Sofosbuvir/Velpatasvir Pharmacokinetics, Safety, and Efficacy in Pregnant People with Hepatitis C Virus.

Background: Treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV) during pregnancy can cure maternal HCV and prevent perinatal HCV transmission. The primary objective was to compare the pharmacokinetics (PK) of sofosbuvir/velpatasvir (SOF/VEL) in pregnant versus nonpregnant people.

Methods: Pregnant people with chronic HCV infection were enrolled between 23-25 weeks' gestation and were provided SOF/VEL daily for 12 weeks.

MED-EL Bonebridge implantation in pediatric patients age 11 Years and younger: Is it safe and effective?

Objective: To present our experience with off-label MED-EL Bonebridge implantation in pediatric patients younger than 12 years of age and compare outcomes to pediatric patients 12 years and older.

Methods: Pediatric patients who underwent Bonebridge implantation were included in a retrospective cohort study and were categorized by off-label use (<12 years) and ≥12 years at time of bone conduction implantation (BCI). Hearing outcomes were collected after implant activation, which was typically 4-8 weeks post-implantation.

Measuring the association between diagnostic errors and neighborhood disadvantage.

Patients who reside in areas of high neighborhood disadvantage have poorer health outcomes; the mechanisms for this disparity are complex. We sought to determine if there was an association between neighborhood disadvantage and diagnostic error among a cohort of adult inpatients who experienced either an ICU transfer or in-hospital death. Using a sample of 527 patients from seven geographically diverse academic medical systems, we compared diagnostic error rates to patients' neighborhood disadvantage levels as measured by the Area Deprivation Index, a validated composite measure of socioeconomic status.

Phenotypic Characterization of Subtype A and Recombinant AC Transmitted/Founder Viruses from a Rwandan HIV-1 Heterosexual Transmission Cohort.

HIV-1 subtypes have distinct geographical distributions, with subtypes A, C, and D and inter-subtype recombinants circulating in sub-Saharan Africa. Historically, individuals living with subtype A viruses exhibit slower CD4 decline and progression to AIDS diagnosis. Despite this, there are few authentic infectious molecular clones (IMCs) of subtype A or AC recombinant transmitted founder (TF) viruses with which to investigate viral impacts on pathogenesis.

Scoping review of review methodologies used for guiding evidence-based practice in critical care: a protocol.

Introduction: A literature review provides a synthesis on a selection of papers about a specific topic. This is used by health practitioners in critical care as in other specialities when making clinical practice decisions. The task of knowledge transfer through the review process of scientific papers involves a variety of methodologies with differing expectations on the quality and rigour that is applied.

Antigen-specific T cell frequency and phenotype mirrors disease activity in DRB1*04:04+ rheumatoid arthritis patients.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is associated with high-risk HLA class II alleles known as the "RA shared epitope." Among prevalent shared epitope alleles, study of DRB1*04:04 has been limited. To define relevant epitopes, we identified citrullinated peptide sequences from synovial antigens that were predicted to bind to HLA-DRB1*04:04 and utilized a systematic approach to confirm their binding and assess their recognition by CD4 T cells.

Cation reactivity inhibits perovskite degradation in efficient and stable solar modules.

Perovskite solar modules (PSMs) show outstanding power conversion efficiencies (PCEs), but long-term operational stability remains problematic. We show that incorporating -dimethylmethyleneiminium chloride into the perovskite precursor solution formed dimethylammonium cation and that previously unobserved methyl tetrahydrotriazinium ([MTTZ]) cation effectively improved perovskite film. The in situ formation of [MTTZ] cation increased the formation energy of iodine vacancies and enhanced the migration energy barrier of iodide and cesium ions, which suppressed nonradiative recombination, thermal decomposition, and phase segregation processes.

Environmental sustainability in cardiovascular practice: current challenges and future directions.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with a substantial amount of health-care resources targeted towards its diagnosis and management. Environmental sustainability in cardiovascular care can have an important role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and pollution and could be beneficial for improving health metrics and societal well-being and minimizing the cost of health care. In this Review, we discuss the motivations and frameworks for sustainable cardiovascular care with an emphasis on the reduction of the climate-related and environmental effects of cardiovascular care.

Health perceptions of adverse weather in older adults in England: analysis of 2019/20 survey data.

Risks to older adults (OA) (aged 65+ years) associated with hot and cold weather in the UK are well-documented. The study aim is to explore OA perception of health risks from high and low temperatures, health-protective measures undertaken, and implications for public health messaging. In 2019/20, Ipsos MORI conducted face-to-face surveys with OA in England (n = 461 cold weather survey, n = 452 hot weather survey).

Achieving gigawatt-scale green hydrogen production and seasonal storage at industrial locations across the U.S.

Onsite production of gigawatt-scale wind- and solar-sourced hydrogen (H) at industrial locations depends on the ability to store and deliver otherwise-curtailed H during times of power shortages. Thousands of tonnes of H will require storage in regions where subsurface storage is scarce, which may only be possible using liquid organic H carriers. We evaluate aboveground system with a focus on providing technical insights into toluene/methylcyclohexane (TOL/MCH) storage systems in locations suitable for gigawatt-scale wind- and solar-powered electrolyzer systems in the United States.

Germline Variants in Patients Affected by Both Uveal and Cutaneous Melanoma.

Uveal melanoma (UM) and nonacral cutaneous melanoma (CM) are distinct entities with varied genetic landscapes despite both arising from melanocytes. There are, however, similarities in that they most frequently affect people of European ancestry, and high penetrance germline variants in BAP1, POT1 and CDKN2A have been shown to predispose to both UM and CM. This study aims to further explore germline variants in patients affected by both UM and CM, shedding light on the underlying genetic mechanism causing these diseases.

Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) is an environmental contaminant due to its use as a flame retardant in a variety of applications ranging from building insulation, furniture upholstery, and housing for appliances and electronics. HBCD is found in wildlife, human breastmilk, and serum. Interleukin 1-beta (IL-1β) and interleukin 6 (IL-6) are pro-inflammatory cytokines, whose dysregulation is associated with chronic inflammation and the pathologies that result, such as tumor growth, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, and multiple sclerosis.

Adult-onset asthma morbidity and related economic costs in middle age due to intentional chronic absenteeism in high school: An epidemiologic study using the national longitudinal survey of youth 1979 data.

Objective: Many authors examined the individual and societal impact of school absenteeism. Nevertheless, no empirical study has looked at the potential direct correlation between deliberate school absences and chronic illnesses in mid-adulthood. Our goal is to investigate any potential direct links between purposeful school absences and adult-onset asthma in middle age, as well as measure any associated costs of asthma.

Iris melanoma in an Australian cohort.

Background: To report the clinicopathological features and epidemiology of iris melanoma in Queensland, Australia.

Methods: This was a retrospective study of 86 patients with iris melanoma treated between 2001 and 2022 at the Queensland Ocular Oncology Service, Brisbane, Australia. Main outcome measures included demographics, clinical and phenotypic features, age-adjusted incidence and relative survival.

The effect of an odd-one-out visual search task on attentional bias, body size adaptation, and body dissatisfaction.

Body image disturbance is a both a risk factor for, and a symptom of, many eating disorders and refers to the misperception of and dissatisfaction with one's own body. Women with high body dissatisfaction have been shown to direct more attention to low body mass index (BMI) bodies, which results in the overestimation of body size via body size adaptation. Therefore, attention may have a causal role in body image disturbance.
