Efforts to address poor-quality diets have stepped up considerably in recent years, but the problem of inadequate, unhealthy, unsustainable and unequal diets persists. Here we argue that to get policies and interventions working more effectively and equitably, a fresh approach is needed-one that considers the full picture of people's realities. People's realities interact to shape the way people respond to and engage with policies and interventions, thereby influencing their impact, particularly, albeit not only, on dietary inequalities.

Background And Objective: Hyperhidrosis (HH) is associated with impairments in quality of life (QOL) and elevated anxiety. Microwave thermolysis is a newer treatment that reduces sweating, yet effects on QOL and emotional symptoms have not been examined. Two treatment sessions are recommended to achieve 80% amelioration of clinical HH.

While recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEpo) has been widely used to treat anemia in cancer patients, concerns about its adverse effects on patient survival have emerged. A lack of correlation between expression of the canonical EpoR and rhEpo's effects on cancer cells prompted us to consider the existence of an alternative Epo receptor. Here, we identified EphB4 as an Epo receptor that triggers downstream signaling via STAT3 and promotes rhEpo-induced tumor growth and progression.

Unlabelled: Epigenetic alterations are strongly associated with the development of cancer. We conducted a phase I/II trial of combined epigenetic therapy with azacitidine and entinostat, inhibitors of DNA methylation and histone deacetylation, respectively, in extensively pretreated patients with recurrent metastatic non-small cell lung cancer. This therapy is well tolerated, and objective responses were observed, including a complete response and a partial response in a patient who remains alive and without disease progression approximately 2 years after completing protocol therapy.

Article Synopsis
  • The UK TACT study aimed to determine if adding docetaxel after anthracycline chemotherapy would improve disease-free survival in early breast cancer patients.
  • The trial involved 4,162 women who were randomly assigned to receive either a combination of FEC followed by docetaxel or a control regimen that varied among centers.
  • Results showed no significant difference in disease-free survival between the two groups, although the experimental group experienced more severe adverse events.

Fatal cases of acute shock complicating Clostridium sordellii endometritis following medical abortion with mifepristone (also known as RU-486) used with misoprostol were reported. The pathogenesis of this unexpected complication remains enigmatic. Misoprostol is a pharmacomimetic of PGE(2), an endogenous suppressor of innate immunity.

Oxygen fluctuation patterns in preterm infants who develop retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) are varied and poorly represented in animal models. We examined the hypothesis that clustered (CL) episodes of hypoxia during hyperoxia results in a more severe form of oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) than dispersed episodes. Rat pups were exposed to alternating cycles of 1) 50% O2 with three CL episodes of 12% O2 every 6 h; or 2) 50% O2 with one episode of 12% O2 every 2 h, for 7 (P7) or 14 (P14) days postnatal age.

A technique for the experimental creation of a venous thrombus in the rat is described. This technique involves a circumferential stretching of the intima, which maximizes intraluminal collagen exposure without complete separation of the vessel wall. This thrombotic method was 94.

A free epigastric fat flap, a modification of the well-known cutaneous groin flap, is described in the rat. Vascular perfusion was successfully restored when transferred to the neck of the rat in 75% of the rats that underwent surgery, as assessed by multiple postoperative stripping tests and select microangiography. This flap offers the advantages of familiar anatomy, ease of postoperative care without risk of flap trauma, and a challenge to microsurgical technique development for successful flap transfer execution.
