A 19-year-old male presented with facial frostbite and severe oropharyngeal edema after prolonged riding of a snowmobile without any facial covering. The diffuse swelling eventually progressed to airway obstruction, requiring a surgical airway. No alternative explanation was found for his presentation, making this the first case found in the literature of airway obstruction secondary to environmental cold exposure.

Planetary rings are observed not only around giant planets, but also around small bodies such as the Centaur Chariklo and the dwarf planet Haumea. Up to now, all known dense rings were located close enough to their parent bodies, being inside the Roche limit, where tidal forces prevent material with reasonable densities from aggregating into a satellite. Here we report observations of an inhomogeneous ring around the trans-Neptunian body (50000) Quaoar.

El Niño has profound influences on ecosystem dynamics. However, we know little about how it shapes vertebrate faunal community composition over centennial time scales, and this limits our ability to forecast change under projections of future El Niño events. On the basis of correlations between geological records of past El Niño frequency and the species composition of bird and fish remains from a Baja California bone deposit that spans the past 12,000 years, we documented marked faunal restructuring when major El Niño events occurred more than five times per century.

Laboratory tests for the accurate and rapid identification of SARS-CoV-2 variants can potentially guide the treatment of COVID-19 patients and inform infection control and public health surveillance efforts. Here, we present the development and validation of a rapid COVID-19 variant DETECTR assay incorporating loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) followed by CRISPR-Cas12 based identification of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) mutations in the SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) gene. This assay targets the L452R, E484K/Q/A, and N501Y mutations, at least one of which is found in nearly all major variants.

In natural environments, bacteria are frequently exposed to sub-lethal levels of DNA damage, which leads to the induction of a stress response (the SOS response in Escherichia coli). Natural environments also vary in nutrient availability, resulting in distinct physiological changes in bacteria, which may have direct implications on their capacity to repair their chromosomes. Here, we evaluated the impact of varying the nutrient availability on the expression of the SOS response induced by chronic sub-lethal DNA damage in E.

Article Synopsis
  • Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the capitellum is treated with marrow stimulation techniques, and MRI is used to evaluate the healing of cartilage but lacks a formal assessment system for this specific condition.
  • This study analyzed postoperative MRI results of repair cartilage in patients with capitellar OCD and compared outcomes between those who were symptomatic and asymptomatic, using a classification system for cartilage repair tissue.
  • The findings showed that 59% of cartilage defects were completely filled, but many had surface irregularities, with no significant differences between symptomatic and asymptomatic patients, and indicated challenges in correlating clinical scores with MRI results due to a small sample size.

The programmable nature of sequence-specific targeting by CRISPR-Cas nucleases has revolutionized a wide range of genomic applications and is now emerging as a method for nucleic acid detection. We explore how the diversity of CRISPR systems and their fundamental mechanisms have given rise to a wave of new methods for target recognition and readout. These cross-disciplinary advances found at the intersection of CRISPR biology and engineering have led to the ability to rapidly generate solutions for emerging global challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic.

Purpose: Outcome measures that lack sensitivity for the detection of clinical changes early after surgery for capitellar osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) make it difficult to determine the optimal treatment for these defects. We sought to evaluate the early responsiveness of patient-reported outcomes measurement information system (PROMIS) scores in a cohort of patients operatively treated for capitellar OCD.

Methods: Four PROMIS questionnaires (mobility, upper extremity [UE], pain interference, and peer relations) were electronically administered to patients treated for capitellar OCD at a single tertiary academic medical center between January 1, 2015, and July 1, 2018.

The first measurement of longitudinal decorrelations of harmonic flow amplitudes v_{n} for n=2-4 in Xe+Xe collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.44  TeV is obtained using 3  μb^{-1} of data with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The decorrelation signal for v_{3} and v_{4} is found to be nearly independent of collision centrality and transverse momentum (p_{T}) requirements on final-state particles, but for v_{2} a strong centrality and p_{T} dependence is seen.

Purpose: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a helpful tool in the evaluation of osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the humeral capitellum. The relationship between MRI appearance and clinically relevant intraoperative findings is incompletely understood. The goal of this study was to evaluate capitellar OCD lesions via preoperative MRI and to determine its accuracy in predicting lesion characteristics including lesion size and capitellar lateral wall integrity.

There is considerable interest in biomedical applications of quantum dot (QD) nanoparticles, in particular their use as imaging agents for diagnostic applications. In order to investigate the in vivo biodistribution and the potential toxicity of quantum dots (QDs), it is crucial to develop pharmacokinetic (PK) models as basis for prediction of QDs exposure profiles over time. Here, we investigated the in vivo biodistribution of novel indium-based QDs in mice for up to three months after intravenous administration and subsequently developed a translational population PK model to scale findings to humans.

Māori experience poorer health statistics in terms of cancer incidence and mortality compared to non-Māori. For prostate cancer, Māori men are less likely than non-Māori men to be diagnosed with prostate cancer, but those that are diagnosed are much more likely to die of the disease than non-Māori men resulting in an excess mortality rate in Māori men compared with non-Māori. A review of the literature included a review of the epidemiology of prostate cancer; of screening; of access to healthcare and of treatment modalities.

Loss of the von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) tumor suppressor is a hallmark feature of renal clear cell carcinoma. VHL inactivation results in the constitutive activation of the hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) HIF-1 and HIF-2 and their downstream targets, including the proangiogenic factors VEGF and PDGF. However, antiangiogenic agents and HIF-2 inhibitors have limited efficacy in cancer therapy due to the development of resistance.

The prevalence of hadronic jets at the LHC requires that a deep understanding of jet formation and structure is achieved in order to reach the highest levels of experimental and theoretical precision. There have been many measurements of jet substructure at the LHC and previous colliders, but the targeted observables mix physical effects from various origins. Based on a recent proposal to factorize physical effects, this Letter presents a double-differential cross-section measurement of the Lund jet plane using 139  fb^{-1} of sqrt[s]=13  TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector using jets with transverse momentum above 675 GeV.
