Metaproteomic analysis of microbiome post-translation modifications (PTMm) is challenging, and little is known about the effects of inflammation on the bacterial PTM landscape in IBD. Here, we adapted and optimised fluorescence in situ hybridisation-flow cytometry (FISH-FC) to study microbiome-wide tyrosine phosphorylation (p-Tyr) in children with and without inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Microbial p-Tyr signal was significantly higher in children with IBD, compared to those without.

Understanding species distribution across habitats and environmental variables is important to inform area-based management. However, observational data are often lacking, particularly from developing countries, hindering effective conservation design. One such data-poor area is the Gulf of Guinea, an understudied and biodiverse region where coastal waters play a critical role in coastal livelihoods.

  • Aberrant Wnt signaling is linked to advanced prostate cancer, but its genetic impact on patients is still uncertain.
  • A study analyzed data from the PROMISE database, finding that 12.9% of patients had Wnt alterations which were associated with significantly higher rates of liver and lung metastases compared to those without these alterations.
  • Despite the increased prevalence of other genetic mutations in Wnt-altered patients, there were no significant differences in overall survival or treatment outcomes between groups.

Background: Greater quadriceps strength symmetry is associated with better outcomes after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). Isometric and isokinetic assessments of quadriceps strength inform therapeutic exercise prescription and return-to-sport decisions. It is unclear whether isometric and isokinetic measures provide similar information post-ACLR.

Background: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is an evidence-based, guideline-recommended intervention for patients recovering from a cardiac event, surgery or procedure that improves morbidity, mortality, and functional status. CR is traditionally provided in-center, which limits access and engagement, most notably among underrepresented racial and ethnic groups due to barriers including cost, scheduling, and transportation access. This study is designed to evaluate the Corrie Hybrid CR, a technology-based, multicomponent health equity-focused intervention as an alternative to traditional in-center CR among patients recovering from a cardiac event, surgery, or procedure compared with usual care alone.

Sea turtles are vulnerable to climate change since their reproductive output is influenced by incubating temperatures, with warmer temperatures causing lower hatching success and increased feminization of embryos. Their ability to cope with projected increases in ambient temperatures will depend on their capacity to adapt to shifts in climatic regimes. Here, we assessed the extent to which phenological shifts could mitigate impacts from increases in ambient temperatures (from 1.

The COVID-19 pandemic compounded isolation for patients through social distancing measures and staff shortages. We were concerned about the impact of COVID-19 on the quality of care provided at end-of-life in 2021 in a national cancer centre, and instigated the first ever review of the care of the dying. Quality of care was assessed retrospectively using a validated instrument developed by the United Kingdom's National Quality Board.

Article Synopsis
  • Pediatric ulcerative colitis (UC) is generally diagnosed more severely in children than in adults, and tofacitinib, a medication used since 2018, has limited data on its effectiveness for this age group.
  • A retrospective study examined the outcomes of tofacitinib treatment at a national center in Ireland, analyzing clinical characteristics and response over time in pediatric patients with UC.
  • Of 15 children studied, 8 achieved clinical remission after starting tofacitinib, showing a significant decrease in Pediatric Ulcerative Colitis Activity Index (PUCAI) scores from baseline, with no notable differences in outcomes between those receiving it alone versus those on a combination of therapies.

is the second official aim of the current UN Ocean Decade (2021 to 2030) calling for the identification and protection of critical marine habitats. However, data to inform policy are often lacking altogether or confined to recent times, preventing the establishment of long-term baselines. The unique insights gained from combining bioarchaeology (palaeoproteomics, stable isotope analysis) with contemporary data (from satellite tracking) identified habitats which sea turtles have been using in the Eastern Mediterranean over five millennia.

As climate-related impacts threaten marine biodiversity globally, it is important to adjust conservation efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change. Translating scientific knowledge into practical management, however, is often complicated due to resource, economic and policy constraints, generating a knowledge-action gap. To develop potential solutions for marine turtle conservation, we explored the perceptions of key actors across 18 countries in the Mediterranean.

A man in his 50s with metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer, receiving androgen deprivation therapy and abiraterone acetate/prednisone, presented with an uncontrollable 'Irish brogue' accent despite no Irish background, consistent with foreign accent syndrome (FAS). He had no neurological examination abnormalities, psychiatric history or MRI of the brain abnormalities at symptom onset. Imaging revealed progression of his prostate cancer, despite undetectable prostate-specific antigen levels.

Lupus erythematosus tumidus (LET) is a rare photosensitive der-matosis that was considered a subtype of chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE); however, its clinical course and favorable prognosis led to its reclassification into another category called intermittent CLE. Although known for more than 100 years, LET's association with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), autoantibody profile, and disease prognosis is not well characterized. The purpose of this study was to describe the demographics, clinical characteristics, autoantibody profile, comorbidities, and treatment of LET.

Due to changing environmental conditions, many species will have to migrate or occupy new suitable areas to avoid potential extinction in the current biodiversity crisis. Long-lived animals are especially vulnerable and ex-situ conservation actions can provide solutions through assisted colonisations. However, there is little empirical evidence on the process of founding new populations for such species or the feasibility of assisted colonisations as a viable conservation measure.

Colonially breeding birds and mammals form some of the largest gatherings of apex predators in the natural world and have provided model systems for studying mechanisms of population regulation in animals. According to one influential hypothesis, intense competition for food among large numbers of spatially constrained foragers should result in a zone of prey depletion surrounding such colonies, ultimately limiting their size. However, while indirect and theoretical support for this phenomenon, known as "Ashmole's halo," has steadily accumulated, direct evidence remains exceptionally scarce.
