Graphene-based materials (GBMs) hold strong promise to restore the spinal cord microenvironment and promote functional recovery after spinal cord injury (SCI). Nanocomposites consisting of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and adipose tissue-derived extracellular matrix (adECM) are known to promote neuronal growth in vitro and to evoke a biocompatible response in vivo when implanted on top of the intact spinal cord. In this study, pristine adECM and adECM-rGO nanocomposites are implanted directly after hemisection SCI in rats.

Article Synopsis
  • Oral focus screening before hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is critical, yet the impact of chronic dental issues on post-transplant health is not well understood.
  • A study of 500 patients highlighted that nearly half had untreated chronic dental problems, and those with three or more issues stayed in the hospital five days longer on average.
  • The research found that while having multiple dental foci increased hospital length of stay, it did not significantly affect early mortality rates post-HCT.

Introduction: Implant-supported removable complete overdentures (IODs) are a common treatment in case of edentulism and malfunctioning of the conventional denture. Manufacturing IODs in a conventional way (C-IODs) is time-consuming, but in a digital workflow, this can be done in three sessions. Digitally produced IODs (3D-IODs) are also more advantageous than C-IODs because lost or broken 3D-IODs can be swiftly reproduced as the digital design is always available.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the salivary flow rates, perceived oral dryness, and dental caries in patients five years after undergoing hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT).
  • A total of 39 survivors participated, with results showing a mean unstimulated saliva flow rate of 0.36 mL/min and a stimulated flow rate of 1.02 mL/min, while 73% reported experiencing some level of oral dryness.
  • The findings indicated that there was a slight increase in dental treatments needed post-HCT, with survivors undergoing an average of three treatments over five years following the transplant, although these changes were non-significant when compared to pre-transplant metrics.

In 30 patients (average age 38 ± 8 years, 77% male, 23% female) with intra-oral scans made at intake and after 3 years, tooth wear progression was measured. With the aid of GeoMagic to superimpose the scans, the maximum difference in height of 64 surfaces was measured per surface. A large variation was found in progression rates between patients, between various teeth in a single mouth, and between surfaces on a single tooth.

Background: The roll-out of antiretroviral medicines has improved life expectancy in people living with HIV (PLHIV). This has resulted in more patients being hospitalised for non-communicable diseases, increasing risk for medication errors (MEs). Pharmacists, through medication reconciliation, may identify and reduce MEs in this population.

Background: Studies on oral health status of adults are sparse and rarely include data on endodontic treatment and trauma. In the military, those data are available because recruits are routinely assessed with a clinical and radiological examination at the start of their career. This study aimed to identify differences in oral health status of Dutch Armed Forces recruits between cohorts, departments, sex, age and rank, with DMF-T, endodontic treatment and dental trauma as outcome measures.

Dental materials are challenged by wear processes in the oral environment and should be evaluated in laboratory tests prior to clinical use. Many laboratory wear-testing devices are high-cost investments and not available for cross-centre comparisons. The 'Rub&Roll' wear machine enables controlled application of force, chemical and mechanical loading, but the initial design was not able to test against rigid antagonist materials.
