Background: Calcineurin inhibitors (CNIs) are associated with long-term complications after heart transplantation (HTx). Everolimus (EVR)-based immunosuppression allows for CNI withdrawal. We used data from The Scandinavian heart transplant everolimus de novo study with early CNI avoidance (SCHEDULE) trial to assess whether health-related quality of life (HRQoL) differed between patients on long-term treatment with EVR versus a CNI-based regimen.

Leakage of microbes and their metabolites into the bloodstream may activate neutrophils. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) consist of chromatin and proteases, and may contribute to HF pathogenesis.

Whether continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) can reverse LA and LV remodelling in patients with OSA and paroxysmal AF (PAF) has yet to be studied. We assessed the impact of CPAP treatment on LA and LV size and function in patients with OSA and PAF before and after catheter ablation.

We aimed to compare right ventricular (RV) remodelling and late survival after PEA and BPA.
Methods: In this prospective observational cohort study, we performed echocardiography at baseline and follow-up in patients with CTEPH treated with PEA (n=54) or BPA (n=44) between 2011 and 2022.
Background: Interleukin-6-receptor inhibition with tocilizumab improves myocardial salvage in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Reduced levels of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), which consist of nuclear material studded with proteins released upon neutrophil activation, might contribute to this effect.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of tocilizumab on NETs and investigate the association between NETs and myocardial injury in patients with STEMI.
Circular (circ) RNAs are non-coding RNAs with important functions in the nervous system, cardiovascular system, and cancer. Their role in atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction (MI) remains poorly described. We aim to investigate the potential circRNAs in immune cells during atherogenesis and examine the most regulated during MI and the modulation by interleukin (IL)-6 receptor inhibition by tocilizumab.

We aimed to assess the association between overweight or obesity, exercise capacity, and health-related quality of life in heart transplant recipients.
Methods: This study is based on baseline data from the IronIC trial, in which we randomized 102 heart transplant recipients with iron deficiency to ferric derisomaltose or placebo.
Background: Echocardiography is widely used to evaluate left ventricular (LV) diastolic function in patients suspected of heart failure. For patients in sinus rhythm, a combination of several echocardiographic parameters can differentiate between normal and elevated LV filling pressure with good accuracy. However, there is no established echocardiographic approach for the evaluation of LV filling pressure in patients with atrial fibrillation.

Data on exercise exposure and diffuse myocardial fibrosis in endurance athletes are scarce and conflicting. We aimed to investigate the association between exercise exposure and markers of diffuse myocardial fibrosis by cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) in endurance athletes.

Methods: We performed shot-gun sequencing on 235 samples from 166 HF patients and 69 healthy control samples. Separate plasma samples from healthy controls (n = 53) were used for the comparison of imidazole propionate (ImP) levels.
Understanding the dynamics of excited states after optical excitation at donor-acceptor (D/A) interfaces is of paramount importance for improving the efficiency and performance of optoelectronic devices. Here, we studied the ultrafast excited state dynamics after optical excitation at interfaces between the electron donor (D) pentacene (PEN) and the electron acceptor (A) perfuoropentacene (PFP) as well as within the single compounds (PEN and PFP) using femtosecond (fs) time-resolved second harmonic generation (SHG). In the single compounds singlet fission is observed on a time scale of around 200 fs.

Objective: To analyze the clinical presentation, diagnostics, treatment, monitoring and clinical outcomes in a Norwegian cohort.
Methods: Using discharge diagnoses between 2017 through 2020 from a large tertiary center, we identified 52 patients with CS.
Modifying the optical and electronic properties of crystalline organic thin films is of great interest for improving the performance of modern organic semiconductor devices. Therein, the statistical mixing of molecules to form a solid solution provides an opportunity to fine-tune optical and electronic properties. Unfortunately, the diversity of intermolecular interactions renders mixed organic crystals highly complex, and a holistic picture is still lacking.

The extracellular matrix proteoglycan versican is elevated in heart failure and suggested to be a target for treatment. However, the temporal expression and spatial distribution of versican and the versican cleavage fragment containing the neoepitope DPEAAE in cardiac fibrosis remains to be elucidated.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe photophysics of organic semiconductor (OSC) thin films or crystals has garnered significant attention in recent years since a comprehensive theoretical understanding of the various processes occurring upon photoexcitation is crucial for assessing the efficiency of OSC materials. To date, research in this area has relied on methods using Frenkel-Holstein Hamiltonians, calculations of the GW-Bethe-Salpeter equation with periodic boundaries, or cluster-based approaches using quantum chemical methods, with each of the three approaches having distinct advantages and disadvantages. In this work, we introduce an optimally tuned, range-separated time-dependent density functional theory approach to accurately reproduce the total and polarization-resolved absorption spectra of pentacene, tetracene, and perylene thin films, all representative OSC materials.

Nevertheless, some organic semiconductors feature reduced mobility at increasing temperature, a hallmark for delocalized band transport. Here we present the temperature-dependent mobility in two record-mobility organic semiconductors: dinaphtho[2,3-b:2',3'-f]thieno[3,2-b]-thiophene (DNTT) and its alkylated derivative, C8-DNTT-C8.

Aims: The non-invasive myocardial work index (MWI) has been validated in patients without aortic stenosis (AS). A thorough assessment of methodological limitations is warranted before this index can be applied to patients with AS.
Methods And Results: We simultaneously measured left ventricular pressure (LVP) by using a micromanometer-tipped catheter and obtained echocardiograms in 20 patients with severe AS.
Background: The optimal antithrombotic therapy after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is unknown. Bioprosthetic valve dysfunction (BVD) is associated with adverse outcomes and may be prevented by anticoagulation therapy. A dedicated randomized trial comparing monotherapy NOAC to single antiplatelet therapy has not been performed previously.

Here, we explored how cytokines were affected by tocilizumab and their correlations with neutrophils, C-reactive protein (CRP), troponin T, MSI and infarct size.
Methods: STEMI patients were randomised to receive a single dose of 280 mg tocilizumab (n=101) or placebo (n=98) before percutaneous coronary intervention.
Perylene-based organic semiconductors are widely used in organic electronic devices. Here, we studied the ultrafast excited state dynamics after optical excitation at interfaces between the electron donor (D) diindenoperylene (DIP) and the electron acceptor (A) dicyano-perylene-bis(dicarboximide) (PDIR-CN ) using femtosecond time-resolved second harmonic generation (SHG) in combination with large scale quantum chemical calculations. Thereby, we varied in bilayer structures of DIP and PDIR-CN the interfacial molecular geometry.

Consequently, the chemical and photophysical properties of these organic semiconductors can be influenced without the need of chemical modification but simply by implementing them in optical microcavities. This has so far mostly been shown in Fabry-Pérot cavities and with organic single crystals or diluted molecules in a host matrix.
