Background: Transfusion demand is high in liver transplantation (LT), and thus RhD-positive (RhD+) red blood cell concentrates (RBCs) are sometimes given to RhD-negative (RhD-) patients. Due to immunosuppression, these patients rarely produce anti-D. We investigated the rate of anti-D formation in RhD- patients undergoing LT who were transfused with RhD+ RBCs as well as the number of transfused RhD- and RhD+ RBCs.

Background: Dual-layer stents have fallen into disrepute after several studies reported high rates of in-stent occlusions in acute stroke treatments. The CGuard stent is a new-generation hybrid dual-layer stent that has been designed to provide less thrombogenicity and to prevent peri- and postinterventional emboli. The aim of the study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the CGuard stent for the acute treatment of occlusion or high-grade stenosis of the extracranial internal carotid artery (ICA) in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) with and without concomitant intracranial large vessel occlusion (LVO).

Diffusion-based tractography in the optic nerve requires sampling strategies assisted by anatomical landmark information (regions of interest [ROIs]). We aimed to investigate the feasibility of expert-placed, high-resolution T1-weighted ROI-data transfer onto lower spatial resolution diffusion-weighted images. Slab volumes from 20 volunteers were acquired and preprocessed including distortion bias correction and artifact reduction.

Article Synopsis
  • Physiological wound healing in the cornea is a complex, multifactorial process crucial for maintaining its integrity and function, aiming to prevent light-scattering scars.
  • Improper wound healing can lead to significant issues like corneal fibrosis and loss of optical clarity, potentially resulting in reduced vision or blindness.
  • Understanding the mechanisms and available treatments—ranging from topical therapies to surgical options—is vital for addressing corneal wound healing disorders and preventing long-term damage.

Emerging from the development of single-energy Computed Tomography (CT) and Dual-Energy Computed Tomography, Multi-Energy Computed Tomography (MECT) is a promising tool allowing advanced material and tissue decomposition and thereby enabling the use of multiple contrast materials in preclinical research. The scope of this work was to evaluate whether a usual preclinical micro-CT system is applicable for the decomposition of different materials using MECT together with a matrix-inversion method and how different changes of the measurement-environment affect the results. A matrix-inversion based algorithm to differentiate up to five materials (iodine, iron, barium, gadolinium, residual material) by applying four different acceleration voltages/energy levels was established.

Background And Objectives: Serologic typing with monoclonal anti-D is mandatory for RHD antigen determination before transfusion, but due to aberrant (weak or partial) variants of RHD, results may be ambiguous and molecular RHD-typing is required. Before that, RHD-negative (RHD -) red blood cells concentrates (RBCs) shall be transfused to avoid anti-D formation, which probably leads to wastage of RHD - RBCs. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: All patients with ambiguous results in serologic RHD-typing and molecular RHD-typing were assessed retrospectively.

Rationale And Objectives: Ruptured intracranial aneurysms (IAs) are the leading cause for atraumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage. In case of aneurysm rupture, patients may face life-threatening complications and require aneurysm occlusion. Detection of the aneurysm in computed tomography (CT) imaging is therefore essential for patient outcome.

While several recent studies suggest that approximately 1 in 6 young people in Switzerland are part of the rainbow diversity, a high proportion of health professionals have never had a course on LGBTIQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, questioning or other) health. This situation leads to significant gaps in the medical care of LGBTIQ+ persons as well as difficulties in accessing equitable, culturally appropriate and quality care. This article presents the ambitious and novel e-learning project I-CARE (Improving Care and Access for Rainbow Equity) which should contribute, from the end of this year, to filling the current gaps in the undergraduate and continuing education of health professionals.

(1) Background: To predict clinical outcomes in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) and delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) by assessment of the cerebral perfusion using a 2D perfusion angiography (2DPA) time-contrast agent (CA) concentration model. (2) Methods: Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) data sets of n = 26 subjects were acquired and post-processed focusing on changes in contrast density using a time-concentration model at three time points: (i) initial presentation with SAH (T0); (ii) vasospasm-associated acute clinical impairment (T1); and (iii) directly after endovascular treatment (T2) of SAH-associated large vessel vasospasm (LVV), which resulted in n = 78 data sets. Maximum slope (MS in SI/ms), time-to-peak (TTP in ms), and maximum amplitude of a CA bolus (dSI) were measured in brain parenchyma using regions of interest (ROIs).

In the assessment of adult attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms, the diagnostic value of neuropsychological testing is limited. Partly, this is due to the rather low ecological validity of traditional neuropsychological tests, which usually present abstract stimuli on a computer screen. A potential remedy for this shortcoming might be the use of virtual reality (VR), which enables a more realistic and complex, yet still standardized test environment.

Knowledge of the accurate kinematics of total hip arthroplasty (THA) during activities of daily living can potentially improve the or computational wear and impingement prediction of hip implants. Fluoroscopy- based techniques provide more accurate kinematics compared to skin marker-based motion capture, which is affected by the soft tissue artefact. To date, stationary fluoroscopic machines allowed the measurement of only restricted movements, or only a portion of the whole motion cycle.

As one of the most state-of-the-art procedures for retinal and choroidal imaging, ultra-widefield optical coherence tomography (UWF-OCT) offers significant gains in terms of information pertaining to peripheral retinal lesions and their differential diagnoses. In particular, it enables the presence of minimal accumulations of subretinal fluid to be assessed in detail and then documented. It also enables choroidal expansion of choroidal lesions to be precisely measured.

Objective: The Allan-Herndon-Dudley syndrome (AHDS) is a severe disease caused by dysfunctional central thyroid hormone transport due to functional loss of the monocarboxylate transporter 8 (MCT8). In this study, we assessed whether mice with concomitant deletion of the thyroid hormone transporters Mct8 and the organic anion transporting polypeptide (Oatp1c1) represent a valid preclinical model organism for the AHDS.

Methods: We generated and metabolically characterized a new CRISPR/Cas9 generated Mct8/Oatp1c1 double-knockout (dKO) mouse line for the clinical features observed in patients with AHDS.

Hybridisation-based targeted enrichment is a widely used and well-established technique in high-throughput second-generation short-read sequencing. Despite the high potential to genetically resolve highly repetitive and variable genomic sequences by, for example PacBio third-generation sequencing, targeted enrichment for long fragments has not yet established the same high-throughput due to currently existing complex workflows and technological dependencies. We here describe a scalable targeted enrichment protocol for fragment sizes of >7 kb.
