Background: In COPD patients with severe right-sided emphysema, complete major and incomplete minor fissure, implantation of one-way valves in both the right upper (RUL) and middle lobes (ML) is a possible approach for endoscopic lung volume reduction. The aim of this retrospective analysis was to evaluate the response to therapy and the complication rate at 90 days (90d-FU) after combined RUL-ML valve implantation.

Methods: This retrospective, monocentric study included all patients from the Thoraxklinik Heidelberg who underwent RUL-ML valve treatment between 2012 and 2023 with available follow-up data.

We present a study on nanoscale skyrmionic spin textures in [Formula: see text], a rare-earth complex noncollinear ferromagnet. We confirm, using X-ray microscopy, that [Formula: see text] can host lattices of metastable skyrmion bubbles at room temperature in the absence of a magnetic field, after applying a suitable field cooling protocol. The skyrmion bubbles are robust against temperature changes from room temperature to 330 K.

Secretion of high-value proteins and enzymes is fundamental to the synthetic biology economy, allowing continuous fermentation during production and protein purification without cell lysis. Most eukaryotic protein secretion is encoded by an N-terminal signal peptide (SP); however, the strong impact of SP sequence variation on the secretion efficiency of a given protein is not well defined. Despite high natural SP sequence diversity, most recombinant protein secretion systems use only a few well-characterised SPs.

As a reliable alternative to animal testing in cardiovascular research, it is crucial to improve differentiation of immortalized cell lines. In this study, we focused on optimizing the differentiation efficiency of the H9c2 cell line into cardiomyocytes using a high-throughput, automated image processing approach. While previous studies used protocols involving retinoic acid to enhance cardiac differentiation, we applied a simplified medium composition that results in higher differentiation rates.

Article Synopsis
  • The ileovesicostomy (IV) is a surgical option for children with bladder dysfunction who can't manage other treatments, but long-term outcomes weren't well studied before this research.
  • A retrospective review of patient records at a children's hospital showed a low rate of complications (0.11 per year) over an average follow-up of 6.4 years, with most complications occurring much later (average 84 months).
  • The study concludes that IV not only presents a low risk of surgical issues but also helps preserve kidney function, although it has limitations like a small sample size and being retrospective.

Ancient whole-genome duplications are believed to facilitate novelty and adaptation by providing the raw fuel for new genes. However, it is unclear how recent whole-genome duplications may contribute to evolvability within recent polyploids. Hybridization accompanying some whole-genome duplications may combine divergent gene content among diploid species.

Camelina (), an allohexaploid species, is an emerging aviation biofuel crop that has been the focus of resurgent interest in recent decades. To guide future breeding and crop improvement efforts, the community requires a deeper comprehension of subgenome dominance, often noted in allopolyploid species, "alongside an understanding of the genetic diversity" and population structure of material present within breeding programs. We conducted population genetic analyses of a diversity panel, leveraging a new genome, to estimate nucleotide diversity and population structure, and analyzed for patterns of subgenome expression dominance among different organs.

Background: Pneumothorax is a major complication after endoscopic lung volume reduction with valves, with a prevalence of up to 34%. Although some patients benefit from valve implantation despite pneumothorax, others are significantly impaired after lung collapse.

Research Question: What are the differences in the severity grades of pneumothorax and how do these affect clinical practice?

Study Design And Methods: This single-center retrospective study analyzed patients undergoing endoscopic valve implantation with and without pneumothorax after intervention.

Efforts to address poor-quality diets have stepped up considerably in recent years, but the problem of inadequate, unhealthy, unsustainable and unequal diets persists. Here we argue that to get policies and interventions working more effectively and equitably, a fresh approach is needed-one that considers the full picture of people's realities. People's realities interact to shape the way people respond to and engage with policies and interventions, thereby influencing their impact, particularly, albeit not only, on dietary inequalities.

The stability of wave conduction in the heart is strongly related to the proper interplay between the electrophysiological activation and mechanical contraction of myocytes and extracellular matrix (ECM) properties. In this study, we statistically compare bioengineered cardiac tissues cultured on soft hydrogels ( kPa) and rigid glass substrates by focusing on the critical threshold of alternans, network-physiological tissue properties, and the formation of stable spiral waves that manifest after wave breakups. For the classification of wave dynamics, we use an improved signal oversampling technique and introduce simple probability maps to identify and visualize spatially concordant and discordant alternans as V- and X-shaped probability distributions.

For patients with metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), treatment with pembrolizumab is dependent on the accurate determination of programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression using immunohistochemistry (IHC). This study evaluated the interobserver concordance in assessing PD-L1 expression on TNBC samples using the commercial 22C3 IHC assay and an in-house assay based on the E1L3N antibody. Concordance between the 22C3 and the E1L3N IHC assays was evaluated on TNBC samples read by a commercial laboratory and a Brigham and Women's Hospital breast pathologist (BWH reader).

Introduction: Currently, there is a lack of bronchoscopic lung volume reduction options that do not depend on fissure integrity. Endobronchial coils have been extensively studied to address this need but exhibited variable patient response and have been discontinued. Lung tension device (LTD) coils represent the next-generation coil treatment.

Drought stress substantially impacts crop physiology resulting in alteration of growth and productivity. Understanding the genetic and molecular crosstalk between stress responses and agronomically important traits such as fibre yield is particularly complicated in the allopolyploid species, upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum), due to reduced sequence variability between A and D subgenomes. To better understand how drought stress impacts yield, the transcriptomes of 22 genetically and phenotypically diverse upland cotton accessions grown under well-watered and water-limited conditions in the Arizona low desert were sequenced.
