investigated the association between vitamin A and this disorder. Vitamin A is an essential nutrient which is required by the early embryo and fetus for gene expression and regulation, cell differentiation, proliferation and migration. Previous work suggests that vitamin A deficiency in the second trimester may be particularly relevant to the etiopathogenesis of neurobehavioral phenotypes some of which are observed in schizophrenia.
