Surveillance of adverse events following immunisation in Australia, COVID-19 vaccines, 2021.

This report summarises Australia's spontaneous (passive) surveillance data for adverse events following immunisation (AEFI) for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines in 2021 reported to the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). The TGA strongly promoted and facilitated adverse event reporting in preparation for, and during, the COVID-19 vaccine rollout as a core component of the most intensive vaccine safety monitoring ever conducted in Australia. There were 111,348 AEFI reports for COVID-19 vaccines administered in 2021, an annual AEFI reporting rate of 271.

This report summarises Australia's spontaneous surveillance data for adverse events following immunisation (AEFI) for 2021 reported to the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and describes reporting trends over the 22-year period 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2021. This report excludes AEFI reports featuring pandemic coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines, which are reported separately. There were 3,452 AEFI reports for non-COVID-19 vaccines administered in 2021, an annual AEFI reporting rate of 13.

A novel hypervariable variable number tandem repeat in the dopamine transporter gene ().

The dopamine transporter gene, , has received substantial attention in genetic association studies of various phenotypes. Although some variable number tandem repeats (VNTRs) present in have been tested in genetic association studies, results have not been consistent. VNTRs in that have not been examined genetically were characterized.

The Submillimeter Rotational Spectrum of Ethylene Glycol up to 890 GHz and Application to ALMA Band 10 Spectral Line Data of NGC 6334I.

The rotational spectrum of the most stable conformer of ethylene glycol (HO(CH)OH) has been recorded between 360-890 GHz using a frequency-modulation submillimeter spectrometer. The refinement and extension of the spectroscopic parameters over previous efforts provide predicted catalog frequencies for ethylene glycol with sufficient accuracy for comparison to high-frequency astronomical data. The improvement in the cataloged line positions, and the need for improved accuracy enabled by high-frequency laboratory work, is demonstrated by an analysis of ethylene glycol emission at 890 GHz in the high-mass star-forming region NGC 6334I in ALMA Band 10 observations.

Interrater Reliability of the Revised Cognitive Performance Test (CPT): Assessing Cognition in People With Neurocognitive Disorders.

The rigor of occupation-based standardized assessments that rely on observational scoring procedures depends on proven reliability among test administrators. This study measured interrater reliability of the Cognitive Performance Test (CPT), a standardized, occupation-based assessment that measures cognitive-functional capacity in older adults with neurocognitive disorders. To capture a range of experience among test administrators, two sets of raters-four expert and three novice-scored video recordings of 10 patients administered the CPT.

74 MHz nonthermal emission from molecular clouds: evidence for a cosmic ray dominated region at the galactic center.

We present 74 MHz radio continuum observations of the Galactic center region. These measurements show nonthermal radio emission arising from molecular clouds that is unaffected by free–free absorption along the line of sight. We focus on one cloud, G0.

An actively accreting massive black hole in the dwarf starburst galaxy Henize 2-10.

Supermassive black holes are now thought to lie at the heart of every giant galaxy with a spheroidal component, including our own Milky Way. The birth and growth of the first 'seed' black holes in the earlier Universe, however, is observationally unconstrained and we are only beginning to piece together a scenario for their subsequent evolution. Here we report that the nearby dwarf starburst galaxy Henize 2-10 (refs 5 and 6) contains a compact radio source at the dynamical centre of the galaxy that is spatially coincident with a hard X-ray source.

Family caregivers of older relatives: ways of coping and change in distress.

The aim of this secondary analysis was to examine the relationships between the ways in which caregivers coped with caregiving stressors and their experience of distress over time. Three coping subscales were derived from the Carers' Assessment of Management Index (CAMI) coping scale: "maintaining balance", "focusing on caregiving" and "avoidance". A proportional (relative) scoring technique was applied.

The effects of ethanol on CNS development in the chick embryo.

Human and animal studies show that the central nervous system (CNS) is particularly vulnerable to developmental exposure to alcohol across all stages of development. New critical periods of ethanol sensitivity continue to be defined. The aim of this study was to further examine the stage-specific effects of ethanol on CNS development using a relatively simple programme of neuronal migration and differentiation, the chick embryo spinal cord, and treating at the immediate post-neurulation stage.

Clinical-outcome-based demand management in health services.

This paper uses the UK National Health Service as a case study to suggest techniques for system-based demand management, which aims to control demand and costs whilst maintaining the cost-effectiveness of the system.

The disclosure of a diagnosis of an autistic spectrum disorder: determinants of satisfaction in a sample of Scottish parents.

Satisfaction with disclosure of the diagnosis of an autistic spectrum disorder was investigated using a self-report questionnaire completed by 126 parents. On a rating of satisfaction, 55 percent indicated that they were satisfied or very satisfied with the disclosure. Parents were more likely to be satisfied if they gave positive ratings to the manner of the professional and the quality of the information provided; if they had been given written information and the opportunity to ask questions; and if their early suspicions had been accepted by professionals.

Do out-of-hours co-operatives improve general practitioners' health?

General practitioners (GPs) have been found to have a higher level of anxiety and depression then hospital managers and consultants. In 1995 and 1998, we surveyed GPs in Buckinghamshire. We found that the development of out-of-hours co-operatives was an important factor in the improvement in GPs' health status.

Measuring the effectiveness of cataract surgery: the reliability and validity of a visual function outcomes instrument.

Aims: To assess test-retest reliability and validity of the "TyPE" patient self assessed visual function questionnaire, as part of a study in two hospitals measuring the effectiveness of cataract surgery. The American TyPE questionnaire had minor adaptations made for use in Britain.

Methods: Test-retest reliability was assessed on 63 out of 378 adult cataract surgery patients in the study, using Spearman correlation coefficients and kappa coefficients of agreement.

Design: Prospective cross sectional survey and cost description of patient contacts with out of hours services.
